The event is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees over the weekend. Adult admission is $15, Kids 4-11 are $6, and those three years old and under are always free. The Long Island Pet Expo returns on March 2-3, 2024, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets.

“The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs several similar events in the northeast.

The 100+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Pets on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Gail Mirabella and the Dynamo Dogs, Diana Frohman and her Beautiful Dancing Dogs, Schutzhund Demonstration

Hands-On Lesson In Natural Disasters

Prior to the winter break, the students in Ms. Filiberto’s third grade class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned about natural disasters. To close out their science unit, the students participated in handson models that relate to hurricanes and tornadoes.

Students created a

hurricane in a bowl, using water and food dye.

They observed the characteristics of a hurricane through the mini model in a clear bowl.

They stirred the water to create a rotation motion and while the water was still rotating, they added drops of food coloring in the center. Students observed what happened

to the food coloring and described the ways in which the model relates to a hurricane.

Next, the they created their own “tornado in a bottle.” Students explored and investigated centripetal force as they observed a vortex form when a jar of glitter and water was shaken in a circular motion.

First Graders Complete Unit On Animals On Jan. 26, first graders at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville worked in teams to research different animals on the app, PebbleGo. Students also watched National Geographic

videos as part of this unit, and they wrote letters to a zookeeper asking why they think certain animals should be at the zoo. First graders used the app, ChatterPix, to present their letters, and QR codes

were made for their videos.

Ms. Cohen’s class partnered with Mrs. Hammerschmitts class, and they viewed each other’s classwork by using the iPads to teach students how to scan a QR code.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people

per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need.

Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a post-Covid reopening – a

reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for

on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/ donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need.
