During this year’s Annual December Dinner, renowned preservationist and Old Westbury Gardens Board Trustee Dick Gachot was honored for his long-term support for Old Westbury Gardens. Throughout his 40 year relationship with Old Westbury Gardens, Gachot has been involved in countless preservation projects. The dinner also featured a presentation by guest speaker Michael Devonshire, a renowned architectural conservator

with more than 25 years of experience in the field of historic preservation.

“The holiday season is a magical time at the Old Westbury Gardens, and we were proud to host such an illustrious group this year for our Annual December Dinner,” said Nancy Costopulos, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens.

“This year’s event was incredibly successful, as we were able to raise enough funds to help support several exciting preservation initiatives for 2017. We were thrilled to see so many familiar faces and some new ones at our premier fundraising event.”

Through the incredible generosity of distinguished guests, Old Westbury Gardens was successfully able to raise enough funds to support significant renovation projects to preserve the Westbury House’s unique aesthetic and create new programs for guests to enjoy for generations to come. Projects set for 2017 include the conservation of the archives collection and repairs to the roof of the 100-year old Thatched Cottage.

It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really.

I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has.

Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for.

As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved.

Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo.

I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point.

First place was awarded to Olivia Healy for her project “Insulating Materials.” In second place, Elizabeth Garrovillas won for “Dogs’ Nose Knows” and Johnell Hankerson won for “Green Tea.” Third place honors went to four different projects: Sophia Gonzalez for “What are we really eating?;” Dylan Bedell and Aidan Murphy for “Smart Home;” Aniyah Woods and DaVeyah Williams for “Late Alarms Cause Harm;” and Sophia Bright for “The effects of pesticides on a honeybee’s lifespan.” Four additional projects took home honorable mention awards.

For every letter written to Santa, Macy’s donates $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

By writing their own letters and reaching out

to the community to pen letters, the student council collected 3,309 letters, raising more than $3,000 for the Make-A-Wish organization. “All of our students strived to make a difference and wanted to donate more than the 500 letters created last

year,” said Stephanie Colagiacomo, Copiague Middle School student council adviser. “Our students truly captured the spirit of the season and symbolize the power of simple acts of kindness.”

The LIU Post Art Department will honor three students from local high schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the awards ceremony for “Advanced Visions 13: High School Artists of Excellence,” to be held at the University’s Hutchins Gallery on January 25th, 2017. All of the participating students were selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition.

The exhibition recognizes the superior work being done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island and is on view through January 25th, 2017.

Three students are recognized with Juror’s Awards. Maria Mancz, a student from Division Avenue High School earned an award for her mixed media piece, “Old Man and The Sea”. Ms. Mancz’s art teacher is Timothy Ryan.

Maria Anania from Farmingdale High School earned an award for her pen and ink piece, “Withering Youth.”

Ms. Anania’s art teacher is Regina Nicholas. Ricky Vargas from Valley Stream South High School earned an award for his graphite piece, “Restraining Hatred.” Mr. Vargas’s art teacher is Ed Lee. “This year’s work is an excellent example of a wide selection of media,” said the coordinator of the exhibition, LIU Post adjunct professor of art Cristina Lomangino, “yet there is a coincidental and beautiful content theme in many pieces. It is evident that each piece is personal to the artist and conveys real talent in form at such an early age.”

Ninth-graders at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District learned about other cultures as three foreign exchange students visited on December 21st.

The students, freshman Anh, from Vietnam, sophomore Li, from Germany and sophomore Tom, from China, are all attending St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip. They were joined by Eastin Deverna, St. John’s manager of international

programs, and spoke with students in Jack Zider’s Advanced Placement human geography course at Edmund W. Miles.

The international students talked about what education is like in their native countries and how they adjusted to their new school in the United States.

They answered questions from the Amityville students about the music and food they like, activities they are involved with, career aspirations and why they wanted to

The visit was a culminating activity for the students in Mr. Zider’s class, who recently finished up a unit of study on culture in which they discussed the differences between pop and folk culture in different nations across the world.

The Amityville Union Free School District has named Kathleen Hyland as the new principal of Northwest Elementary School, which serves the district’s first-, secondand third-grade students.

She has been the assistant principal since August.

Ms. Hyland, of Bay Shore, has been with the district

since 2004, serving as a math and science teacher at Edmund W. Miles Middle School and Park Avenue Elementary School. She has held several leadership positions including a site coordinator for the 21st Century BEST Program at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School and a site coordinator for the

Summer Enrichment Academy at Northwest. She has also served as a gradelevel subject leader and mentor for other teachers.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hofstra University, and a master’s degree and advanced certificate in school and building leadership from Dowling College.

“Ms. Hyland has been a dedicated, child-centered educator in Amityville for the past 13 years, and she has quickly proven herself to be a capable school leader,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly. “I am confident that Ms. Hyland will be successful in her new role as principal of the Northwest Elementary School.”

Miss New York Teen USA 2017 Kayleigh Balcarcel was selected out of over 200 candidates as a State Finalist to compete for the Title of Miss NY Teen USA pageant being held on January 14th, 15th and 16th at the Performing Arts Center of Purchase College in Harrison NY. Kayleigh, age 17, a Brookhaven resident for all of her life, is currently a senior at Bellport High School whose name she will represent in the pageant. She hopes to attend either Penn State or The Fashion Institute

of Technology next year.

She is very involved in the plight of the less fortunate and volunteers her time in helping the Lighthouse Mission of Long Island, in their many outreaches.

She helps to hand out food, collect clothing for the less fortunate and volunteers in the Christmas toy drive.

She hopes to win the Title of Miss Teen USA to bring forth more exposure to the needs of the less fortunate when it comes to the scarcity of food and clothing resources on Long Island.

Kayleigh is the daughter of her very proud parents, Carlos and Brenda Balcarcel of Brookhaven.

Kayleigh raised the necessary funds to manage the expenses to compete by starting a go-fund me page where her family and friends donated as well as getting sponsorships from local businesses and money she raised in her part time job.
