And so, we begin again. The slate has been wiped clean, for now. There is always carryover, damage to be repaired and turmoil to be calmed. Life is like that, for better or worse. As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us. May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward. That, in itself, is a resolution everyone can get behind.

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children.
The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food. This Boutique is much more than a distribution
LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children. During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless.

This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more.

After School Enrichment When the day ends at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, many students decide to stick around for an extra hour or two. A new after-school program, which began in November, is full of exciting courses that allow students in grades 4-6 to enrich their minds. Classes are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and Principal Robyn Santiago estimates that at least half of Park Avenue students are taking part in at least one course. The program includes robotics, French, martial
arts, dance, art club and character education. There is also a math enrichment program. In the robotics class with fifth-grade teachers Paul Grasso and James Replak, students can use Lego robotics kits to build their own creations or explore computer programming by making simple video games using the Scratch coding language. The district’s French teacher, Brooke Prestano, is giving students an introduction to another spoken language, teaching them greetings, numbers, colors, animals and basic conversational phrases.
Park Avenue has partnered with the United North Amityville Youth Organization to offer taekwondo, as well as character education and anti-bullying classes. The after-school program will continue until the end of the school year. “We are pleased at how popular our new after-school program has quickly become,” Ms. Santiago said. “The courses were created with student interests in mind and both the children and instructors have shown great enthusiasm. We hope this is only the beginning.”

Polar Express All comfy and cozy in their pajamas, kindergartners gathered around the big screen for one of their favorite Christmas tales, the “Polar Express,” which played in the gymnasium at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville

The pride and wonder they felt upon having a tangible class lesson come to life in their hands was palpable. “I think it’s very cool to see pieces that we’ve seen in class come alive, and actually be able to hold them and dress the mannequins,” said Samantha Perez, a student in the Fashion Merchandising program. “Especially the fact that they are such important pieces from designers that we’ve already learned about.” The pieces ranged from formal gowns from Yves Saint Laurent to cutting edge pieces from the father of haute couture Jacques Fath to iconic pieces, like a Burberry trench coat. “It’s also revolutionary the ways everything changes from one era to the next,” said Fashion Merchandising student Judith Solorzano. “For example, the Burberry jacket. I could wear that right now on an everyday basis. I can see how it could sell just the same today. Just because of the
brand Burberry.” Solorzano considered a sequined dress. “What’s coming back are the puff shoulders in certain styles– not evening gowns, but on certain things like blazers.” Students agreed that no other fashion programs that they could have applied to would have given them the same kind of experience. “I could have had the option to travel to the city to go to FIT, but I chose to stay home and go to LIU,” Solorzano said. “And I say to my parents on almost an everyday basis that little did I know how awesome a program Professor Serota has for us. It’s not just for learning in the classroom but for outside experiences. And her experience in the business makes her so hands-on. You couldn’t get that from anybody else. She doesn’t teach you from books. She teaches you from experience.” Being in close proximity to and having business relationships with Herschliefer’s and the Americana Manhasset
mall has offered them opportunities to experience hands-on experiential learning. During the semester, they have gone into showrooms, into a trend forecaster, Mood fabrics, and more. “We went to see Philip Lim,” said Perez. “We got to see his showroom. They us his past runway season and how he’s trying to be environmentally conscience about what he does. It was very cool, the entire atmosphere.” “The whole experience – I would say was like a stepby-step for how production takes place for creating a design,” said Solorzano. “It’s like learning a chapter through an experience and talking to people in the industry. We met girls who are probably not so far from our age who have these jobs, who are working for Philip Lim and other brands and getting higher promotions. It’s inspiring to see girls just like us, getting out of college and getting jobs like that. It makes it feel achievable.”

fashion merchandising program is unique to the region, with a focus on the business end of the fashion industry. The mannequins and dresses will be part of a Capstone project this spring where the students will catalog and display the items, creating a full fashion exhibition with detailed signage as their culminating project. Cherie Serota, Director of Fashion Merchandising at LIU Post, was thrilled with the significant gifts for the program. As part of the Intro to Fashion Merchandising coursework, students studied fashion by the decade from the Victorian era to the present. The couture gowns all come from the 1980s era. “We have Halston, Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and all these different designers that we talk about,” Serota said. “We discuss the decade they’re from and what the lasting influences are and now we have this collection here.” Students were on hand to help dress the mannequin.

Memorial Garden
The Kiwanis Club of Amityville was chartered in June 1949. Pete Pappas, the last surviving Charter Member died in March 2014. He faithfully attended weekly club meetings until late 2013. Perfect attendance doesn’t begin to describe Pete. This year, the club finally completed a longoverdue project honoring Pete’s memory, and his dedication to the club and
the community. A bare patch at the entrance of the Village Beach is now enhanced by 3 Eastern Red Cedars, a lavender flowering Crape Myrtle, annuals and perennials filling in. Snowy, wintery weather did not deter family and friends who gathered on December 16th, 2017 at the Amityville Beach. A stone marker, engraved by the family of deceased club
member Joe Caridi, was installed, Past President Hal Schad told a few “Pete” stories to family and the garden was officially dedicated. To this day, Pete is sorely missed by all who knew him. The Pete Pappas’ Memorial Garden will be a permanent reminder of his presence in our lives and our community.
