he holiday season is being made a little brighter for a few lucky children in Copiague this year thanks to the students in Natalia Brite’s, Philomena Russo’s and Caren Steiger’s classes at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column…

As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s.

Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today.

By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

At the December 10th meeting of the Amityville School District Board of Education, Amityville Memorial High School Principal Dr. Mary DeRose recognized 61 students in grades 10-12 that earned the top 10 spots on the school’s first quarter Honor Roll and High Honor Roll.

DeRose highlighted the many ways in which the students involve themselves academically and with extracurricular activities as she read the name of each top 10 student. She presented certificates to those students in attendance.

To achieve a spot on the Honor Roll, students must maintain a gradepoint-average between 85 and 92.9 and must not have a below 75 average in any subject. Students with a 93 average or higher were designated to High Honor Roll.

Family Fun It was a family affair at Northeast School in the Amityville School District on December 11th when children and their guardians gathered for “Family Learning Night.”

Beginning in the school’s cafeteria, families participated in an arts and crafts assignment, making cards and frames with construction paper, glue and decorations. Afterward they headed over to the gymnasium where they sat

King read There Was A Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow, by Lucille Colandro, while Corbett read The First Day of Winter, by Denise Fleming.

After story time, the children were given the choice of a number of activities. They could help draw a large snowman mural with chalk or build a

snowman in a bottle. Two stations were also set up for students and their families to either make decorative cards for soldiers in the Armed Forces or wrap donated toys in time for the holidays.

Northeast School staff and members of the National Junior Honor Society at Edmund W. Miles Middle School volunteered their time to help run the event.

Students in Christine Barteldt’s family and consumer sciences class at Copiague Middle School were treated to a visit from an assistant manager and a teller from the local TFCU Bank to discuss the importance of finances.

During the visit, students were able to ask questions to professionals in the field and were given pens and backpacks during

the visit. The visit provided a first-hand community connection to the students and provided an excellent source of information about real world finances.

During the informal gathering, the Board welcomed district residents who may be interested in running for the volunteer position and discussed the

various responsibilities and time commitments undertaken once elected.

Other areas addressed included how the Board functions together as a unit, as well as with the superintendent of schools and district clerk; mandatory training for school board members as required by New York State law; and the importance

She will accept payment for taxes at her office in the Town Hall, 200 East Sunrise Highway, N. Lindenhurst, N.Y. 11757 or by mail, beginning December 2014 daily between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Tax Office will be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. The evening kicked off with a special musical performance from the high school’s Madrigal Choir, singing classic holiday tunes and Christmas carols.

Following the melodious singing, students served seniors a variety of different catered food and refreshments in a buffet style. For senior citizens who had difficulty standing, students handdelivered a plate of food to their table. After dinner, the high school seniors took to the dance floor with their senior guests, showing off their best dance moves for the remainder of the evening.

Assisted by senior class advisors Deb Delany and Colleen Gurtner, high AA Realty school seniors fundraise for the event each year and it continues to be a highlight of the school’s community service program.
