Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? Spelling Bee Champions
Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville hosted its annual spelling bee on Nov. 17.
Fourth grader Lamell Ellis emerged as Park Avenue’s top speller for the second time as he also won last year’s spelling bee. Additionally, fourth grader Allison Yanes Bonilla was
victorious as the Spanish spelling bee champion.
More than 80 students participated in the preliminary round of the spelling bee, which was narrowed down to 20 finalists who took the stage for the evening competition. After it was down to the top three, those students continued to spell
their words correctly for multiple rounds before a winner emerged. Both winners received medals, certificates and trophies.
The Amityville School District congratulates all of the participants who competed in this year’s spelling bee at Park Avenue.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

How To Protect Yourself From Holiday Shopping Scams
Online scams cost Americans nearly $7 billion throughout 2021, according to the FBI, and with the holiday shopping season ramping up, it’s vital that people understand how to avoid falling victim to scams.
“Scams often increase with consumer spending, making the holidays ripe for scammers trying to take advantage of the season’s sense of urgency and scarcity,” said Amy Maliga, a financial educator with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “It’s not enough to be aware of scams, though. You have to learn how to watch for and avoid them so your happy holidays don’t turn into a nightmare.”
Maliga shares several things to do and watch out for to avoid falling prey to holiday shopping scams:
Use secure payment methods: Be wary of websites or sellers that request unusual payment methods like wire transfers, cashier’s checks or apps. Stick to secure payment options such as major credit cards or
PayPal.
Check for site security: Look for ‘https’ at the front of the site’s URL and the small lock icon in the browser window. These indicate that the website is secure, ensuring any data you share (such as credit card numbers or shipping details) will be encrypted when you submit it.
Watch for spelling and grammatical errors: If you notice a plethora of spelling and grammar mistakes on a website, social media posts or other promotional materials, you likely want to shop elsewhere.
Pay attention to reviews: Reviews can reveal much about online retailers and sellers. Are there lots of poor reviews from buyers who didn’t receive what they purchased? Or are there numerous glowing reviews that all read alike? Either may indicate the site isn’t what it claims to be.
Watch for ‘phishy’ confirmation emails: If you receive a confirmation email for an order you didn’t place, ignore and delete it. Knowing people are likely making several orders, scammers will send
a phishing email disguised to resemble a confirmation notice from legitimate retailers. If it appears legit, try manually searching the order number on the retailer’s website instead of clicking on any included links.
Don’t let scammers steal your money or your holiday cheer. If a deal or website appears too good to be true, it likely is.

High School Students Bring ‘Christmas Magic’ To Kids In Need
In the spirit of the holidays and giving back, Amityville Memorial High School’s Warrior Awareness Club student members once again participated in the Christmas Magic program.
The nonprofit program was formed in 1990 through the efforts of
a single father, Charlie Russo, a Hauppauge attorney. He wanted to teach his children the true meaning of Christmas. More than the 30 years, the organization has grown into hundreds of Long Island families giving back to their communities. Christmas
Magic has touched the lives of over 11,000 Long Island children in more than 55 shelters, agencies, programs, churches and schools.
The Warrior Awareness Club took three trips to Target in Copiague during the first week of December to shop for children who
are struggling during the holidays. To ensure gifts met the specific needs of the children the Amityville students were buying gifts for, they were given an information sheet that included each child’s age, gender, clothing size and interest.

The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network
EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. This organization has five service areas: Children & Youth, Family & Community, Senior & Nutrition Services, Vocational Services & Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Services. Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they assist over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County.
EAC Network runs the New Path Treatment Center, which is an outpatient clinic located in Hempstead. The center offers a recovery process in a safe and full-service treatment program for individuals with substance abuse disorders.
Approximately 22.7 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol-related problems, and many will not seek treatment due to the stigma and shame associated with substance use disorders. The New Path Treatment Center is a place where trained and compassionate counselors work tirelessly to assist people in need. They address not only substance use itself, but all of its contributing factors, including mental health, physical health, family systems, socialization, smoking cessation, legal issues and employment. A personal treatment plan is developed for each individual to address their specific needs.

“We started this event knowing that all parents feel the pressure to make the season magical for their children, but when families are stressed with medical visits, painful treatments, and financial burdens, taking part in holiday festivities can be overwhelming, notes Melissa Firmes, President, KiDS NEED MoRE. “We wanted to make the experience not only wonderful for the children, but also as a gift to the entire family, and a way for everyone to enjoy the holiday together.”
KiDS NEED MoRE will have a fleet of over 40 buses with over 20 volunteer elves on each vehicle delivering holiday
wishes for kids coping with life-threatening illnesses and their siblings this year, in the hopes that parents and caregivers do not have to pay anything for the holidays. Many of the volunteers are survivors or bereaved family members themselves. One bus will also be delivering to New Jersey families on Saturday, December 10th, 2022.
The rest of the fleet will be delivering all across Long Island, NYC, and one bus in CT Sunday, 12/18 beginning at 9:30 AM and going into the evening until all the gifts have been delivered. The Holiday Cheer Bus Elf Ride always takes place the Sunday before Christmas each year.

American Legion Post 1120 in Lindenhurst, NY all families and volunteers who would like to join in the celebration.
