When hosting friends and family at home, it’s understandable that hosts direct so much of their focus to the foods they plan to serve. The main course is often the focal point and most memorable aspect of a dinner party, and that’s true whether the get-together is a backyard barbecue, a holiday meal with the family or a formal affair with colleagues.

Food might be a focal point, but guests also will need something to drink.

Traditional spirits like wine and cocktails are the standard, but hosts who want to get a little creative should not hesitate to do so. When choosing a special beverage, timing is everything. Guests wil want to cool down on warm summer evenings, so something cold and

refreshing can make for the perfect signature cocktail. When hosting on nights when the mercury has dropped, a warm beverage can heat up guests in a matter of minutes. On such nights, hosts can serve this version of “Hot Mulled (Sherried) Apple Cider” courtesy of Laurey Masterton’s “The Fresh Honey Cookbook” (Storey). One added benefit to Masterton’s recipe is it can produce a welcoming winter aroma, helping hosts establish a warm ambiance for the festivities.

Hot Mulled (Sherried) Apple Cider

4 sticks cinnamon 1/4 cup honey, preferably cranberry honey 1 cup sherry (optional) 1. Combine the cider, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, and honey in a large pot over medium heat. If you are picky about things floating in your cider, make a little bundle out of cheesecloth and place the cinnamon and cloves inside before adding to the cider. I like to chew on cloves, so I just toss everything in. Bring to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer over low heat for an hour or so to spread these lovely winter aromas around your home.

Autism FYI www.autismfyi.org Autism FYI (AFYI) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a safe environment, employment opportunities and independence for those on the Autism Spectrum.

They recently opened their first office in the New York area in Wantagh. They are honored and delighted to have this new office and team to serve the New York Autism community for years to come!

The ability of e m e r g e n c y responders to recognize the need for special approaches and considerations is hampered by the lack of physical indicators of Autism. This non-profit has created the first membership safety program, IRIS (Immediate Recognition Increases Safety) that is designed to help emergency responders recognize and react appropriately to those with Autism. It also allows the emergency responders to be provided with information immediately through picture ID cards with pertinent information about a person, as well as USB bracelets, clothing and patches with an alert logo. Additionally, a 24 hour hot-line is available to help provide that emergency information as well as contact member’s emergency contacts. Two senior students High School, from Amityville Memorial Hernendez and

Kenia Rodriquez, were recently Junior Achievement Randy nominated to serve as Student Ambassadors for the 2021-2022 school year. Kenia and Randy were selected to represent Junior Achievement from over 100 applicants from schools across the metropolitan region.

Kenia and Randy have worked extensively with Junior Achievement’s High School Heroes program, teaching lessons about careers, community, family, and finance to students in Amityville’s elementary schools. They also took part in the Career Day Program and the Finance Park Program which included a financial literacy simulation with students from other Long Island high schools.

Amityville Union Free School District’s October Teacher of The Month Nominee has garnered a lot of attention due to her unique and innovative teaching method. Ms. Schgweigert’s Modern Classroom gives students a more individualized approach to learning.

Ms. Schweigert faced the inevitable challenge of her students learning at different paces throughout each lesson. As every teacher experiences, she found herself having to repeat key components of the lesson to cater to those who needed extra instruction, while those who had already grasped it were ready to move on.

To differentiate instruction within the classroom and better maximize both her and her students’ time, Ms. Schweigert took the liberty of filming herself teaching each lesson over

the summer. This way, after her initial introduction of each lesson, the students are free to watch the remainder of the instruction on their own.

They are able to pause, rewind, and replay as much as they individually need so that they can get the personalized instruction they need. It also permits Ms. Schweigert to give individualized attention to students throughout each class session.

“I think this is a great contemporary method of teaching,” said Mr. Edward Plaia, Principal of Amityville Memorial High School. “We are aware that our students have their own way of learning and absorbing information. It is our job as educators to be able to recognize each of our student’s needs.

Everyone learns differently and at a different pace!”

In addition to asynchronous video

learning, students gain encouragement from each other through a system of magnets on the classroom whiteboard. Each student has their own magnet that is placed in a particular section of the whiteboard to signify their progress throughout a given lesson.

For every lesson, there is a Must Do section, a Should Do section and an Aspire section. Students earn their grades as they complete each section.

On Tuesday, October 26, National Junior Honor Society students at Edmund W. Miles Middle school met with Diane Urso, Long Island and Queens Regional Director for the New York State Mentoring Program to be trained as mentors for 6th-grade students.

“I am so glad I was able to sit in and listen to Diane Urso during her presentation,” said Ms. Rose Hutcherson, Principal of Edmund W. Miles School.

“It was eye-opening to hear Ms. Urso speak about the positive outcomes that mentors can have on the students they work with. It is indicative of the character and spirit our students have that our Junior Honor Society students are taking

on this challenge to make a difference with students who may need this type of extra help in our District.”

The New York State Mentoring Program is a program that allows older students to become mentors to children who might have a difficult time inside and outside of the classroom. By having positive relationships, mentoring leads to increased participation in school, attendance, and better performance. The training consists of talking about healthy boundaries, how to actively listen, the importance of modeling appropriate behavior, the promotion of integrity, and how to spot red flags in the mentees if they are being

hurt, hurting anyone else, or being neglected.

“It was a productive day for our National Junior Honor Society students,” said Carlee Brunson, Edmund W Miles. Middle School’s National Honor Society Advisor. “I have full faith in our students that they will be great mentors to the students that they will be working with. I know with their guidance, support and encouragement, we will be able to see positive changes in the mentees.”

Currently, there are 17 8th-grade members of the National Junior Honor Society being trained. The 6th-grade students to be mentored will be chosen at the end of the first quarter.

A gathering of Village residents, current and retired Amityville police officers and firefighters, and elected officials gathered to enjoy a brisk autumn day on Nov. 6th at the dedication of Jerry Graziano Police and Firefighter Memorial Park. Located across from the main firehouse at 111 Oak Street in the Village of Amityville, the park honors the late Police Officer and AFD volunteer firefighter Jerry Graziano who served in the APD in the 1950s to 1970s. He passed away in July 1999.

A US Navy veteran who served in WWII, Graziano was widely known for his quick wit, community service, and ability to relate to everyone whom he encountered. Prior to joining the Amityville Police Department he worked as s a letter carrier in Lindenhurst.

Highlighting the dedication was a blessing from Rev. Randolph Jon Geminder, the AFD and APD Chaplain, and rector of St. Mary’s Church.

After a moving blessing, members of the Graziano family shared loving memories of their father, grandfather and uncle known as “Graz” who was a

POLICE OFFICER JERRY GRAZIANO larger-than-life presence in their lives. Retired officers also reflected on their time in service with their friend and fellow officer.

In the months leading up to the park dedication, Deputy Mayor Kevin Smith worked with volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Amityville and the Village Parks Commission -headed by Corinne Budde -- and with the Department of Public Works -- led by Bruce Hopper. The team planted trees and shrubs, installed a bench and refurbished the existing park. Police and fire flags were added to accent the American flag, and bronze tablets display the police and fire prayers.

Mayor Siry welcomed guests, including Suffolk County Legislator Jason

Richberg, Town of Babylon Councilman DuWayne Gregory and Brendan Cunningham representing Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre.

“This Park is a fitting tribute to Officer Graziano and all of our brave first responders who put their lives on the line every day,” said Mayor Siry.

The park was established under Mayor Peter Imbert’s administration, with assistance from other elected officials from the Town and County.

Family member Joe Fuller recalled how the support of Legislators Dave Bishop and Elie Mystal helped make the purchase of the land possible.

At the close of the remarks, Chiefs Bryan O. Burton, Jr. and Rob Waegerle officially unveiled the sign to celebrate the park’s revitalization.

Deputy Mayor Smith expressed his thanks to the many individuals and local businesses who contributed to the park, including local landscapers Batz Brothers and Gosline as well as Nicolock Paving Stones and Bedrock Building Supply, as well as the late Peter Keller, architect, and others in the community.

Christmas Masses and Ornament Blessings Returning to Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island has announced the return of its annual in-person Christmas Ornament Masses at – Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram and Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip. Masses will be held simultaneously at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 4.

Christmas Ornament Masses are a tradition that Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island has offered families for decades.

These Masses were cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, hundreds are expected to take part in Masses or at special, smaller Ornament Blessing Prayer Services offered conveniently during the week.

Blessing services will take place at the following dates: Holy Rood: Wednesday through Friday, December 1st – 3rd, and Monday and Tuesday, December 6th – 7th; Holy Sepulchure:

Wednesday through Friday, December 1st – 3rd; and Queen of All Saints: Monday and Tuesday, December 6th – 7th.

All blessings begin at 9:30 a.m. A full schedule of Masses and blessing ceremonies can be found on the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island website at Christmas Ornament Masses & Tree Blessings.

“Last year due to restrictions relating to the pandemic, we held a series of smaller ornament blessings that were very well received.

They were so popular that we are continuing them as well moving forward.

It is very important to us at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island to offer families the opportunities to honor and remember their lost loved ones.

Our in-person Christmas Masses and now Ornament Blessing Prayer Services are back for 2021 and we expect large numbers of families to attend,” said Richard Bie, President/CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of

Families will attend services and bring their favorite or special Christmas ornaments that they will hang on chapel Christmas Trees as tributes to family members who have passed on. Many ornaments are handmade and others include photos of loved ones.

Following the blessings of the Christmas Trees, families are invited to place these mementos in remembrance on the trees.

“Families across Long Island have been eager to know about the scheduling of our Christmas celebrations; these are among our most well attended each year.

Christmas Trees in our chapels are decorated with these special family ornaments, they serve as a beautiful and a fitting remembrance of those loved ones who have passed,” added Ann Andersen, Associate Director of Administration and Customer Sales. “And families are welcome to return, after Christmas,

to take back the ornament and save it for an annual tradition in the future.”

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and operates four cemeteries across Long Island including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip and Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury. Queen of Peace is the first new Catholic cemetery to open on Long Island in decades and its chapel is expect to completed by the summer of 2022.
