More than 100 secondgraders from Copiague School District visited Woodbury Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics on October 14th as part of the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile initiative. In conjunction with the Henry Schein Company, which provided the funding for the visit, and Dr. Doug Schildhaus, the students traveled by bus to Woodbury to get a dental education, checkup and cleaning free of charge.

Each student met with the dentist and hygienist during the visit. Students rotated through different stations while they weren’t in the dentists’ chairs including a magic show and an educational portion on foods to keep their teeth healthy. “The staff was so childfriendly; it was such a great ﬁrst experience for our students,” said Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon.

Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after ﬁve years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a ﬂood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still ﬁt, the hardwood ﬂoor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Each month, Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District acknowledges the good character of its students with a recognition ceremony. The building-wide initiative is designed to “catch” students displaying acts of kindness, good behavior and citizenship. Anytime students are caught displaying good character, they get a “character counts” card with their name and

reason for the recognition. This year, the initiative was also pushed into the lunchroom, where aides and monitors can also commend a student’s good character. Each month, three names are drawn from each grade and students can choose prizes such as pencils, erasers and books. They also have their picture taken, which is displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway or cafeteria.

Kindergartners in Maritza Benavides’ class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District spend the ﬁrst few weeks in October engaged in a variety of apple activities. The cross-curricular lessons planned throughout the weeks also incorporated English, math, art and music.

Starting with reading books about apples and learning about the different varieties, the students then tasted different types of apples and graphed their favorite picks. Using apple halves, students dipped them in different colors to create their own apple art patterns. Sorting, cutting and making an apple

alphabet helped reinforce skills they had learned at the start of the school year. As one of their culminating activities in the unit, the kindergartners made their own applesauce, dicing the apples, adding the necessary spices and tasting their homemade treat.
