The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own.

This is where Twilight Wish steps in.

Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant.

Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation!

The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple.

You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else.

The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

Last year, Alex earned selection to the Long Island String Festival Association’s secondary school orchestra and the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s All-County musical festival. He will now add All-State musician to his credentials.

This past spring, thousands of students from across New York State, including Alex, auditioned for NYSSMA ensembles. The selection process was highly competitive and based upon evaluation scores

summer, he participated in a six-week music camp through Kinhaven Music School in Vermont.

“I’m extremely proud of Alex and I look forward to all of the music that he’s going to continue to produce,” said his orchestra teacher, Bianca Ferrante. “He is a leader in our music program and sets an example for other students.”

String Musician Adds Another Accolade

The local, national and global impacts of the Sept.

11, 2001 terrorist attacks were the focal points of discussions in social studies classes at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District as people across the nation marked the 18th anniversary.

Ninth grade social studies teacher Jack Zider recalled how the attacks occurred during his first week as a freshman in high school. Now, he teaches September 11 as a historical event to students who were born several

He showed students video clips from the day and asked them to discuss their reactions with each other.

Additionally, because of Amityville’s proximity to New York City, he talked to students about the impact it had on people in the community.

In 2001, Frank O’Brien worked for the MTA and was just a half-mile away from the World Trade Center. Now a social studies teacher at the middle school, he shared his personal experiences from the day.

Mr. O’Brien emphasized the importance of being thankful to and showing respect for the people who fight to preserve freedom. He works with an organization, Operation Gratitude, which sends care packages to members of the armed forces overseas.

His students wrote thankyou letters to be including in those packages.

Since the attacks, Sept.

11 has become known as Patriot Day, and students and staff at the middle school were encouraged to wear red, white and blue.

Big Progress In School Projects It was a productive summer in the Amityville Union Free School District, as several construction projects wrapped up and others progressed greatly from the $69.9 million bond approved by voters in March 2016. The board of education received its monthly update from representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction at the Sept.

Masonry repair work concluded at the Park North Administration Building with the installation of a new concrete ramp and stairs at the back entrance.

Handicapped accessibility was greatly improved at Northwest and Northeast elementary schools with the installation of a new ramp and stairs at each front entrance, and new ADA-compliant bathrooms in the nurses’ offices. Bathrooms were also added in several classrooms at Northeast.

Miles Middle School also was finished this summer.

Significant progress was made on the new addition to Amityville Memorial High School, which will include classrooms, science laboratories, indoor athletic complex and expanded cafeteria.

The block walls around the outside of the building have been installed and work had begun on the exterior brick walls.

Plumbing, electrical and mechanical work continues. Upgrades to the existing building include a new faculty lounge, expanded and renovated library and new ceiling and lighting system in the kitchen and serving area. A large section of the west parking lot was also repaved.

Principals from the five schools presented their reports from year three of the district’s strategic plan, “Putting Amityville on the Map.” Northeast Elementary School Principal Dr. Pauline Collins highlighted the strong educational

program for pre-K and kindergarten students and spoke of the literacy celebrations that are held monthly. At Northwest Elementary School, Principal Kathleen Hyland noted new ways of engaging students in their learning using instructional technology.

Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School Principal Robyn Santiago cited increasing ELA scores at all levels, the creation of a STREAM lab to provide more handson learning experiences and character education programs. Earl Mitchell, principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School, said the launch of the 1:1 Chromebook initiative last year, which gave each student a take-home device, has increased the excitement for learning.

He noted the success of students in math and science, where all students are accelerated and taking high school credit-bearing courses in eighth grade.

High school Principal Edward Plaia noted that more students continue to enroll in college-level Advanced Placement courses. He explained the school’s philosophy in having students take

these challenging and rigorous courses is one of encouragement.

The meeting also included a presentation from Dr. John Coverdale, the president of the Center for Workplace Solutions, on the district’s Diversity

and Inclusiveness Advisory Council. He announced the committee’s charge, and noted that members include administrators, board members, teachers, parents and local leaders.
