The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear!

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide.

Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in.

Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today.

The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else.

The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and

Amityville Rotary Club Applefest The Amityville Rotary Club is once again hosting its everpopular Applefest. The event is Sat., Oct. 5 on the grounds of the Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, 140 Park Ave., Amityville, off of Route 110, Broadway. The Applefest is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers a variety of New York State’s finest apples coming directly from an upstate supplier.

In addition, there will be a vendors, music, food and crafts. The event is open to the public.

OBITUARY - Stephen C. Smith, a lifetime resident of Amityville, LI, died August 28, 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip, LI. He was 67 years old.

Arrangements were under the directions of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville.

Stephen C. Smith, a lifetime resident of Amityville, LI, died August 28, 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip, LI. He was 67 years old.

Stephen was born on April 28, 1952 in New York city to Arthur Q and Helen H, (Shaw) Smith. He was employed by Citigroup Repair Department as a technician.

Stephen was a member of the Amityville Masonic Lodge, and

Sunrise Square Club.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Nancy A (Symington) Smith, his daughter Karen Smith-Higgins (Stephen), his cousin Gregory Harrison, his mother in law Lottie Symington, his brother in law Wesley Symington (Linda) and his brother in law David Symington. A Masonic service was conducted at the funeral home on Friday evening, August 30th,

followed by the funeral service officiated by the Reverend Sandy Koppmann, First United Methodist Church of Amityville.

Interment was on Saturday, August 31st at Amityville Cemetery following a prayer at the funeral home.

Arrangements were under the directions of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.
