Copiague School District staff gathered together on August 28th for the annual Superintendent’s Conference Day to celebrate the successes of the previous year and focus on the district’s goals and vision for the upcoming school year. Opening the morning conference, Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig welcomed back veteran staff members and officially welcomed new staff members into the Copiague family. He also introduced Board of Education members President Brian J. Sales, Second Vice President Doris Fischer and trustees Michael L Greb, Rosemary Natoli and Everett E. Newman III. Speaking on behalf of the entire Board, President Brian J. With the new school year starting on September 2nd, the Amityville School District held its new staff orientation at the district’s central administration offices on August 26th. Beginning with breakfast during which they heard from Amityville Superintendent Dr. Mary Kelly, new teachers and administrators were treated to a day of touring, networking and acclimating themselves to their new jobs. “You’re here today because we have faith and confidence in your ability to help students at Amityville succeed,” Superintendent Kelly said in her address. “We’re
here to support you and to officially welcome you to Amityville.” The newly hired teachers will begin assignments in all of the district’s schools. They took a bus tour of the district and met with key leaders in human resources and the teacher’s union. Also in attendance were Amityville’s board of education members Ronald Moss, Carolyn Dodd, Nathan King and Jeanette Santos. The orientation was held one day prior to the Superintendent’s Conference Day, which welcomed back all staff members for the new school year.

Back To Reality By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a
park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.
Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling… Sunday Funday at its best. Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Conference Day Held Amityville School District Superintendent Dr. Mary Kelly held her traditional Superintendent’s Conference Day at Amityville High School on August 27th. In a massive assembly that gathered faculty and staff from all five of the district’s schools, Dr. Kelly officially welcomed back returning staff and introduced new staff members to their colleagues. “I’m excited about this coming school year,” Kelly said. “We’re focused on creating a culture of achievement together at Amityville and everyone in this organization plays a key role in having a positive influence on the life of a child.” The packed audience in the high school auditorium was treated to a keynote address from Dr. John Hodge, an educational
consultant and co-founder of the Urban Learning and Leadership Center. Hodge discussed the challenges that face educators today, personalizing the address with his own experiences. He emphasized the role that education can play in changing the life course of students. In addition to Dr. Hodge’s discussion, Amityville Board of Education President Lisa Johnson spoke to the assembled staff, wishing them well this year. Other board members in attendance included Ronald Moss, Carolyn Dodd, Nathan King and Jeanette Santos. The Superintendent’s Conference Day takes place every year shortly before the start of the new school year. It provides and opportunity for faculty and staff to network, reconnect and focus on the year’s educational goals.
