Turning Pro By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it
into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder

why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month. In recognition of this worldwide initiative to raise awareness for the disease, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is encouraging everyone to learn to spot the signs of dementia, while keeping loved ones in mind who battle or have lost the fight with this disease each day. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and is the most common cause of dementia. The neurological disease affects an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks. This decline is the result of damage to the areas of the brain involved in cognitive function. Nearly 44 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Only one in four people with Alzheimer’s have been diagnosed. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the world has risen to $605 billion. The social, emotional and financial toll can weigh heavily on Alzheimer’s disease victims and their families. In an effort to increase detection rates and avoid further burdens on the lives of Alzheimer’s patients and their families, ADRC is asking everyone to participate in the AMARANTH Study. This
clinical research study is targeted to men and women between the ages of 55 and 85 who are experiencing gradual and progressive change in memory function over the last six months. The voluntary study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease To determine if individuals qualify for the clinical research study, they must undergo a pre-qualification screener. The results of the pre-qualification will determine if the person may be referred to a local center to discuss the study in further detail. In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.
In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing
a titanium baby. Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms. Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory. What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war. It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

Staff Orientation Prior of the first academic school day of the 20152016 school year, the Copiague School District Board of Education and administration welcomed back all teachers and staff members with a special “Celebration” themed Staff Orientation Day on September 1st. Following a continental breakfast, Copiague staff members congregated to the high school auditorium where they listened to presentations by the Board of Education and district administrators. Hosting her first Staff Orientation as the new Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen Bannon afforded words of welcome and in turn was greeted with a standing ovation from the audience. Dr. Bannon kicked off the
event by sharing a brief synopsis of the career path she took that led her to the role of superintendent and the desire she has to ensure the best for the students of Copiague. “Many times over the course of my career and in the classes I have taken, I have been asked to develop a philosophy of education,” said Dr. Bannon. “I have come to the point in my career where I have culled it down to simply, if it is good for kids, it’s good. That philosophy is what will drive my decision making process.” On behalf of the Board of Education, President Brian J. During the Babylon Citizens Council of the Arts Teen Theatre Awards on June 12th, the district’s production of The Wizard of Oz won the best musical award. Each year, B.A.C.C.A. awards students in The Town of Babylon for outstanding performances in their high school theatre productions. West Babylon students were judged among nine other school districts. In
addition to Best Musical, Alexa Lucchesse (Dorothy) received the award for Outstanding Female Vocal performance by an Actress in a leading role; Angeline Miller (Wicked Witch) was awarded outstanding performance by an actress in a featured role. In addition the production also won Best stage Crew- Kyle Garcia, Kyle Henshaw, Joey Partain, and Joey Valenti.

Super Conference Day While students were enjoying their last day of summer, administrators, teachers and staff members of the Amityville Union Free School District gathered to participate in the district’s annual Superintendent’s Conference Day on August 31st. Congregated in the Amityville Memorial High School auditorium, staff members from the district’s five school buildings were a captive audience as Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly extended a warm welcome and introduced members of
the Board of Education, building administrators and new faculty to the district. In her address, Dr. Kelly provided a recap of accomplishments from the 2014-2015 school year and the new and expanding academic and extracurricular programs that will be implemented for the 2015-2016 school year. Following remarks by Board of Education President Ronald Moss, the audience was treated to two keynote addresses from Carlton S. Ashby, an educational speaker
focused on developing the internal motivation of 21st Century students, and Dr. John W. Hodge, an educational consultant and co-founder of the Urban Learning and Leadership Center. “The positive energy that everyone brings to the first day of school is really contagious, as we recommit ourselves and join together for one common purpose - the academic, social and emotional well-being of our children,” said Dr. Kelly.

Executive Bellone with an update on the status of its education and awareness initiatives throughout the region – including the chapter’s 9th Annual Run/ Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer on Saturday, September 26th, at Belmont Lake State Park. The coalition’s goal is
to provide encouragement and assistance to ovarian cancer survivors and their loved ones through a support and networking system. The chapter serves Suffolk and Nassau counties, and consists of cancer survivors, families, friends, health care professionals and caregivers.

With the end of summer quickly approaching, New York Blood Center is encouraging blood donors to set aside one hour to give the gift of life and strengthen our community’s blood supply. The summer months are traditionally a challenging time for blood centers to collect donated units – school breaks, summer vacations, and warm weather all have negative impacts on blood drive scheduling and donor attendance. About 4.5 million Americans receive blood transfusions every year, and nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. One in seven hospital admissions will need a blood transfusion, including cancer and surgery patients, trauma and burn victims, newborn babies and new mothers.
“We’re encouraging everyone who is eligible to roll up their sleeves and donate,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of Recruitment at New York Blood Center. “Summer blood donations help prevent a shortage, allowing us to continue providing lifesaving units to patients and hospitals.” Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to donate, as their blood can be used in emergency situations when there is no time for blood typing. There is no substitute for blood donations. Blood products have a limited shelf life, and supplies must be continually replenished. A single donation can help save at least three lives when the blood is separated into its components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Red blood cells, for example, are used to make up for blood lost – car accident victims may need as many as 50 or more red cell transfusions.
Plasma and platelets, on the other hand, contain clotting factors to help stop bleeding. They are used to treat patients with blood diseases and patients undergoing chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant. Any company, community organization, place of worship, or individual may host a blood drive. Blood donors receive free mini-medical exams on site including information about their temperature, blood pressure and hematocrit level. Eligible donors include those people at least age 16 (parental consent is required for 16 year-olds), who weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, are in good health and meet all Food & Drug Administration and NY or NJ State Department of Health donor criteria. People age 76 or older may donate if they have a doctor’s note on file with New York Blood Center or if they bring one on the day of the blood drive.

University badges will also be offered in special education, middle school teaching, diverse literature, Long Island coastal studies, and more. To commence the 20152016 school year, the Copiague School District hosted 22 of its newest faculty members during its annual two-day New Teacher Orientation on August 25th and 26th. To kick off the orientation, Dr. Kathleen Bannon, future Superintendent of Schools, Brian J. Sales, Board of Education President, and Todd J. Andrews, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, provided words of welcome and insight to the culture of the Copiague School District. “One phrase that I am
sure you will hear and see many times is ‘Copiague is a great place to live and learn,’ said Mr. Sales. “We stand behind that phrase and believe that all children can learn. The future is dependent on our ability to properly educate our students and we want you to be part of that team that is making great things happen in Copiague every day.” Following the initial introductions, teachers embarked on a short bus tour of the community and were given the opportunity to ask questions about the school district. The
orientation continued with presentations by district administrators on topics including instructional technology, personnel and policy information and how to ensure a successful start to the school year. To conclude the event, new employees met with seasoned teachers in their respective school buildings to discuss best practices and building procedures. “We have every belief that you are going to be highly successful in the job that you are embarking upon,” said Dr. Bannon.
The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, BACCA will be hosting the annual Harvest Moon Gala on Thursday, October 15th, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Chateau La Mer in Lindenhurst. BACCA is proud to be honoring Dan Lauria, this year’s recipient of the Senator Owen H. Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award. All are welcome to this entertaining fundraiser. Tickets are $75 per person and include dinner and dessert, including beer, wine and soda. There will also be musical entertainment and an art exhibition. Dan Lauria is recently coming off a successful NY run of Dinner with the Boys, a play he wrote and also starred in, along with Ray Abruzzo and Richard Zavaglia. Dan has appeared as a guest star in over seventy television episodic programs and
more than twenty Movie Of The Week productions. He has a score of film credits which include, Stakeout, Another Stakeout, and the commercial blockbuster, Independence Day and the Frank Miller production of Will Esiner’s The Spirit. Dan was also in the cult comedy: Alien Trespass. Dan is a very familiar face to the off-off, off and regional theater scene, having performed, written or directed over 50 professional stage productions. In 2010/2011 Dan was seen on Broadway as the legendary coach Vince Lombardi in the long running production of Lombardi, directed by Mr. Thomas Kail, with the beautiful and talented Judith Light playing Marie Lombardi. Dan returned to Broadway in the 2013 and the 2014 production of the Tony nominated: A Christmas Story: The
Musical directed by John Rando. Dan has performed The Guys by Ann Nelson both in NYC and on the road with his dear friend, the wonderful, Ms. Wendie Malik. The Guys is a tribute to the brave firemen who lost their lives at the WTC on 9/11 and it’s a play that Dan is honored to be a part of. Dan is most recognized as the Dad on the highly acclaimed Emmy winning, ABC television show, The Wonder Years.
