Amityville BOE Appoints Dr. Gina Talbert As Next Superintendent Of Schools

At a business meeting on July 12, the Amityville Board of Education appointed Dr. Gina Talbert as the district’s next superintendent of schools, effective Aug. 1. She replaces current superintendent Dr. Edward Fale, who resigned, effective July 31.

Dr. Talbert joins Amityville with more than 36 years of experience in the educational field, most recently serving as superintendent of schools for the Wyandanch Union Free School District, a position she held since 2019. Under Dr. Talbert’s leadership, the district stabilized and elevated its financial stability, implemented additional programming and resources for students, and restored previously eliminated positions within the district. Additionally, under Dr. Talbert’s leadership, Milton L. Olive Middle School was upgraded in its state academic rating from a school in need of “Targeted Support” to a school in “Good Academic Standing” by the New York State Education Department. Dr. Talbert’s proficiency in school improvement also led the district to a 30% increase in the graduation rate during the course of her tenure.

Prior to her superintendency in Wyandanch, Dr. Talbert held various roles, including teacher, assistant principal and principal, as well as positions in central administration, including assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, among others.

Northeast Elementary School in Amityville Summer Academic Success Program. Their theme for the opening weeks were beaches and oceans. Prekindergartners read stories and learned about the beach and animals that live in the ocean. Students also worked on

their fine motor skills by creating crafts and making the ocean as a snack with Jell-O and graham crackers.

Northeast Social Worker Ms. Bermudez is currently teaching social and emotional learning to students in their classrooms. On July 13, Northeast held their

first Parent University, in which parents were invited to discuss and learn about “Purposeful Play.” This program also aims to equip parents with tools on how to foster relationships with their children.

8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, will host the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 1 (check-in begins at 9:00 a.m.).

The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the suppport needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families.

The Walk along the historic Jones Beach

Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. The Walk offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones. Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

Benefits Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of

autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Children With Special Needs Will Help Ultra Runner Finish 100 Miles This September

Founder and CEO of Breakthrough Intensive Physical Therapy, Dr. Christine Astarita, will be running 100 miles within 24 hours on September 9th & 10th, 2023 while wheeling Breakthrough clients in an adaptive stroller to fundraise and aid support for the special needs community. Dr. Astrarita will be running from the Montauk Lighthouse to the Breakthrough office, stopping at the homes of the Angela’s House 501(c)3 along the route. This is the second Run to Breakthrough fundraiser event that Christine and her team are hosting. Back in 2021, she ran 85 miles while pushing

some of Breakthrough’s clients from the Montauk Lighthouse to the Breakthrough office in Islandia, NY. With the help of the community’s donations and local businesses sponsoring the event, over $20,000 was raised for Angela’s House (Long Island based non-profit organization that assists families caring for children with special health care needs, the chronically ill, medically fragile, or those suffering from a life threatening illness). This year, Christine will also be giving away THREE prizes to the top 3 families who create a team on the fundraiser’s website and raise the most money to

support the cause. The first place winner will be receiving a $3,000.00 credit towards their sessions at Breakthrough.

The Second place winner will receive a $2,000.00 credit and the third place winner will receive a $1,000.00 credit towards Breakthrough PT sessions.

Reflecting on the last year’s challenges and experiences, Dr. Astarita decided that she wanted to make the theme of this year’s run, Resilience.

“These children and their families don’t get to choose their challenges. They face adversity every single day; worrying about medical procedures, medication

changes, disruptions in services, advocating for their child’s rights/being their child’s voice, long hospital stays… the list can go on and on. These families define resilience.

Labor Day Weekend Travel Tips

Labor Day is celebrated on the same day in the United States and Canada each year. An annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers, Labor Day (known as Labour Day in Canada), occurs on the first Monday of September each year. Though its status as the end of summer is not technically accurate, Labor Day marks the unofficial end to the season of fun in the sun for millions of people across both the U.S. and Canada. That makes the weekend preceding Labor Day one of the most popular times to travel. Indeed, data from the Transportation Security Administration indicate that the Friday before Labor Day 2022 was the second busiest travel day at U.S. airports that summer. Travel was equally popular on Labour Day weekend 2022 in Canada, where the online booking platform Kayak reports searches for

international flights had increased by 104 percent compared to the year prior.

Labor Day weekend travel figures to be just as popular this year, so travelers can remember these tips as they plan one last summer getaway.

• Book as early as possible. With so many people

interested in traveling on Labor Day weekend, it behooves all travelers to plan ahead. Competition for hotel rooms and other lodgings might be steep, and individuals who plan to fly might have trouble finding seats on flights that leave during peak travel hours the longer

they delay.

• Consider traveling by car. Air travel aficionados had some good news and bad news as the summer travel season began in 2023. Data from FlightAware indicated that flight cancellations were down in 2023 compared to 2022. However, FlightAware

data also indicated there were an average of 7,000 to 9,000 flight delays per day in the U.S. in the first half of 2023. No one wants to send off the last weekend of summer with a lengthy flight delay, so travelers who want to spend as much time as possible celebrating may want to drive rather than fly to their destinations.

• Drive during off-peak hours. Air travelers must cede some control over when to depart, but drivers can pick their own time to hit the road. Starting a trip during off-peak hours, such as early in the morning or even after rush hour on Thursday night, may enable drivers to avoid traffic.

• Travel light. Warm weather tends to linger into Labor Day weekend, so there’s no need to pack heavy. That’s especially noteworthy for air travelers. The lighter

travelers can pack for a flight, the less likely they will need to check a bag. That decreases the likelihood that bags will be lost if a flight is delayed or canceled, and it also allows travelers to deplane and leave the airport without having to wait around to claim their bags.

• Extend the trip. An extra day at the end of the trip can help travelers avoid the crowds on the way home. Parents may need to travel on Labor Day if school is already in session or starting on Tuesday. But travelers who have no reason to rush home can get an extra day of fun in the sun and travel home on a day that tends to be less hectic.

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. Travelers can keep various strategies in mind to get the most out of summer’s swan song.
