B I R T H D A Y CELEBRATION - On June
21st, Al Trost, a longtime resident of Our Lady of Consolation celebrated his 90th birthday. Al was joined in this celebration by family, staff and friends he made over the years. Al keeps very busy and active by playing cards, doing trivia and enjoying the great food prepared for him, as well as participating in the Annual Golden Games, in which he has won many medals. Al grew up in Flushing and enlisted in the Army from October 1942 through December 1945. He later worked in the plumbing business, drove a cab and was employed by Commander Oil. When he married his first wife Marie, in 1947, they relocated to Copiague where they were blessed with seven children. Al’s family has now grown into 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Dance Festival A Success Internationally recognized dance companies and fast-rising choreographers shared the picturesque stage of the 19th annual edition of Fire Island Dance Festival on July 19th-21st, raising a record $393,647 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. For the third year in a row the festival set a fundraising record, surpassing last year’s alltime high of $374,260. In its 19 editions, Fire Island Dance Festival has raised $3.3 million for the most vulnerable among us, helping to ensure they receive life-saving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. The festival, performed outdoors on the shores of the Great South Bay in Fire Island Pines, included world premieres of works choreographed by Kyle Abraham, Pontus Lidberg, Jeremy McQueen and Josh Prince. Humorist, actor and writer Mo Rocca returned for a second year as host, this time sharing his dance prowess in a whimsical, Al Blackstonechoreographed version of “Turkey Lurkey Time” from the Broadway musical Promises, Promises. Rocca is a regular on CBS Sunday Morning, star of Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli and a featured panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me! This year’s Fire Island Dance Festival featured
more than 50 professional dancers entertaining standing-room-only crowds with ballet, modern, contemporary and Broadway dance. “It’s humbling to see, year after year, the support of the Fire Island Pines community, our generous donors and sponsors, the immensely talented dancers and choreographers and our committed core of tireless volunteers” said Denise Roberts Hurlin, founding director of Dancers Responding to AIDS. “When we started this event I never dreamed that so many would continually join us in this fight, which is as important today as it was 19 years ago.” This year’s memorable performances: · Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater offered Robert Battle’s “Strange Humors,” a bare-chested male duet exploring mysterious passions and explosive confrontations of wits and prowess. The dance was once described by Battle as a deconstructed exploration of his fascination with the tango. · Three exuberant dancers from Los Angelesbased BODYTRAFFIC delivered “o2joy,” a playful, contemporary dance piece set to great American jazz music that expressed the pure love of dance with lighthearted humor. · The Broadway Dance Lab, in a number choreographed by founder Josh Prince, drafted six men to celebrate the

Graduate Program Rankings Stony Brook University has been ranked eighth on U.S.News & World Report’s Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs list for 2013. The rankings recognized the best online graduate nursing programs based on factors such as faculty credentials, academic support services, technologies offered to students, graduation rates and admissions selectivity. “We are very honored that our online nursing programs are among the best in the nation,” said Dr. Lee Anne Xippolitos, Dean of Stony Brook’s School of Nursing. “This ranking is important because it affirms our commitment to be a national leader in nursing education through the delivery of innovative student-centered curricula.” In 1994, the School of Nursing developed one of the nation’s first distance-
learning programs, Nurse Midwifery. The distance education nursing roster has since expanded to include clinical specialties in Adult Health, Child Health, Neonatal Health, Mental Health and Women’s Health. The School also offers an online Post-Master’s Advanced Certificate Program, a Master of Science in Nursing Education Program, and plans to introduce a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership Program in January 2014. Stony Brook’s learnercentered curricula prepare nurses to promote, maintain, supervise and restore health; identify health risks; and assess, diagnose and manage patients. Students are prepared to function as nurse educators, leaders, consultants, advocates and change agents — key components of the
advanced practice role. Enrollment for the online nursing programs is on the rise, said Dean Xippolitos. Currently, there are 475 students, up from 383 in fall 2012. To compile the rankings, U.S.News & World Report sent questionnaires to 471 institutions that granted Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission accredited graduate degree programs in nursing. Respondents were asked to identify whether in academic year 2012–2013 they would
be offering a master’s in nursing degree through Internet-based distance education courses. Between the start of data collection in late July 2012 and the fall 2012 closing date, 280 institutions (59 percent) replied, with 101 (36 percent) reporting they planned to offer an online master’s in nursing degree program. Headquartered at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Talon Air, Inc., premier provider of luxury private air transportation, worked closely with not-for-profit Patient AirLift Services (PALS) to fly seven children who have experienced traumatic burns to The Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp in Union, CT early this week. The camp, which provides services for children ages 8-18, is supported by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation and is the only one of its kind in the Northeast. Accompanied by two adult counselors, the seven children, ages 11-16, were driven from Canada across the border to Massena, NY where they were flown by Talon Air to Bradley, CT near the camp. During their week-long stay, the children are participating in activities focused on building self-esteem and self-confidence, overcoming anxieties, and adapting physically and socially to their injuries. Since 2011, Talon Air has partnered with PALS to assist in getting essential healthcare services to children and adults who are not able to endure commercial travel, have limited financial resources, or live in an area where top-level care is not available. “Most kids leave camp with a T-shirt. Ours leave with a new outlook on life.� Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation presented Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E., a free two day children’s bereavement camp held this year on Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th. The event takes place on the beautiful grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport with the goal to help grieving children of Nassau and Suffolk counties and their caregivers heal from their loss in a safe, fun and healthy environment. The camp is christened “Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E.� in memory of Robert L. Sweeney, who died while being cared for by Good Shepherd Hospice in February of 2002. Celebrating its tenth summer of operation, Camp H.O.P.E. welcomes grieving families of all faiths to share their grief experiences with others. The program is open to
families who were served by Good Shepherd Hospice as well as from the community at large. Children participants are between the ages of five and seventeen and are required to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at the camp. Paralleling the children’s progress over the two days, adult caregivers also meet at Camp Alvernia. The adult program offers a variety of discussion and support groups, workshops, and educational materials, giving participants a chance to share their stories and concerns with one another. In doing so, adult attendees also learn more about both their self-care and fulfilling the needs of their grieving children. The camp is staffed by the professional members of the Good Shepherd Hospice Bereavement Department as well as trained volunteers from both the hospice and

QUESTION: Can the source of pain be hard to pin point? ANSWER: It often can be more difficult than one imagines to locate the correct tooth as the pain source. The problem is that pain from the nerves in the tooth pulp may be referred to other teeth on the same side. The nerve supply to the tooth pulp contains only pain fibers and does not provide a sense of location. The absence of position-indicating nerves in the tooth pulp and the ability of pain arising in one tooth to be referred to another tooth on the same side of the mouth, in either the upper or lower jaw. This frequently leads a patient to feel pain in a healthy tooth, and not in the tooth that actually needs treatment. These factors emphasize the importance of clinical and X-ray examination of each patient by his dentist. Thorough dental examination is essential to give the dentist accurate information with which treatment of diseased teeth can be undertaken.

On July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its third annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Seventy golfers took part in the event, which raised $70,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care. A rare, valuable seventeenth-century Dutch oil painting - once in poor condition and in urgent need of attention - has been conserved and is now hanging again in the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum. Hendrick Dubbels, View of Boulogne, c. 1670 Oil on canvas, 36” x 55” Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, Centerport, NY The conservation of the work, View of Boulogne by Hendrick Dubbels (16201676), was performed by the accomplished conservator Alexander Katlan and financed by a $5,000 grant from the Conservation Treatment Grant Program of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, a re-granting agency of the New York State Council on the Arts. Katlan began the project in November 2012 in his painting-conservation studio -- temperature- and humiditycontrolled like a museum gallery -- in Flushing, NY. The project took nearly six months as intervals were required between steps and some steps had to be repeated. Katlan returned the painting to the museum in
June and it is hanging now in the Memorial Wing of the Vanderbilt Mansion. Stephanie Gress, the Vanderbilt Museum’s director of curatorial services, said the painting’s darkened varnish was cleaned in 1986 and the work was stabilized by adding a cloth lining to the back of the canvas. Katlan said he performed limited intervention: “I did not undo any previous repairs because of paint sensitivity. The goal was for the painting to be more ‘readable,’ to make the details easier for the viewer to see.” He talked about his work: “Dripping water and dust caused most of the damage, along with a bit of mold. I needed to repair puncture damage and a sixinch tear, as well as areas where the paint was cracked, separating from the canvas or flaking off. After completing a conservation and lab report on the damage and the structural problems, I took close-up photographs then went to work.” Using binocular magnification equipment, he removed the dust and water-drop residue with a pH-adjusted solvent. next step was to repair the puncture dents, damages, tears and cracking with a heated spatula and an adhesive that physically stabilizes and strengthens the canvas. He filled and painted the damaged areas to match the surrounding colors. Textural differences in the surface of the painting made it impossible to conceal all of the damaged areas. Katlan applied a final, overall layer of non-discoloring resin varnish to unify the surface. Little is known of Dubbels’s life, Gress said. He was born in Amsterdam in 1620 and worked as a painter of seascapes and winter landscapes from circa 1641 until his death in 1676. (Some historical sources list his lifespan as 1621-1707.) “A lot of Dubbels’s work was attributed to another artist and it is very rare to find his paintings in the United States,” Gress said. “Much of his work is in collections in London and Paris. Our painting, original to Mr. Vanderbilt’s collection, may be one of the few in this country.”

Is open to boys and girls in grades 1-12. Our Intramurals are geared for all players. Learning and teamwork are emphasized and all players play equally. The season runs from November through March. Fee: Grades 1-3 $45, Grades 4-5 $90, Grades 6-8 $115, Grades 9-12 $125. (Fee includes a 2-sided blue/white numbered jersey). Is open to boys and girls grades 1-8. The meets are on weekends at various tracks on Long Island-all outdoors. The season runs from Sept through late Oct. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced that $200 million is available to fund requests from healthcare and human service providers and other communitybased organizations following the impact of Superstorm Sandy. The funding is made available by the Superstorm Sandy Supplemental Social Services Block Grant to cover necessary expenses resulting from the storm, including social, health and mental health services for individuals, and for repair, renovation and rebuilding of health care facilities, mental hygiene facilities, child care facilities and other social services facilities. “During and after Superstorm Sandy, New York State’s health and human service providers performed critical work for New Yorkers, and they continue to be essential resources to communities recovering from the storm,” Governor Cuomo said. “These organizations serve the needs of many of the State’s most vulnerable residents including our seniors, children and low-income families, and in their line of work, they have also suffered financial losses and damage to their facilities from the storm. This funding will provide the support they need to continue helping their communities, and I urge those impacted to apply for this assistance.” To address the needs of these critical health and human service providers and the populations they serve, New York will distribute $200 million in federal Sandy SSBG funding through a public and transparent request for proposals. Applicants can seek funding for: · Unreimbursed costs of facility repair, rebuilding and renovation for child care providers, health and mental hygiene facilities, senior centers and similar facilities, and other health and human services facilities in response to Superstorm Sandy, including measures to make damaged facilities more resilient for future severe weather events. · Reimbursement for child care, health, mental health, behavioral health, employment, senior-focused and other direct service delivery costs and costs of lost and damaged materials and supplies incurred as a result of Superstorm Sandy. · Reimbursement to food banks, food pantries and related organizations and public agencies for costs resulting from increased demand for food relief during and following Superstorm Sandy. · Enhanced child care, food/nutrition, health, mental health, behavioral health, employment, legal, seniorfocused, volunteer coordination, case management and other direct services to meet the ongoing needs of Sandy-impacted New Yorkers. · Equipment and supplies required to deliver enhanced services in Sandy-impacted areas. · Other eligible health and social services costs incurred during Sandy as well as ongoing needs from

Journey Of A Lifetime By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Where to begin… First trip abroad… first time on a plane – ever… first time away on vacation with 12 members of the family – or, the “traveling circus,” as I like to call it… So many memories, so many column topics… How does one encapsulate a nine-day, eight-night whirlwind cross-country excursion around Ireland, home of (at least a portion of) my paternal ancestors? To start, it was quite the action-packed adventure, from the first wakeup call of each morning right on through to the final toast of the evening. In between, there was no shortage of breathtaking scenery to take in, of history to absorb, of culinary
choices to sample, all the while experiencing it with family – as well as the other members of our tour group fortunate enough to ride along with the Ryan Family Magical Mystery Tour. Being the photog that I am, I was most looking forward to capturing the entire journey on camera, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. And that I did, perhaps a bit excessively, as my final total (minus many deletes along the way) came in just shy of 800 pictures. But being able to preserve it all – the sights and sounds, the candid moments, the vain attempts to gather everyone for “just one more” group photo… you can’t put a price on that. I may never travel to Ireland again, and maybe not
anywhere with the same cast of characters – which was why this trip was such a “mustgo,” despite my own lack of plane travel experience. You only live once, right? And, in the end, it was exactly as I expected, exciting and thrilling and adventurous and memorable in every way. And now that I have a passport, it sure gave me the bug to expand that itinerary to other countries that I’ve always wanted to see. Hmmm… where to next? But future plans aside, all the months of preparation, both at home and at work, certainly paid off in the form of a precious memory I will always carry with me. And if ever that memory starts to fade, I have about 800 or so photos to refresh it!

It Is A Time To Be Accommodated Not Accommodating When making funeral arrangements I often hear the grieving family worry about this person or that person. The family worries about how people would find out about the funeral and how they would get to the funeral home in time for the funeral. If they should have visiting one day or two days or no visiting at all. When asked for advice, I recommend that the family do what is best for them. It is the immediate family that must be accommodated by all others. It is not the obligation of the immediate family who has just suffered the loss of their mother or father or wife or husband that need worry about everyone else’s wants. It is everybody else’s job to make sure the immediate family has what they need or want. In other words the immediate family should be accommodated by everyone else and not be worrying about accommodating everyone else’s wishes. Under most circumstances there isn’t any place in the world that if a person truly desired to come to the funeral he or she could not get to New York in less than 36 hours. If the family wishes they can delay the service for a day or two, but it should be the immediate family’s choice and not delayed at the insistence of others. It is difficult enough to cope with the loss of a loved one without worrying about the needs of everyone else. It is not selfish of the immediate family to only consider their needs but rather it is selfish of others not to consider the needs of the immediate family. After all when all the rest of the world returns to their normal life the immediate family must begin to pick up the pieces to their shattered lives. 260388N0807

Six hard-working and dedicated young mothers graduated the Nassau BOCES Teenage Parenting Program (TAP) this June. All six will be attending college this fall. Helping them celebrate the milestone, in addition to friends and family, were six healthy babies. The program is a vital support network that enables pregnant and parenting teens to continue their high school education and become responsible, competent adults. In addition to a strong academic curriculum, the program fosters these teens as both students and mothers. College fairs encourage students to pursue their education, while Mommy and Me classes help them develop parenting skills. There are numerous speakers brought in during the year to guide
and advise, and each student has a mentor to lend help and support. This year, young mothers received gifts of books from the Nassau Reading Council, to get them started on their children’s early literacy. Student Wendy Blanco was honored with the distinguished George Farber Outstanding Student award and attended a ceremony earlier this year. At the intimate commencement ceremony, program alum Rosa Alvarado from the Class of 2007 spoke. “TAP gave me the
freedom to focus on my classes, knowing that my child was being well cared for,” Alvarado reminisced, lauding her “understanding teachers, who helped me to graduate and rooted for me to succeed.” She then spoke of her hard road after high school and the challenges she faced – and overcame. “I’m making it,” Alvarado said, “and I know that you can too. You can do whatever you want with your life. It’s your choice. Go make your dreams your reality.”
