As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently teamed up with the Suffolk County Police Department, Amityville Police Department and EAC Network’s Safe Start program to conduct free child safety seat inspections. The inspections ensure children are properly and safely restrained in a vehicle, as well as educating parents on how to correctly install and use child safety seats. Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death of children in this country. The latest research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that approximately 46 percent of car and booster seats are misused in a way that could reduce their effectiveness and that proper car seat use reduces the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers. “The importance of making sure that our children are as safe as they can be while traveling in vehicles cannot be overstated,” said Presiding Officer SPECIAL FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYER PROGRAMS*

I would like to give a special thanks to the Suffolk County Police Department and Amityville Police Department for participating in this important event.” As part of Governor Cuomo’s Traffic Safety Committee’s “Safe New York” initiative, the EAC Network partners with local police departments to provide free child seat safety inspections for residents. The inspection takes less than 15 minutes and includes a safety check of the car seat and verification that it is properly installed and appropriate for the intended child passenger. A car seat that is found to be defective or inappropriate can be exchanged for a new seat, free of charge. “Three out of four car seats are incorrectly installed, leading to a greater risk of injury and death in a motor vehicle accident,” said Angela Brockmann, Supervisor for EAC Network. “More than one-third of children 12 and younger who died in crashes in 2014 were unbuckled and many could have survived if they had been properly buckled in. Senator Michael Venditto, in conjunction with the Integrated Medical Foundation, recently sponsored a free prostate cancer PSA test program at the Amityville Public Library. Men who participated in the program were able to receive a free PSA blood test, regardless of whether or not they had insurance. Prostate Cancer is one of the most common

forms of cancer among men. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. “Successful treatment of prostate cancer often depends on early detection. That is why it is so important for men to get screened annually. I thank the Integrated Medical Foundation for once again

Caumsett State Park Happenings

A $2.9 million c y b e r s e c u r i t y, manufacturing and health information technologies U.S. Department of Labor job training grant – the largest single grant in Suffolk County Community College history – has been awarded to the college, according to college President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. The college will collaborate with Suffolk County Workforce Development Board, New York State Department of Labor, Suffolk County Department of Labor and independent business, including Alken Industries, Inc.; GKN Aerospace, Inc.; Precipart, Inc.; Custom Computer Specialists, Inc.

The $2,949,237 Resources and Education that Support Training Opportunities within the Regional Economy (RESTORE) Grant, according to McKay, will be used to train individuals by providing them with the skills and credentials required to meet the growth in cybersecurity, manufacturing and health information technolog RESTORE is part of the federal government’s

national TechHire initiative that is funded by H1B visa fees and intended to train local workforces with the skills required by regional industry. “The RESTORE Grant will allow our college to focus new and additional resources on recognizing and empowering residents in our region with the education and training they need to develop new skills and earn higher wages,” said McKay. McKay explained that some workers may be just starting their careers, while others may be older workers who don’t have the basic skills to allow them to assume more responsibility and reach higher paying

roles. Others could also be workers who may have the competencies, but not formal credentials, to excel at a more senior-level job. The RESTORE Grant will provide the resources for retraining individuals

College Grant Received and upskilling to earn an associate’s degree and transfer to a baccalaureate program for expanded career options. Bootcamp training programs will be developed and students will prepare for online

coursework while learning valuable industry and job readiness skills. McKay said the college envisions the RESTORE Grant providing training for about 350 students.

TAKING PRIDE IN WHERE WE LIVE WE have a problem and I’m not sure how to fix it. DO YOU? Last week, I drove through Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Every residential community was CLEAN AS A WHISTLE. I’ve been in Arizona, the Carolina’s and Indiana. ALL CLEAN. Saturday, I turned off the Southern State Parkway (the Route 109 exit), and there is TRASH EVERYWHERE. I drove down Wellwood Avenue, and there is TRASH EVERYWHERE. I drove on Montauk Highway toward Babylon Village and witnessed a young person throw a bag of GARBAGE out the car window. A minute later, they threw out their drink cup. I pulled up next to the driver’s window and told the parents what their kids had just done. They told me to go @%&#! and to mind my own business. So I ask YOU, how do we fix this growing problem? Understandably, we are hesitant to approach a litterbug because you never know how they are going to respond. Obviously, they’re not right and could care less. We could blame the parents, but many of the parents (like the ones I encountered) are just as bad. There is only so much our politicians and law enforcement can do.

I personally am making a daily commitment to pick up a minimum of “JUST ONE” piece of trash every day that is not my own. I may end up picking up more than “JUST ONE,” but I am pledging to pick up at least “JUST ONE” piece of trash. So I ask YOU, can you pick up “JUST ONE”? How would our neighborhoods look if everyone picked up “JUST ONE” every day? You get the picture. So I ask YOU, can you pick up “JUST ONE”? BOB MEADE
