The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce it is hosting an exhibition of paintings/sculpture this August as part of the first annual “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition that will feature a $500 purchase prize that will be awarded to the best artwork in the exhibit. The show will be held in the Society’s Reichert Family Center’s Cosden-Price Gallery. This exhibit will be on display from August 9th through August 23rd, in the gallery, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold. The $500 “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” - which will be awarded to the best work in the show - is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946). A native of Scotland who trained extensively in Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929 and settled in Southold, from where he traveled up and down the east coast, painting portraits and local scenery. His wife, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell, was the founder and first

Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Out of the submissions, only 20 works will be selected to be included in the “North Fork Annual” exhibition. It will be from those works that the purchase prize winner

will be selected. The work selected as the winner of the prize will join the permanent collection of the historical society. The winner will be announced at the opening reception for the exhibition, which is being held on Friday, August 8th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All of the remaining artworks selected for the exhibition will be available for sale at that time and for the duration of the exhibition. There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

ANSWER: You expect your child to have minor accidents. Cuts and bruises are usually easily mended. If, however, the child should suffer a fractured tooth as the result of an accident, there may be need for immediate treatment to save the tooth. When just a small piece of a tooth has been chipped off and it is not loose or causing pain, you may be able to wait the normal time for an appointment. If a large piece of the tooth has been broken, however, or if you can see that the pink tissue at the center of the tooth has been exposed, emergency treatment is needed. In the initial treatment, the dentist will remove the damaged portion of the nerve and then put a protective coating on the tooth. If it's a "baby" tooth, the dentist will do whatever can be done to save it so that the permanent tooth will erupt in its proper position. If it's a permanent tooth, the tooth will be restored and protected.

Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Congrats To The Class Marching across the Lou Howard field, the Amityville High School Class of 2014 was met with rousing cheers and applause as they celebrated their graduation on June 28th. The AMHS symphonic band, under the direction of Brian Wishin, played “Pomp and Circumstance” as a sea of red and silver proceeded into the ceremony. Sgt. John Kreyer, commander of VFW Post 7223, began the ceremony by introducing the six members of the Class of 2014 who will be entering the military. He called up to the stage Latryce Gaddy (U.S. Army), Jamel Jenkins (U.S. Marine Corps), Mykel McLamb (U.S. National Guard), Jessica Rubio (U.S. Army), Gavin Stevens (U.S. Marine Corp) and Joseph Thomas (U.S. Army) to recognize and honor them for their decision to serve their country. Interim Principal Dr. Mary DeRose congratulated the class on their accomplishments thus far, offering words of advice for the next leg of their journey. “You are a caring, compassionate group of young people who have the spirit and energy to change the things that need to be changed in this world,” Dr. DeRose said. She compared the challenges to those of David and Goliath, telling the graduates to stand strong no matter what they face. “There will be times you will be the underdog and face a much stronger opponent,” she

said. “On your journey through life, you will encounter many situations where you will be the underdog. Class of 2014, go forward and take down Goliath.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary Kelly also commended the graduates on their success. “It’s been an honor and privilege to watch you grow into the

confident, kind and passionate young men and women you have become,” she said. “Today is a milestone that marks a wonderful chapter in your life. Take time to recognize the people who have made this possible – your family, friends, teachers, coaches and advisers. It’s time now for you to chart the course, set the sails and take

charge of the next leg of your journey.” Salutatorian Bilah Verno said she believed every one of her fellow classmates has what it takes to be successful in life. “Students in this class can do great things if we apply ourselves to the maximum capacity,” Verno said. “We overcame obstacles that were put before us. No matter what path you take it life, give it your all and you will succeed.” Valedictorian David Holmes asked his fellow classmates how hard they are willing to work for what they want out of life. “What are you willing to do for what you believe?” he asked. “Nobody said it would be easy. We are a class of many different races, ethnicities and personalities. Today we come together as one, the Class of 2014. Our journey is not over. Learn from your mistakes; grow into the amazing people I know you all are. Your life is your book. You write the pages. How would you like people to read it?” After remarks by 2014 President Stanley Colas and class adviser Maria Carrua, who both offered congratulations and well wishes for the soon-to-be graduates, the presentation of diplomas was met with roaring applause by all.
