Peter Michaelsen, the district’s assistant superintendent for business, explained that the repairs and renovations cannot be funded through the annual school budget due to the state-imposed property tax levy cap. However, by funding the projects through a bond referendum, the district would benefit from receiving approximately 75 percent in state building aid, greatly reducing the cost to community residents. The committee characterized its findings as either high, medium or low priority. Tracy Conhiser-Uy of Wendell, the district’s architect, identified areas that need to be addressed in each building, including health, safety and welfare; educational program, which includes space needs for classroom and support services as well as science and music; preventive maintenance; items at the end of

Playground Enhancement For the eighth consecutive year, the students of Northeast Elementary School in Amityville teamed up with the Town of Babylon and New York State Assemblyman Bob Sweeny’s office to help others in the community. This year, Northeast students and staff participated in the “Peaceful Playground” project as part of the Town of Babylon’s Global Youth Service Day program. Northeast School was provided with a blueprint

by the Peaceful Playgrounds organization to help guide them with measurements, layout, spacing and game placement to colorfully mark the surface of their playground. The goal is to create new and engaging games and activities for children. The redesigned playground surface provides students with the ability to enjoy hopscotch, scattered circles, an alphabet grid, a number grid and a crossoverwalking grid. Assemblyman Sweeney’s

office and the Town of Babylon sponsor the effort, which not only enhances the playground experience at the school, but also promotes collaboration and service in Northeast’s young students. The playground surface also helps the school to manage and structure their play area. The philosophy of the Peaceful Playgrounds program is to promote friendship and reduce playground confrontations.

Participants will be trained in jumping, sprinting and hurdling. The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers…

I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You

work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.

Bilah Verno has been loading up on advanced science courses in preparation for a career as pediatric nurse practitioner. Yet, she’s not putting all her eggs in one basket, as she intends to pursue her undergraduate degree as a double major in accounting and nursing. in Farmingdale State College prep program of the same terminology, Bilah knows her advanced studies, taking anatomy and physiology, SUPA forensics science, chemistry, AP environmental science, pre-calculus, AP calculus, AP world, and AP U.S. literature. She has even studied physics independently. A member of both the National Honor and National World Languages honor societies since 2011, Bilah has made High Honor Roll dating back to the ninth grade. Extracurricular activities, community service and overall hard work exemplify Bilah’s school career. Jay Fiedler, former NFL Quarterback for the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets and Director of the Sports Academy at Brookwood Camps addressed a student assembly at Bridges Academy in West Islip earlier this month about his path to success as a student and professional athlete. Fiedler, from Oceanside, is offering his story of his athletic and academic success as a model for students to follow. “I have good experiences and good memories to share,” Fiedler, who earned a BA Degree in Engineering Sciences at Dartmouth

College said, adding, “I think those experiences can help others achieve their goals. Working hard, working the right way; this is what it’s all about.” His path to success is a story of determination and perseverance.
