In her remarks, Mrs. Altruda spoke of the bright new beginning that awaits each graduate. “As you move forward in your lives, remember to dream big and believe that you are capable of greatness,” advised Mrs. Altruda. “Embrace the senior class theme, ‘With Every Ending is a New Beginning’ and celebrate the circle of life. For each stage of your life that comes to an end the future shines with great possibilities of a new beginning.” Following the theme of perseverance, “I encourage you to dream big and work hard in fulfilling your dreams,” remarked Dr. Bannon.“Today is proof that if you focus on your dreams and put effort and hard work into those dreams you can achieve them.” Class of 2015 Salutatorian Melanie Barreiro used the metaphor of a gymnastic springboard to advise her fellow classmates. “The point of a spring board is to give you a well needed boost,” she explained. “Copiague has tried its

hardest to provide that for every single one of us.” Valedictorian Natalie Korba offered words of reflection through the use of core subject area concepts including math, history, biology and English literature. She then went on to share her thoughts on how Copiague has prepared the graduates for the next chapter of their lives. “The intellectual and social knowledge that we have accumulated from growing up in a place as diverse and welcoming as Copiague, has already given us a step up in life,” she said. “Today may be the end of our journey together but it is only the beginning of our legacy. We are the Class of 2015 and we will make history.” After Mrs. Altruda presented eager graduates with their diplomas, they moved their tassel from right to left and celebrated by tossing their caps into the air. Following the recessional march, they reunited with their loved ones as official alumni of the Copiague School District.

Donâ€™t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as itâ€™s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I â€“ both former dancers â€“ decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably

warm for late September (like, approaching 90Âş warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, thatâ€™s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Letâ€™s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.

Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, donâ€™t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they wonâ€™t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose â€“ which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were â€“ a pair of size 9 (Iâ€™m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Reunion Location Change

The Lindenhurst High School Class of 1990 has recently changed the venue for its Reunion Celebration, but has kept the same date and time. It will still be held on July 17th, 2015, from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., but it will now take place at the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1421, 883 South Broadway in Lindenhurst. Northeast School in the Amityville Union Free School District held its annual moving up ceremony on June 23rd to celebrate kindergarten students advancing to the next level in their educational journeys. During each of the school’s three kindergarten ceremonies, family, friends, faculty, administrators and members of the Board of Education were musically and visually entertained as kindergarten students

sang and danced to songs selected by their teachers. The sounds of popular songs such as Firework made famous by Katy Perry and Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World filled the gymnasium along with applause from the audience. Additionally, students from Maria Lievano’s class had members of the audience up on their feet dancing and clapping along to their upbeat performance of Anything by Hedley.

Prior to Principal Dr. Pauline Collins’s closing remarks, select students were acknowledged and presented with perfect attendance awards. Under the direction of music teacher Nicole Altamura, kindergarteners concluded the ceremony singing Just Imagine, from the children’s television show Barney and All for One, performed in Disney’s High School Musical 2.

Copiague Ceremony In the gymnasium that will become very familiar to them, eighthgrade students from Copiague Middle School received their diplomas of completion during a moving up ceremony held at Walter G. O’ Connell Copiague High School on June 24th. Surrounded by family, friends and fellow classmates, the ceremony included special remarks from administrators and peers as well as the presentation of certificates. “The high school teachers are going to take to you to the next level,” said Associate Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bannon. “If you continue to put in the effort and hard work

you showed in the middle school you will be ready to tackle high school work.” In addition to her words of encouragement, Dr. Bannon challenged the students to branch out and be active in the school clubs and athletics that are available in high school. During the ceremony, members of the Board of Education, students and welcomed guests also listened as Valedictorian Aaron Eng and Salutatorian Abigail Romero reminisced on their middle school experiences and expressed their anticipation for many opportunities that await them at the high school level. than to celebrate diversity, to celebrate acceptance and how important it is to love yourself and one another.” Following the formation of the rainbow, classes visited different classrooms to sing songs, share poems and participate in various other dignity-related activities.

After a musical interlude by the symphonic band (featuring some seniors making their last performance with the band), salutatorian Alexyss Robinson addressed her graduating classmates. Robinson quoted from civil rights leader Malcolm X, emphasizing the importance of education as a path to success and to building a better future. Valedictorian Yundai Hu followed Robinson’s address, echoing her sentiments that education will lead to many accomplishments down the road. “Wherever we come from,” she said. “Whatever our race or gender… we can go on to do great

things. Class of 2015: good luck!” Senior Advisor Cara Garofalo and class president Ahliyah Hunter also spoke to the class just before the presentation of diplomas. “You should feel a sense of pride,” Garofalo said. “After hours of studying you’ve made it. I’m amazed at the strength of these young adults.” “Everyone should be proud of what we’ve done and this is just the beginning,” said Hunter. “I wish you all nothing but the best. The memories made in high school will never fade.” Hunter also took the time to thank Dr. DeRose for her years of guidance and encouragement. More than 225 students at Amityville Memorial High School made the official transition to adulthood at the school’s commencement exercise held on the football field on June 27th. In front of family members, friends, faculty and administrators, the graduating Class of 2015 moved their tassels and tossed their caps into the air before they walked off the field for the last time in their high school career. The commencement featured a processional of the graduates walking out to Pomp and Circumstance played by the high school’s symphonic band, and the presentation of colors by members of the local VFW and American Legion posts. Writing a New Chapter To celebrate the accomplishments of their fifth-grade students, the four elementary schools in the Copiague School District – Deauville Gardens East, Deauville Gardens West, Great Neck Road and Susan E. Wiley – hosted individual Class Day moving up ceremonies. Parents, faculty members, administrators, and invited guests attended the class day ceremonies, at which the students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement. During the ceremonies, awards were conferred for academic excellence in core subject areas as well as the Presidential Education Award. Students also demonstrated their musical talents and

entertained the audience by performing special musical selections in between award presentations. At each elementary school, the students heard words of encouragement from their respective principals, as well as Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig. “We are very proud of your accomplishments,” said Mr. Leunig. “At the middle school you are going to have many opportunities to get involved with clubs and athletics. Get involved in as many as you can but make sure academics always comes first.” Following Mr. Leunig’s theme of taking advantage of opportunities afforded to them, Associate Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bannon

addressed the students and guests at the Deauville Gardens West and Great Neck Road ceremonies. “Everyone sitting in this room can be whatever they choose to be however you can’t do it by sitting back and letting life pass you by,” stated Dr. Bannon. “Build on what you have started here at the elementary level. This is the first step and you are certainly ready for the next step to middle school.” Following the presentation of diplomas, the newest class of elementary school graduates gathered with parents, family members and friends to rejoice in completing this chapter of their educational careers.

Third Graders Move Up

More than 230 students at Northwest Elementary School in Amityville made the official transition from third-grade, to fourthgrade at a new school when they walked in their moving up ceremony on June 24th. Held in the auditorium at Amityville Memorial High School, the students filed into their seats to

“Pomp and Circumstance” and took part in a classwide singing of We Are the World, led by music teacher Roxanne Tannenbaum. Each student was called up to receive their certificate of completion. Principal Vincent Todisco emceed the event and delivered closing remarks, congratulating all the youngsters on this

Pentangelo announced the names of the top students in each subject area. The final awards, presented by Tim Brower, were given to the top 10 students in the ninth-grade class. As the final presenter for the ceremony, Edmund W. Miles Middle School valedictorian Trevony Palmer, expressed his gratitude for all the faculty and administrators that made his experience in middle school a great one. For the finale, students and audience members enjoyed a commemoratory video montage produced by school librarian Lynn Cesiro.

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently joined with Town Clerk Carol Quirk to recognize a group of town employees who successfully completed the 511NY Rideshare Commuter Challenge, which encourages participants to use alternative methods of transportation when commuting to work. Representatives of 511NY Rideshare, which provides free transportation and ride matching services, hosted a complimentary

lunch at Town Hall in Lindenhurst to thank those who successfully completed the challenge. Deputy Supervisor Martinez and Town Clerk Carol Quirk showed their appreciation for the participants for their role in helping the town continue to “go green” and be more environmentally conscious. In order to complete the Commuter Challenge, those taking part were required to use a new mode of travel to and from work,

whether it be carpooling, walking, biking or public transit, four times in one calendar month.
