Middle School Awaits A Determined Amityville Class Determination, kindness and an ability to adapt to everchanging circumstances is what stands out about this year’s fifth grade class, explained Robyn Santiago, principal of Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District.

“When I visited your classrooms, I saw in-person and remote students interacting with one another while working on a presentation, sharing ideas and learning together,” she said. “You have truly become 21st century learners.”

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strongsmelling spices and herbs.

The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose.

In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) is pleased to announce their 2021 summer theater season. BACCA’s resident theatre company, Modern Classics Theatre Company of Long Island (www.modernclassicstheatrecompanyoflongisland.net), will present DOUBT, A Parable by John Patrick Shanley for six performances at the BACCA Arts Center located at 149 N. Wellwood Ave. in Lindehurst, NY. The production is directed

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that!

The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels.

“We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.”

Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning.

To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other.

Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time to help fulfill their mission, you can! Lastly, donations are always appreciated.

The Center for Science Teaching & Learning’s (CSTL) expanded Dinosaurs! and Animal Adventure exhibit, featuring four new animatronic dinosaurs, is open and welcoming families and groups. New to the exhibit are five animatronic dinosaurs that are located both inside and outside the exhibition hall. New additions include a mother Triceratops and baby, Citipati (CHITT-uh-PUTT-ee) and Parasaurolophus (Pear-uhsore-AWL-oh-fus).

A grand re-opening and expansion ceremony with state and local elected officials, VIPs and business

leaders, was recently held to mark the occasion.

Dinosaurs! And Animal Adventure is the only tourist and educational attraction of its kind on Long Island.

Over the past two years, even during the pandemic, the exhibit has become a very popular family friendly attraction.

“The expansion of the Dinosaurs! and Animal Adventure marks the latest step in our mission to inspire and educate. We are certain that everyone that visits our expanded exhibit will be impressed and enjoy our new dinosaurs. Our exhibit will continue to bring tourists

and economic activity to Rockville Center and Nassau County,” said Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, Executive Director, CSTL. The exhibit focuses on how animals adapt and survive. This is demonstrated through a unique intermixing of dinosaur models and live animals together. It is housed at CSTL’s 35,000 square foot WAC Lighting Hall of Science at its Tanglewood Preserve headquarters located at 1450 Tanglewood Road, in Rockville Centre.

School children and families from the New York region and beyond are expected to

visit this exhibit annually to experience more than 80 unique displays.

As a science and STEM education-focused not-forprofit organization, CSTL is dedicated to providing people of all ages with a place to engage in both formal and informal learning. CSTL also creates signature corporate programs and delivers educational workshops.

A funeral service was celebrated Friday evening at 8:00 pm with the Reverend Sandy Koppmann, Pastor, First United Methodist Church officiating. Friends and family gathered at the funeral home at 11:00 am Saturday, June 26, 2021 for a brief prayer followed by interment in the Amityville Cemetery.

PSEG Long Island Is Prepared For Summer 2021 Continued From 17 2020 and will continue over the next five years.

To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. In 2020, PSEG Long Island removed more than 8,000

hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed 2,400 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 4,000 vine locations across Long

Island and the Rockaways.

PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.
