Mini-Grant Received The Amityville Union Free School District is pleased to announce that Edmund W. Miles Middle School teacher and English chairperson Reinaldo Latorre was the recipient of a 2016 New York State English Council Mini-Grant Award.

To be considered for the $500 mini-grant award, Latorre completed a detailed application

where he explained how the grant money would be spent. The project plan included an essential question, instructional focus, rationale, purpose, Common Core Learning Standards that are addressed, objectives, educational learning activities and assessment.

The Mini-Grant Program is intended to support NYSCE members who

strive to create, explore or enrich instruction in ELA. “We are happy to receive this funding which will enable us to purchase more books for our students, so they can continue to raise their reading levels,” said Latorre.

Latorre will be presented the award at the NYSEC Awards Luncheon held at The Albany Marriott on October 21st.

We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more.

It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling.

Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides.

Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person.

There is something about inclement weather which

affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day.

To everything, and everyone, there is a season.

Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away.

Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

be doing the same. Such is the circle of life.

Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises.

There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon.

So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings.

Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul.

It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it.

During the NE ceremony, the sounds of popular songs such as “Keep Your Head Up,” made famous

This policy may cause the family to pay hundreds of dollars at the time the funeral actually takes place. For instance a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350.00 in 1984 is now $1995.00 Monday thru Friday, $2475.00 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2475.00 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery.

Genevieve was born in Hempstead, New York, on June 26th, 1913 and has resided at Dominican Village since 2009. She is best known for her strong will, participating in many activities and events, her independence, wit and warm personality.

Dominican Village absolutely loved celebrating this milestone Genevieve Muller.

Genevieve was escorted with Genevieve and her into her party which was family. elegantly decorated in

Kathryn Dodd, an English teacher at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District, has been named an Educator of Excellence by the New York State English Council.

“It is amazing to be awarded for something that you love to do,” said Dodd. “Teaching is my

passion and I put my heart and soul into everything that I do as an educator.”

Each year, the NYSEC recognizes excellence in teaching by presenting awards at its annual conference to ELA educators nominated by their schools and then selected by the council.

To be selected for this honor, EWMMS Principal Edward Plaia completed an application on Dodd’s behalf and submitted letters in support of the application written by Plaia, Assistant Principal Kristy Pagliari and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Mary O’Meara.

“I have learned so much from our administrators

and other teachers in the building and I am grateful for every opportunity they have given me, yet, it is my students that deserve the real praise,” said Dodd.

“I have pushed them to work on higher levels than ever before by introducing advanced literature, writing programs and new technology. They constantly impress me and make me proud to be their teacher.”

Dodd will be presented her award at the NYSEC Awards Luncheon held at the Albany Marriott Hotel and Conference Center on October 21st.

who earned the title “Warrior of the Year” by subject area. Additionally, ninth-graders Ashley Pico and Ajani Love were the overall “Warrior of the Year” winners and Brianna Mazzilli earned the Suffolk County Executive

Steven Bellone Certificate of Achievement.

Throughout the ceremonies, students and invited guests were afforded words of wisdom and congratulatory remarks by their fellow classmates and

administrators.

During her address at the EWMMS moving up ceremony, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly shared sage advice passed along by graduating high school seniors and encouraged the students to keep up

“Enjoy the accolades that come with this latest milestone in your lives,” Dr. Kelly said. “Have a wonderful summer and get ready to continue to work hard next year.”

The Town of Babylon recently received a batterypowered drone from an Amityville businessman.

Vinny Samuel - a partner at JVK Operations, which specializes in healthcare laundry services - decided to make the donation after hearing about the fires that recently ravaged homes in downtown Copiague.

Using a remote control, Samuel flew the drone more than one hundred feet up in the air and used his tablet to display the clear, highresolution images from above. Those who were present to witness the demonstration, including Town of Babylon Deputy

Supervisor Tony Martinez, were very impressed.

“The Town of Babylon is grateful for Mr. Samuel’s generous donation,” Deputy Supervisor Martinez said. “This is a tool that can be used to address public safety situations from a bird’s-eye point of view.”

The DJI Phantom drone will only fly over Townowned property. It has a range of three miles and weighs about three pounds.
