External Diploma Program
The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates
for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. On June 12, three Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School students in Amityville enjoyed an afternoon with State Sen. Monica R. Martinez.
Earlier this year, Park Avenue students Sussan Turcios Castro, Danna Flores Cornejo and Emely Espinal were named as winners in Senator Martinez’s Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Essay and Art contest. The contest was held in conjunction with Senator Martinez’s recognition of Black History Month. Participants were tasked with writing an essay or creating a work of art that pays tribute to those who continue to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s
legacy or demonstrates how we can build bridges between all communities. Senator Martinez met
with Park Avenue’s winners to commend them, and she treated them to pizza and drinks.

Funding For The Fourth
Senator Martinez Announces Grants Awarded To S.D. 4 Organizations
New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez announced that $35,000 has been allocated to three community-based programs in the Fourth Senatorial District. The funding secured by Senator Martinez will go to the Amityville Union Free School District, Citizenship Initiative for Change, and the Suffolk County Police Athletic League, Inc. for:
• Amityville UFSD: Awarded $10,000 to enhance their environmental research center for students. This center will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities in environmental science and sustainability.
• Citizenship Initiative for Change: Granted $10,000 to assist minority groups in navigating the citizenship examination process. This initiative
aims to empower individuals by providing resources and support essential for successful citizenship attainment.
• Suffolk County Police Athletic League, Inc.: Received $15,000 to expand mentoring and camp programs. These programs are designed to provide underserved youth with positive role models, educational activities, and recreational opportunities in communities of need.
“I am proud to have had the opportunity to support these initiatives that will provide important services within our community,” said Senator Martinez.
“This funding will help each organization fulfill its mission and improve lives within the Fourth Senatorial District.”
