The scholarship, leadership, service and character of Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students were celebrated during the annual National Honor Society candle-lighting ceremony on June 4th. Forty-eight sophomores, juniors and seniors joined more than 45 present members into the Isabella M. Driscoll Chapter of the National Honor Society. During the ceremony, the society’s executive
board members spoke on the meaning of the four pillars - scholarship, leadership, service and character - that defines membership into the NHS. In addition to possessing these qualities traits, students must have a cumulative average of at least 90 percent. In front of family and friends, members of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig, High School Principal Jeanette
Altruda and NHS coadvisors Rose Ann Fuss and Allison Weller, and high school English teacher and special guest speaker Meredith Coates extended their congratulations to the students on this honor and achievement. “Use your character, scholarship and leadership to serve the world around you,” said Coates. “This is how you make your story memorable. This is how to be a hero on your journey.”
Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to attend the awards presentation at the 26th Annual BACCA Juried Art Show, which was held at the Old Town Hall. The event was widely attended not only by the participating artists, but by the greater community of art enthusiasts as well. It made perfect sense to hold this show in one of the most noteworthy historic buildings in the area, as these artists are building upon our local

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major
artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

“Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek? I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay.

They have to clean this with me; after all, they live here too. They say that they will help me, and they swear to me it’s true. They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its official opening on July 6th. William K. Vanderbilt II - great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad and shipping magnate - died in 1944. His wife Rosamund continued to live in the Vanderbilt Mansion in Centerport until her death in 1947. He realized the potential for his sprawling estate to become a museum for what he called “the use, education and enjoyment of the general public.” That wish prompted him to leave his estate, and a trust fund to finance its operation, to Suffolk County. The county opened the museum to the public on July 6th, 1950. The anniversary coincides with Arcadia

The book is available on the Arcadia Publishing, Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites, in the Vanderbilt Museum Gift Shop and at local bookstores. Today, the Vanderbilt estate and museum are an important part of Long Island history. It is a destination for regional visitors interested in natural history, the life of the oceans, armchair journeys through space, and the history of the privileged life on the Gold Coast from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. The Vanderbilt’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is another magnet for visitors. The museum decided to add a planetarium in the late 1960s. Trustees knew a planetarium would enhance the museum’s ability to carry out the science-education aspect of its mission and to honor Mr. Vanderbilt’s love of science and astronomy, and his interest in celestial navigation. A planetarium also would augment the original Vanderbilt trust fund and help to ensure

On the evening of June 8th, the sun was shining and so was the school spirit of the Amityville community as the Amityville Memorial High School hosted their annual district-wide Pride Day. The celebration kicked off with a performance from the Amityville Memorial High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Brian Carter, as students and their families enjoyed a variety complimentary food and beverages. Fourth-grade teacher and returning Master of Ceremonies Marc Engler provided a few opening
remarks to welcome a field full of students, family, friends, faculty, staff and administration. Students from the Northeast Elementary School led guests in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. They also performed songs of celebration to set the upbeat tone for the remainder of the evening during which students were recognized as Star Awards recipients, commending their achievements in music, art and academics. Celebrating music and dance, the high school step team made a surprise appearance and showcased

Throughout the month of June, Copiague School District physical education departments at the four elementary schools – Deauville Gardens East, Deauville Gardens West, Great Neck Road and Susan E. Wiley – coordinated field day celebrations. During the day’s festivities,
students showcased their various athletic abilities while demonstrating good sportsmanship. Each grade-level wore different colored t-shirts and competed in a variety of physical activities. The field day events required both an individual and team effort. Throughout the day,
students participated in a variety of games including tug o’ war, an egg balancing exercise, a potato sack race and relay races. As students competed in the events, their fellow teammates, along with teachers and parents, cheered them on from the sidelines.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. Not long after Brittney’s passing, a fund was set up by a family friend to help with costs. This community-donated money was not used for that, but made into a scholarship fund to help those scholars who share characteristics similar to Brittney. Celebrity Golf Classic
At its business meeting on June 10th, the Amityville Board of Education recognized 11 staff members who are retiring from the district. Touching words of tribute were shared about the retirees and the Board offered its thanks to the staff members for their years of service and dedication to the students of Amityville. Those recognized were: Annette Brown, elementary teacher at Northeast; Susan Kaminski, elementary teacher at Park Avenue, Linda Lipowski, special education teacher at Northwest; Deborah Schmertzler, special education teacher at Edmund W. Miles Middle School; Sharon Bailey,
teaching assistant at Northeast, Grace La Torre, teaching assistant at Edmund W. Miles Middle School; Mary Gero, school nurse at St. Martins; Marion Johnson, school nurse at Amityville Memorial High School; Pete Crowell, head custodian at Northwest; Pamela Jean-Baptiste, secretary at Northeast; and Judith O’Neill, district clerk. In addition to recognizing retirees, the Board honored those employees with distinguished years of service to the district. The following staff members were honored for 20 years of service: Dave Becker, Geraldine Booth, Deborah Cammaroto, Jane Dady, Reynolds Hawkins, Jolene
Maccarone, Kathleen Thorn and Nora Walker. Employees honored for 25 years of service were Theresa Culotta and Grace La Torre, and those recognized for 30 years of dedication to Amityville were Stephanie Brown, Colleen Kretz and Catherine Wells. Special recognition was also paid to Dr. Mary DeRose, interim principal of Amityville Memorial High School; John Dziedzic, interim plant facilities manager; Sydney Freifelder, interim assistant superintendent for finance and operations; and Dr. Joan Lange, interim assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Dellecave Winners On Sunday, June 7th, the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame recognized the top senior male and female athletes from each high school in Suffolk County at the 15th Annual Dellecave Excellence Brunch. This year, Walter G. O Connell Copiague High School nominated Ihnacinse Grady and Aaron McFadden for the Dellecave Award.
Nominees were chosen on the basis of outstanding athletic ability as well as having displayed exceptional character and integrity. In addition to this honor, each award recipient is provided with a $1,000 scholarship. The Dellecave Awards, named in honor of one of the founding fathers of the Suffolk County Hall of
Fame, are presented by The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. and the Butch Dellecave Foundation, Inc. Birdhouses & Bonding
It was a fun-filled day at Northeast Elementary School on June 5th when fathers and male guardians arrived for a Father’s Day Pre-K celebration. Students in the school’s Pre-K program united with their guardians in the outdoor courtyard for a host of activities. To begin, the toddlers painted
birdhouses using a wide assortment of colors. The students wrote their names on the bottom of the houses, so they could take them home as a keepsake. The preschoolers and their charges also got to play with bubbles set up at bubble stations around the courtyard and engage in hopscotch games. After the
