In recognition of the upcoming presidential election, eighth-grade students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District showcased their knowledge about the 2016 presidential candidates during an election debate.

In preparation for the event, students in their ELA classes created personal narratives and investigative journal

pieces about the current candidates. These writing pieces were displayed in the library during the activity.

For the election debate, students chose to represent Hilary Clinton or Donald Trump and disputed the candidate’s view on modern issues.

Moderated by social studies teacher Paul Duguay, students deliberated on the concerns of gun control, women’s issues,

immigration, healthcare, foreign policy and LGBT rights. The eighth-graders presented for a panel of judges who decided which team of students best defended their candidate’s view on the topic.

While students engaged in debate, their peers worked on Chromebooks in Google Classroom to comment on how well their classmates represented their candidate’s stand on the issue.

Planned Spontaneity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon.

Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category.

Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list.

It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way.

This is where that spontaneity comes into play.

Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed.

Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone?

Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day.

Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

And then came the rains.

Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge.

Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations…

And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

Butterfly Release As part of the thirdgrade science curriculum, students in Marissa Pratt’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District studied the lifecycle of a butterfly.

After watching caterpillars transform into butterflies before their own eyes, the students bid farewell to their new insect friends as they were released into their natural environment.

For the unit, the class received 10 caterpillars to observe as they underwent metamorphosis to become butterflies. Each student kept a Butterfly Journal where they logged their observations and drew pictures to accompany their journal logs.

As a class, the students gathered in a circle on the field behind the school where they released the butterflies into nature.

The third-graders watched in amazement as the butterflies one by one left the habitat and fluttered into the air.

Exceptional Seniors Gathered in the school’s auditorium, students in the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School graduating Class of 2016 were honored for 13 years of hard work at the annual Senior Awards Ceremony on June 9th.

Following a rousing rendition of the national anthem sung by Alexandra Urban, Principal Joseph Agosta afforded welcome remarks and lauded the students for their achievements and drive to success.

“I have the privilege

of working with these students on a daily basis and can share with you that they are a dynamic, passionate and motivated group of unique individuals,” said Agosta. “The awards and scholarships they will receive tonight certainly support their unwavering drive for excellence every day.”

Surrounded by family and friends, as well as members of the board of education, central and high school administration and

teaching staff, more than $66,000 in local, memorial and organizational scholarships were presented to deserving seniors. In addition, students were presented with the Principal’s Recognition Award and the New York State Department of Education Academic Excellence Awards.

Agosta presented the final awards of the evening to the graduating Class of 2016 top 10 EXCEPTIONAL SENIORS - Representatives from SupplyHouse.com with SupplyHouse.com “Drive to Succeed” Scholarship recipients Francisco Burgos, Karla students.
