The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

I Trust You

I received a voicemail from someone this week who is thinking about selling her house. She’s lived in her home for many years and is a little nervous about the thought of leaving it. At the end of her message, she said something that made my day, and prompted me to write this article; she said, “Please give me a call back. I trust you.”

Hearing those three magical words puts this homeowner immediately into my “Friends and Family” book. I never want to lose someone’s trust in me. It is the highest compliment I can receive from someone else, professionally, or personally. Trust is often the difference between winning and losing in business. It takes time to build, but it can be lost in an instant.

There are five simple

ways to build trust every day:

1) Be open and honest. If you are, people will be more likely to trust you.

2) Follow through on your promises. If you say you will do something, make sure you do it.

3) Listen. When you listen, others will feel like they’ve been heard and understood.

4) Be respectful. If you respect people, they

are more likely to trust you.

5) Be consistent. When you are consistent, people will know what to expect from you, and they will be more likely to trust you. As hard as it is to build trust, I have seen people lose it in a second. The easiest and quickest ways to break someone’s trust in you are lying, break your promise, ignore someone, be disrespectful, and be inconsistent. Once you lose trust, it’s almost impossible to get it back. Regardless of the type of business you are in or the role you play in the company, the path to your success will be paved, repeatedly, by three simple words: I Trust You.

On May 18, the Amityville Veterans of Foreign Wars hosted its third annual Patriot’s Pen award ceremony at Edmund W. Miles Middle School.

The Patriot’s Pen is a national essay contest that encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society,

by drafting a 300- to 400word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme was “My pledge to our veterans.”

for Human Resources Dr. Bridgette Waite, Edmund W. Miles Middle School

The evening began with patriotic songs performed by the Amityville pit orchestra, under the direction of Ms. Ferrante. The event was emceed by VFW Vice Commander

and Amityville Board of Education trustee Juan Leon. VFW member and fellow board trustee Dave Heller was also part of the selection committee. Additionally, middle school teacher Patti Dieck was recognized during the ceremony for her dedication to education and veterans’ programs.

The top four winners recited their essays to

the audience, and each were presented with an American flag, a VFW Certificate, a medal and a gift card. Several local elected officials also recognized the students including Amityville Village trustee Kevin Smith, Village Justice Joseph Calabrese; State Sen. Monica Martinez; Town Councilman DuWayne Gregory;

representing Congressman Andrew Garbarino, Wendy Rodriguez, and representing State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, Brendan Cunningham.

The Amityville School District commends all of the students who were recognized at the annual Patriot’s Pen award ceremony.

As a result, Northwest social worker Ms. Lee created a “Twin Group” with the assistance of her social work interns Ms. Jackson and Ms. Galian.

The “Twin Group” focuses on activities to enhance relationship building and celebrating the twins’ unique differences through games and activities. It also gives students a chance to meet other twins, engage in friendly competition, as well as activities to express

The “Twin Group” has created a bonding experience and new opportunities to explore the similarities and differences with their twin and peers.

The Amityville Union Free School District is proud to announce that Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School librarian Timothy Quinn was named as Librarian of the Year.

Mr. Quinn earned this distinction at the Western Suffolk BOCES School Library System’s annual Symposium on May 11. An educator for 19 years, Mr. Quinn has been a library media specialist in the district since 2007. Mr. Quinn is also the district’s School Library Communications Coordinator (liaison) and is a co-chairperson for the district’s curriculum subcommittee, Digital Literacy.

Mr. Quinn views the school library program as a learning experience in which students can inquire and explore with their imaginations to grow creatively and academically. Through the library research sessions, students have access to the school library collection

to read for knowledge and enjoyment, to be innovative in the makerspace, and to learn information literacy. In the STREAM research sessions, all students are engaged in a project-based learning environment where they have the opportunity to apply research skills,

extend their learning with interdisciplinary enrichment instruction, and to work collaboratively with handson and digital lab sessions. The district congratulates Mr. Quinn on earning the distinction of Librarian of the Year.

Edmund W. Miles Middle School French Students Earn Numerous Awards

The French students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in Amityville enjoyed a successful year at the National French Exam (Le Grand Concours), earning two medals and one merit award. Their outstanding language skills were on full display during a celebration with the

American Association of French Teachers in Suffolk County on June 6. The group celebrated the accomplishments of its top students, and Edmund W. Miles eighth graders Darah Policart and Grace Luis were among the exceptional students. Darah earned a gold medal, Grace earned

a bronze medal, and both students received plaques for their impressive accomplishments in French studies.

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Honor Volunteers

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) recently held their annual Adult Recognition Awards at the Inn & Spa at East Wind to celebrate the council volunteers’ tremendous dedication to the organization. During the celebrations, over 1200 awards were issued to volunteers for their devotion and commitment to the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and their mission.

“Without the help of our amazing volunteers, a substantial amount of what we do would not be possible,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It is no secret how important volunteers are in Girl Scouting, whether they are a troop leader or chaperone— they are giving our Girl Scouts the ability to have new experiences. Their continued support and dedication mean the world to us and each of our Girl Scouts.”

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have over 2,500

volunteers filling various roles as troop leaders, cookie managers, fall products managers, chaperones, drivers, and more. Each volunteer serves a crucial role in the Girl Scout troop, and their dedication and commitment inspire girls to be the leaders and changemakers of tomorrow. Troop leaders typically dedicate over 130 hours yearly to their troops, including meetings, camp activities, and events.

Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Promotes Ten Steps For Healthy Aging

It’s never too soon to practice healthy aging; the things we do to keep body and heart healthy— nutritious diet, physical activity, and social connections – also can help promote brain health and wellness. To help individuals be proactive about protecting their brain health, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing these 10 steps for successful aging.

“Lifestyle choices play a vital role in healthy aging and brain health, and it’s never too soon to start,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Eating right, exercising the body and mind, getting proper sleep, and being socially active all contribute to healthy aging and good

brain health, and can potentially reduce the risk of developing a dementiarelated illness.”

AFA offers the following 10 steps for healthy aging:

Eat Well-Adopt a lowfat diet high on fruits and veggies, like strawberries, blueberries, and broccoli. Take daily vitamins. Limit intake of red meats, fried and processed foods, salt, and sugar. In general, foods that are “heart healthy” are also “brain healthy.”

Stay Active-Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and can also help improve mood and overall wellbeing.

Brisk walking benefits brain health, while aerobics can boost your heart rate, and weight training builds strength

and flexibility.

Learn New ThingsChallenge your brain by starting a new hobby like playing tennis, learning to speak a foreign language, trying a cooking class, or something you have not done before. Even something as simple as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand stimulates the brain by forcing it to think outside of its normal routine.

Get Enough SleepGetting a consistent sleep every night is key; at least seven to nine hours is ideal. Having a good sleep environment is also helpful. Insomnia or sleep apnea can have serious physical effects and negatively affect memory and thinking.

Mind Your MedsMedication can affect

everyone differently, especially as you age. When getting a new medication or something you have not taken in a while (whether over the counter or prescription), talk to your doctor or local pharmacist.

Stop Smoking and Limit Alcohol-Smoking can increase the risk of other serious illnesses, while too much alcohol can impair judgment and cause accidents, including falls, broken bones, and car crashes.

Stay ConnectedSocial interaction and maintaining an active social life are very important for brain health, cognitive stimulation and mood. Invite friends and family over for a meal, board games, or just to hang out. Engaging in

your community and participating in group activities is also beneficial.

Know Your Blood Pressure-Blood pressure can impact your cognitive functioning. Visit your physician regularly to check your blood pressure and make sure it is in normal range.

See Your DoctorMaintain checkups. Health screenings are key to managing chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, all of which can impact brain health. Speak with your physician about any concerns or questions you have about your health.

Get a Memory Screening-Our brains need regular checkups, just as other parts of our bodies do. Memory
