Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Park Avenue Students Pen Poems A poetry contest at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District engaged students in creative writing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Children worked on their poems throughout April, which is National Poetry Month, and submitted them in early May for judging. Principal Robyn Santiago announced the winners of the virtual poetry contest in a video that was shared with Park Avenue families. Fourth grade winners were Joshua Law for “New Normal” and Derick Then for “The Best

Northwell Leadership Thanks Front Line Volunteers From Utah

Doctors, nurses and other front line volunteers sent by Utahbased Intermountain Healthcare to bolster the staff at Northwell Health hospitals during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic were thanked by President and CEO Michael Dowling before heading home. The informal gathering took place at the hotel where Intermountain was housed during their twoweek deployment as 36 of the 48 volunteers readied for the return flight West. The Salt Lake City health system answered Northwell’s call for help and on April 14 sent a team that included 28 nurses, six physicians, six advanced care providers, three respiratory therapists, one pharmacist and four support staff.

hardest-hit facilities. Volunteers jumped at the opportunity to contribute, but didn’t know what to expect. They hit the ground running. “Northwell Health showed us all an incredible example of resilience,” said Robert Bunnell, MD, an internal medicine specialist at Intermountain. “We gave these caregivers a break; it was obvious the traumatic and difficult experience they’d been through the previous six weeks had become overwhelming. Explaining The Summer Solstice Each year, people in the Northern Hemisphere eagerly await the arrival of the summer solstice. The solstice was a key cultural event in many ancient communities, but in modern times, it marks an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of summer as well as the longest day of daylight and the shortest hours of night. The summer solstice occurs as a

result of the tilt of Earth’s rotational axis. According to Time and Date, as Earth orbits the sun over the course of each year, its axis always points in the same direction in space. The Northern Hemisphere angles toward the sun for half the year and away for the other half. When the North Pole is nearest to the sun, this is known as the summer

solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the solstices are reversed. The exact day that the solstices occur can vary by a day or two depending on the Earth’s rotation.
