Returning to the 9/11 Park in Amityville, the Amityville Village Farmer’s Market will be back every Saturday until October 14. This annual Village event, sponsored by the Bay Village Civic Association, has been eagerly awaited. Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Local Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2023 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage

Town Of Babylon Proclaims May As Jewish Heritage Month

The Town of Babylon recently issued a proclamation to declare May as Jewish Heritage Month. Deborah Peretz, the Northeast Regional Director of IsraelLINK at StandWithUs, attended the recent Town Board meeting and accepted the proclamation on the organization’s behalf.

“Judaism has such an important role not just across the Town of Babylon but throughout the country and world as well,” said Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta. “It is crucial that we continue to enhance the inclusivity of our diverse community. My wife and her family are Jewish,

and when you witness the amount of antisemitism occurring in the world, you recognize the need for impactful action.”

The recognition of May as Jewish Heritage Month is one step in the Town of Babylon’s plans to enhance the comfortability, safety and celebration of Long Island’s Jewish

population. The Town is also partnering with organizations championing Jewish identity and combating antisemitism, such as StandWithUs. As an international, non-partisan education organization that supports Israel and fights antisemitism, StandWithUs is working with the Town on awareness initiatives.

“As you know, antisemitism is on the rise,” said Deborah Peretz, who leads the educational branch of StandWithUs Northeast. “The best way to ensure our children have a safe future is through education, so thank you to the Town of Babylon for taking this important step.”

“We are proud to have

a significant Jewish population and to partner with Jewish groups on important campaigns, especially combating antisemitism,” said Councilman Manetta. “As public officials, it is our role to make sure everyone knows bigotry is not tolerated and the Jewish community is welcome.”

Art In The Park Fine Art & Craft Fair At Huntington’s Heckscher Park June 3

After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the Art League of Long Island is proud to bring back the Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4. Now in its 53rd year, this juried fair attracts thousands of discerning art lovers looking to purchase unique, one-of-a-kind art and craft to display in their homes or to wear as fashion statements.

More than 80 artists and craftspeople will show and sell original works of art and handmade crafts such as paintings, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, photography, fiber art, wearable art and more. The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF)

is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:

•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems

•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

•Create inclusive spaces through the arts by providing teachers well researched, abundanceframed classroom resources featuring positive representations of all Americans

Benefits Of Leisure Activities

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the

study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

‘Legendary’ Coach Honored At Amityville Memorial High School

On May 8, longtime Amityville Memorial High School track and field coach Reynolds Hawkins was honored for his years of service in coaching and mentoring studentathletes.

The high school’s track was renamed for Mr. Hawkins, who has coached their track and field team for 26 years. Officially named as the Jerry Pollock & Reynolds Hawkins Track, Mr. Hawkins now shares the name of the track with his former coach and lifelong friend, Jerry Pollock. District officials, school administrators, board members, alumnus of Amityville Memorial

High School, and relatives of Mr. Hawkins joined him at the track for a ribboncutting ceremony.

“I’ve truly been blessed throughout the years,” Mr. Hawkins said. “For my name to go up there, that will represent my father’s name, Reynolds Hawkins Sr., myself as Reynolds Hawkins Jr., my son, Reynolds Hawkins III, and my grandson, Reynolds Hawkins IV. They all have the opportunity to see their name up there forever, which is truly a blessing.”

Mr. Hawkins is a member of the Suffolk Coaches Association Hall of Fame. His winter teams

have won several league and county titles, and his spring track teams have earned countless divisional and league titles as well. Additionally, for the winter season, Mr. Hawkins has been named Suffolk County Coach of the Year four times, and he earned this award 10 times for the spring season. He was also named as Newsday’s Coach of the Year twice for his spring track coaching.

“Reynolds Hawkins just sounds like one of those legendary names,” said Amityville Memorial High School alumnus Alijah Benymon. “It didn’t matter whether or not your biological father was

in your life, because for many people like me, he is my second dad.”

As an educator, Mr. Hawkins has worked as a social worker in the Amityville School District for several years. Mr. Hawkins said he was proud to share this honor with Mr. Pollock, who taught in the district for 33 years and has coached track and field for 52 years. Both have coached together since 1990.

“They have been close friends for decades and they are such fine gentlemen,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edward Fale. “What they do for the young people of this

Music Courses

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers.

The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least

one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.
