How Memorial Day And Veterans Day Differ From Each Other

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue

Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start of summer, the weekend should not be celebrated without also pausing to reflect on and recognize the military personnel who lost their lives in defense of freedom and the American way of life.

Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 and recognizes all men and women who have served in the military.

Veterans Day coincides with Remembrance Day, which is a celebrated by the Commonwealth of

Nations, an association of 53 member states with connections to the British Empire. Though Veterans Day and Remembrance Day are each celebrated on November 11, the latter recognizes armed forces members who died in the line of duty, making it more similar to Memorial Day than Veterans Day. It’s not uncommon for people to recognize fallen soldiers on Veterans Day, but many use the holiday to express their appreciation to existing veterans.

However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.”

A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times.

Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed.

They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there.

They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags.

Memorial Day and Veterans Day each honor the military, though the two holidays are not the same. Memorial Day, which is celebrated annually on the last Monday in May, honors the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving in the American military.

Many communities host memorial ceremonies honoring their fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, ensuring such soldiers’ bravery and sacrifices are never forgotten. While many people now view

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals.

We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans.

Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation.

Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times.

They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses.

“The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization.

“I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.”

Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring.

Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans.

They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and

For third grade teacher Victoria McClafferty, Flipgrid has been a valuable tool for math, reader’s workshop and writer’s workshop. Each day she posts a lesson and students respond with a video to showcase the work they have completed. They can tell her what they did or write it down and show her. Some students also do a screen share of their work which she can view on her computer.

Using multiple digital resources, learning continues for students at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Children remain connected with all of their teachers through video chats and other online platforms.

To support online learning, students have been provided with Chromebooks. • After seeing the new 15-star and striped flag flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the poem that would eventually become the nation’s national anthem.

• A sea captain from Massachusetts named William Driver named a large, 10-foot-by-17-foot flag “Old Glory” after it survived multiple defacing attempts during the American Civil War. Driver’s nickname of the flag inspired the name to be used for all American flags.

• Although Flag Day was established as a formal national holiday in 1949,

• Today’s flag features the original 13 alternating white and red stripes (in 1818 another design went into effect permanently setting the number of stripes at 13 in honor of the original colonies) and 50 stars to represent the states of the Union. With traditional end-of-the-year senior milestones impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, students and staff at Amityville Memorial High School are finding alternative ways to honor the Class of 2020.

Senior class officers Jeffrey Reyes-Espinal, Nil Patel, Jordan Tobin and Trinity Tobin, along with adviser Dawn Mizrachi, communicate regularly to discuss ways to make the rest of senior year as fun and memorable as possible despite the

circumstances.

Jeffrey, the class president, created an Instagram page – @amhs.classof2020 – to recognize the seniors’ future plans including commitments to colleges, trade school and the military.

“As officers of the senior class, we were elected to make sure that the hard work from our classmates is celebrated,” he said, noting that more plans are in the works.

On May 8, seniors were invited to the high school’s front lawn to

pick up a personalized sign to place in front of their own homes.

Each sign included the student’s name along with the district logo and “2020 AMITYVILLE MEMORIAL H.S. SENIOR Congratulations” in red and black type. To keep the gathering small, students picked up their signs during specific time blocks. Donning face masks and gloves, several teachers were also on hand to help students find the signs and write personal messages on the
