Telehealth Is Available Through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy Telehealth is a new resource available through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy for anyone that needs therapy and wishes to receive the treatment in the comfort and safety of their own home. Telehealth offers a web based therapy session that is done via a webcam. Phones, tablets, or computers can be used. The sessions are private and the only people that have access to the video call are the patient and the treating therapist.
Telehealth is available for any body part or condition, and is covered by insurance. While we navigate the challenges COVID-19 presents, under most insurances Metro Physical Therapy is able to waive any copayment associated with the treatment. This means sessions are available at no out of pocket cost to the patient in most cases. In the event a copayment can not be waived, a second session in the same week is being
offered for free. This allows a patient to be treated 2x per week for the cost of 1 session. Equipment is available to be dropped off upon therapists discretion, allowing patients to complete meaningful exercises to help progress them further. In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra
essentials - resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers? The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because
they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top
of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl
(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective
at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed
and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all. Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon. With smiling faces, a passion for others and a spirit of giving, these children have made a big impact on their community. Many people are doing all they can to assist those in need and make a difference, but it is always enlightening to see young children doing so on their own! Also, a big thanks to Fred Shores and the entire Babylon Community for their generous donations, and to Anthony Pascarella for his random act of kindness!

Reading Emphasized For Remote Learners Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. From book clubs to personalized instruction, students are
able to continuing their literacy development and gain a love for reading. Teacher Deborah Ross, who runs a popular
afterschool book club for sixth grades, started a virtual book club for all Park Avenue students. Being unable to provide each reader with a copy of the book due to the school closure, Ms. Ross is using Audible, a site with access to audio books. She picked “Alice in Wonderland” as the first selection because it was appropriate for fourth, fifth and sixth graders. Ms. Ross created a book club site on Google
Classroom, which is the platform Amityville students use for their schoolwork. Teachers spread the word about the virtual book club on their announcement boards. The Google Classroom site provides directions on how to access the book and also gives students a place to leave their comments about the story and its different literary elements. Ms. Ross said that sparked great conversations among students.
Reading teacher Christine Pravata continues working with her students digitally to strengthen their literacy skills. She conducts live lessons with students and shares resources from the Wilson reading program through Google Classroom. That allows her to help her students become stronger readers and thinkers by personalizing instruction for every child.

Two COVID-19 Clinical Trials Offer Patients Hope Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19. CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication remdesivir, which was developed to treat the Ebola virus and has been successfully used for other coronaviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The convalescent plasma study is being offered
at CHS’s six hospitals. The remdesivir trial is taking place at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Initial data available from studies using COVID-19 convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or life-threatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a benefit for some patients, leading to improvement. People who recover from COVID-19 do so, in part, because their blood contains antibodies that are able to fight the virus. Prior research of other

The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the virus. “Catholic Health Services is excited to be on the front lines and participate in these clinical trials for COVID-19,” said CHS Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, MS. “Our clinical teams have spent several weeks

It means a great deal to everyone to take part in these two cuttingedge research efforts.” Potential plasma donors must have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptomfree and fully recovered. In addition to being in good health, donors must also be at least 18 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. The plasma can be administered only to a consenting COVID-19 patient or a patient whose family member offers consent. The treatment will be given to those patients judged by a physician to be at high risk of disease progression to severe or life-threatening.
The treatment regimen using remdesivir takes place over 10 days and includes a 200-milligram dose on the first day and a 100-milligram dose on days 2 to 10.
