t was an afternoon of dirt and daffodils for students at Northeast Elementary School in Amityville on April 23rd. In recognition of Earth Day, prekindergarten and kindergarten students got a chance to head outside in the warming sunshine and explore all there is to learn about the earth. In the front of the building, students and faculty dug holes and planted new flowers in the beds facing Albany Avenue.

The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th. The American Heart Association’s 6th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 17th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. More than 700 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of

me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.

Talented students and faculty from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School showcased their various singing, dancing and instrumental abilities during the school’s annual POPS Concert on April 21st. Each year, the high school’s POPS Concert provides students with the opportunity to perform for their peers and

family in a one-of-a-kind showcase that features past and current ‘pop’ music hits. Members of the audience enjoyed the musical talents of the high school’s Madrigals choir, wind ensemble, jazz band, chorus, as well as numerous individual and small group solos from exceptional student performers. Musical choices that

evening included “Wanna be Startin’ Something’ by Michael Jackson, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, John Legend’s “Glory.” To conclude the show, the Madrigals and chorus sang their showstopping rendition of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s timeless duet “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Guest Speaker Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was the guest speaker at the April 21st Membership Meeting of the Bay Village Civic Association. The speaking engagement had been arranged about two months prior at the request of Mr. Bellone’s office. The Suffolk County Executive wanted to reach out to civic associations to further explain his State of the County speech, while answering specific

questions. In his speech, Bellone highlighted three of his goals for the County: • Government Reform • Water Quality • Economic Development During the Q & A session, topics included the LIRR, “Connect L.I.” initiative, public safety, funding for downtown development, as well as a possible change in status for Republic

Amity Honor Society Fifteen students were recently inducted into the Edward Reed Gage Chapter of Amityville’s National Honor Society in a ceremony held in the high school auditorium. Beginning with welcome remarks from honor society advisor Jodi Wilsher and a musical performance from student Lobyre Solages, the evening was presided over by student co-presidents Jacqueline Caballero and Josue Reyes. The induction

featured the traditional candle-lighting ceremony and awards presentations, followed by presentation of honor society senior tassels to be worn at this year’s commencement. Special guest and Eric Hutchison, an artist, writer and computer engineer addressed the audience as well as current and new inductees. Amityville High School boasts 52 members of the National Honor Society after this spring’s induction.

On Friday, April 24th, over 200 volunteers dispersed throughout Babylon to take part in the Town’s campaign to clean roadways and public spaces of litter in a celebration of community pride, collecting 12,290 pounds of garbage (or the weight of a full grown elephant). This anti-litter campaign coordinated by Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Beautification Director Florence Findley and Assistant Deputy County Executive Tim Sini, all of whom were concerned about unsightly refuse appearing in the community. decreases our quality of life and brings down property values but also has a significant negative impact on community morale,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “I was proud to join with so many volunteers, including dozens of Town employees, to help do our part in cleaning unsightly trash from our cherished Town. I strongly encourage all residents to do their part to help reduce litter in our area as we continue to keep Babylon beautiful.” A kick-off breakfast was held at Town Hall in Lindenhurst, where volunteers consisting of Town employees and officials, PSEG employees, students from Deer Park High School and Suffolk Community College, representatives from local 7-11 establishments, and various community organizations were grouped into teams and assigned areas throughout the Town, including along Montauk Highway, Straight Path, New Highway, and Ketcham’s Creek. Following the cleanup, volunteers were treated to a barbeque lunch donated by Outback Steakhouse. All garbage collected was weighed by the Town’s Department of Public Works and at the end of the day, over 12,000 pounds, or 6 tons, of litter was removed from ten sites throughout the Town. The anti-litter campaign is a component of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Program, which organizes numerous initiatives including Adopt-a-Highway, Adopt-a-Spot, and Global Youth Service Day.

Dirt & Daffodils It was an afternoon of dirt and daffodils for students at Northeast Elementary School in Amityville on April 23rd. In recognition of Earth Day, prekindergarten and kindergarten students got a chance to head outside in the warming sunshine and explore all there is to learn about the earth.

In the front of the building students and faculty dug holes and planted new flowers in the beds facing Albany Avenue. In the courtyard, some students built their own kites with paper, string, crayons and creativity, while others overturned large stones to explore the bugs and organisms living beneath. Teachers held out earthworms
