“Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.” ~ Lemony Snicket We all have our routines.

Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course.

A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray.

Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power?

In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes.

One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort.

It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride.

There are miles to go before you sleep.

Board Adopts Budget The Amityville Board of Education adopted its proposed 2017-2018 budget, received an update on capital projects and celebrated the achievements of students and staff at its April 19 meeting.

Three students from the piano lab class at Amityville Memorial High School shared their talents with the board, administrators and the public.

Brian Portillo performed “Musette” by J.S. Bach while John Quinane performed movement I of First Sonatina

by Lynn Freeman Olsen and Trevony Palmer played movements II and III. Edward Plaia, principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School, gave a presentation on the robotics program.

Diane Castonguay, the assistant superintendent for finance and operations, gave her final budget presentation, which included an overview of all spending and revenue. The $88,420,651 budget was then adopted by the board and will be voted on by the public on May 16th.

Tenure Awarded The Amityville Board of Education awarded tenure to 13 staff members at its monthly meeting on April 19th.

Three administrators received tenure including Edward Plaia, principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School; Kristy Pagliari, assistant principal of the middle school; and Sandra Parmentier, assistant administrator for pupil personnel services and special education.

Poetry in Paris The cafeteria at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District was transformed

into a candlelit Parisian café and student-poets showed off their talents during the school’s poetry café on April

25th.

Dressed in their colored berets, students in grades 3-5 celebrated literacy night by

reading both original and published poems of their choice to their families and peers in an open mic format.

Each student received a treat bag filled with a beret, sunglasses and an acrostic poetry book to take home. During

the intermission, guests snacked on cookies and treats served by their teachers.

Copiague Pops It was a night of memorable performances as students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School showcased their vocal skills and dancing abilities at the annual Pops Concert on April 19th in the auditorium.

Kicking off the evening was a performance of “Calling All Hearts” by Stephanie Abreu, Cameren Jackson and the Pops Dancers. The trio of Jamilla Jackson, Halle More and Jelani Bond recreated Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” and the Spice Girls catchy chart-topper “Wannabe” was performed

Spanato. “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas got the audience moving performed by Andrew Szabo, Lesly DeCastro, Kishaar Hodge, Kyree Scott, Jonah Ramdas and Nicholas Favichia.

WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders.

Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend.

It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto.

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women.

In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise.

It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary.

The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues.

Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery.

When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action.

Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings.

In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates.

The sling refers to a piece of material

URINARY INCONTINENCE

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates.

Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable.

Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair.

The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence.

It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency.

The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident.

Medications are often used. The purpose of

the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet.

It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be

tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation.

It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured.

There is no reason to suffer in silence.
