Browsing The Archives Last week marked another mini-milestone in my time here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 450th In Step column. I have to admit, I only realized this a few days ago while randomly perusing the archives, brainstorming for ideas, and I suppose it would stand to reason, seeing as I’m coming upon my 9th anniversary working here… but still, it seems like just yesterday that I tentatively submitted my first column for consideration, as a “trial run” of sorts. The rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward to the present day, as I’m in the process of

putting together a presentation for my alma mater, discussing the path I took to achieve my career aspirations, the ten years that have elapsed since being in the comfortable confines of a classroom, and all that has transpired along the way. Not that I saw it as such a clear-cut path at the time, but I suppose we rarely do when we’re in the midst of the daily madness of responsibilities and obligations and all that fun stuff.

Ten years is a long time, and much has changed in the interim, to be sure; but just as much remains the same. It takes the benefit of perspective to take stock of where you’ve been, where you’re going and, perhaps most importantly,

where you’re at now. We tend to forget that part, so consumed are we by reminiscing over the good ole’ days and looking forward to the next stage.

It’s funny, too, when you look back, to realize that so much is pre-planned for us while still in school, such is the structure of the academic world. But once you graduate, it’s a whole new spectrum of possibilities. It just takes some planning and preparation to maximize that potential and avoid becoming complacent.

There’s no bell schedule to dictate our next move, no breakdown of semesters… just us, on our own, finding our way in the great beyond.

Trees and shrubs that go years without being pruned become overgrown, making it difficult for plants underneath or adjacent to them to grow in healthy. Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly.

Excessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harming the environment at the same time. Water that is not absorbed by the lawn can result in runoff, which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicals in the water itself to run into gutters and eventually pollute streams, rivers and oceans.

In addition, grass needs oxygen in the soil to grow properly. But when a lawn is overwatered, the oxygen between the soil particles is pushed out, depriving roots of the oxygen they need to grow in strong.

This leads to shallow root systems, which make a lawn more susceptible to stress, disease and insect infestation. But overwatering can also be unsightly, as lawns that are overwatered tend to have more weeds, robbing even the greenest of lawns of its aesthetic appeal.

• Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter.

Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem.

• Dust off the mower and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath.

• High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation that keeps new grass robust

QUESTION: In order to remove bacterial plaque from our teeth, we have to see it. How is this accomplished?

ANSWER: This is done with something called a disclosing agent -- usually a red dye that stains bacteria.

You can buy it at any pharmacy. Apply it with a Q-tip (after you brush and floss). Paint the edge of your gum where it meets the teeth. Move the Q-tip along, up and down, following the gum line. Now rinse and look to see where the stain is. Then brush and floss again. You'll notice that although brushing removes some of the stain at the direct edge of the gum, it did not get it all BETWEEN the teeth. Only dental floss will get into these areas to remove bacteria.. Brushing won't.

Do this disclosing daily at first until you really know your mouth, and later three times a week. You really won't know if you've effectively removed plaque if you don't disclose. It's like trying to lose weight without checking yourself on a scale.

Insect Damage Addressing dead spots caused by insect damage can be a little more complicated, and some homeowners may prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle the problem on your own, apply pesticide to the affected areas so the insects behind the problem are killed.

Once the insects are no more, cut the grass, raking the affected area to remove the dead grass and any additional debris. Scatter grass seed over the affected areas and then apply an appropriate fertilizer and water immediately.

Professionals may know just the right fertilizer for your lawn, so even if you want to go it alone, visit a local lawn care center to ask for advice about addressing your particular problem.

Fertilizer Damage Fertilizer damage can also prove difficult to address, as applying fresh seeds too soon can kill any freshly growing seedlings. So grass that has been damaged by overfertilization must first be allowed to fully die.

and promotes faster growth. Lawn aerators can be rented from many garden centers.

• Spread a mixture of topsoil and compost over the top of the lawn. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn and create a good base for the new seed to take root. It will also help strengthen any existing grass and promote longterm health.

• Test a sample of the soil to check the pH. Grass prefers a neutral pH, but some soil tends to lean toward the acidic side, especially if you see the presence of moss.

Knowing the pH will help determine just how much lime per square foot you will need to adjust it accordingly. Liming is a corrective measure and does not need to be used on a healthy, thriving lawn.

• Invest in a spreader to add seed to the lawn. The spreader will have various

settings that enable you to calibrate the rate of seed dispersion depending on your walking speed. Fill the spreader with seed and begin to walk around the lawn. Drop spreaders require you to apply seed in rows with no overlap.

Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage.

• Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water thoroughly. The compost will help keep moisture in while the seeds germinate.

• Aim for lawn watering two to three times per day. The seed should be barely dry between watering. After seeds have germinated and established, you can reduce the frequency of watering but increase the depth of the watering to keep roots strong.

• Avoid foot traffic on a newly seeded lawn until the grass is well established.

Over 500 Long Islanders packed Mulcahy’s Pub and Music Hall in Wantagh to raise over $30,000 for DDI. “It is truly remarkable and heartwarming to see so many people come together to help those challenged with a disability,” stated Jim Cronin, Chairman of

the event and a member of the DDI Foundation Board.

Every few years, members of the Copiague School District Board of Education spend a day traveling throughout the district, visiting selected classrooms and observing lessons covering a broad range of topics during a special Board Day At School.

This year, Board Vice President Brian J. Sales and trustees Doris Fischer, Rosemary Natoli and Everett E. Newman III observed student arrival and dismissal procedures, and hallway passing periods. They also spent approximately 20 minutes immersed in classroom activities with students in grades K-12.

“This day gives us an opportunity to see what is happening within the classrooms and helps us to make decisions going forward,” said

The Edmund W. Miles Middle School 21st Century Community Learning Center program recently closed out the Amityville School District’s celebration of Black History Month with a stellar production entitled A Walk Through Time.

This original school production combines the plot of a timeless holiday classic with significant milestones and influential figures in African American History through the eyes of a wayward young man who struggles in a single-parent household and is regularly disciplined at school for

misbehavior. One day after falling asleep in class, the Spirit Of African American History shows him the errors of his ways by taking him through a historic timeline of people, places and events in black history.

When he wakes up, he realizes his mistakes in time to redeem himself to his family, friends, and teachers.

“The talent is here; you just have to give the students a chance to show it. The 21st Century Program does just that!” said 21st Century program drama teacher Gerald Asbell, who wrote, directed
