Dear Chamber of Commerce Members and Residents of Amityville, During this most difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the residents and businesses of our community. Local businesses have closed; employees have been laid off or let go; and restaurants are open only for take-out. At this time, there is no way to estimate the economic loss to our residents and merchants, but we have a good idea where it is headed.

Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out.

It was a countdown to his 1,000th career point as a member of the varsity squad, and the number on the sign read “01.” Myles sank his shot and cemented his placed in Warriors history.

Myles entered the Suffolk County overall title game against Brentwood 17 points short of the milestone and finished the game with 19. As a junior, he will have another full year to keep adding to his already impressive points total.

“It felt good, but it felt better after because in the

moment, I was focused on the winning the game,” he said. Amityville, the Suffolk Class A champion, defeated Class B champion Brentwood, 80-72.

He started playing basketball when he was 5 years old and joined his first organized league a few years later, playing with the CYO at St. Martin of Tour Church. In eighth grade, Myles was on the middle school basketball team and was elevated to varsity as a freshman.

Myles credits his success to a strong work ethic, as well as the support of his family, friends, coaches and teammates. He explained that he constantly strives for improvement and that keeps him focused during practices. When watching basketball on television, he is studying the game. After

high school, Myles hopes to play at the collegiate level for a Division I school, and has aspirations of making it to the pros.

More important than his individual point total is the success of the team, he said.

Myles was a member of the 2018 Warriors that won the state basketball title, and he hopes to bring the trophy back to Amityville before he graduates.

“Myles is an incredible student-athlete,” said Evan Farkas, director of athletics, physical education and health. “He’s a hard worker and he’s a leader not only on the court but in school. He’s a role model for our other athletes. We congratulate Myles on his 1,000th point as he did it in one of the biggest moments of his career.”

Catholic Health Services Offers Tips to Reduce COVID-19 Anxiety As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety.

Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty.

This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media.

“The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become

overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.”

Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations.

However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions.

Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important.

Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance.

To reduce coronavirusrelated anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus.

This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing.

For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including Telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for emergency department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours.

The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

general classrooms, science labs, an expanded cafeteria and indoor athletic complex, and will allow the high school to house ninth graders.

The existing gymnasium will be transformed into a music and art suite, expected to be completed

by Jan. 1, 2021.

Also ongoing is the addition at Northwest Elementary School, which will house kindergarten, first and second grades next year. The new wing will include kindergarten classrooms and a small gymnasium. The mild winter has allowed work to steadily progress and construction is more than halfway complete.

It will be ready for the start of the 2020-21 school year. Additionally at Northwest, a new hot water heater was installed to service the entire building.

With kindergarten moving to Northwest, a full-day pre-K program will be launched at Northeast Elementary School. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly reported that more than 130 students are already registered and another in-person registration session will be held in the spring.

Cast members from the high school’s production of “Once On This Island” performed a musical number from the show.

Denise Graham, who coordinated the Historically Black College and Universities tour over the February break, gave a report on trip which included visits to six colleges in three states.

She said that 31 students from the high school attended along with three chaperones.

WORKING TOGETHER DURING LITERACY NIGHT - On March 11, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District held its literacy night for grades 3-5. Centered on the theme of cooperation, 50 students volunteered to perform a reader’s theater of social worker Lysa Mullady’s book “Red Yellow Blue.” Attendees went back to their classrooms to participate in a cooperative art project.
