To culminate their unit of study, each student was responsible for researching the life of an important figure in African-American history and presenting their findings to their classmates. Students
LIHSA Open House
worked for three weeks putting their reports together, with a few students getting in character and dressing up as their historical figure.
The top ranked, Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) will host an Open House on Saturday, April 5th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset. This is an opportunity for students looking to pursue future careers in the arts to check out one of Long Island’s top rated Arts Schools., where 98 percent of graduates move on to higher education, conservatories or to work directly in their chosen field. During the LIHSA open house you can sample some of the professionallevel classes that are taught by recognized artists and experienced master teachers. Sketch from a live model, sit in on a jazz jam or take a dance class. Join the theatre ‘techies’ in creating special effects, participate in an improv class, join in a film shoot on location, watch a student performance, take an art class and then be dazzled by the artwork on display in the student art gallery. “The LIHSA family looks
forward to meeting you at the open house, come to hear about our outstanding half and full-day high school programs and the Summer Arts Academy for students entering grades 6-12,” says interim LIHSA Principal Dr. Frank Banta. Explore the school’s theatre, art and dance studios, “high tech” Digital Music and Media Production Lab and rehearsal rooms. Tour the entire state-of-the-art facility and talk with staff, professional artists, alumni and parents of students. LIHSA students receive professionallevel training in art, dance, theatre, technical theatre, instrumental or vocal music, film, playwriting or Digital Media Production each day as a supplement to their regular courses of study. The school’s alumni have landed starring roles on Broadway and in national touring companies. They also can be found working as technicians for Cirque de Soleil and at Lincoln Center. Last
year’s 68 graduates earned more than $5.5 million in scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories. For details on the open house call 516.622.5678 or visit www.lihsarts.org and like us on Facebook www. facebook.com/LIHSArts. Long Island High School for the Arts has been offering intensive training in the visual and performing arts for more than 40 years. Students from both Nassau and Suffolk counties can attend either for half the school day, taking academic courses at their home high schools, or can enroll full time and take all of their academic courses for high school graduation at LIHSA. LIHSA graduates go on to colleges or conservatories, including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (just to name a few).

In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel
that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most
brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

Singer, musician and actor Dominic Chinese, best known for his portrayal of Uncle Junior on HBO’s smash TV series The Sopranos, recently thrilled patients and residents at the Broadlawn Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center when he stopped by to visit and put on a show. Mr. Chianese’s great tenor voice awed the crowd with standard American and Italian favorites, evoking memories, tears and overwhelming applause from the audience. “I must admit, I am a big fan,” said Gerard Kaiser, vice president of senior services, at Broadlawn Manor. “The opportunity to meet Mr. Chianese in person was something I

College Open House provide details about the grants and loans process, as well as the many academic scholarships available at Suffolk. Veterans should note that campus representatives will be available to provide educational and transitional services information. The Open House program at each campus will be important for recently-accepted students as well, and provide an opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid. “Suffolk County Community College has always been an exciting place to be,” said College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, “and we are undergoing exciting changes, including the building or opening of
new buildings on all three of our campuses.” “Prospective Suffolk County Community College students and those accepted will discover that making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment Management. “We look forward to having students and their families joining us to learn about our academic programs and student support services,” Braxton said, adding “they will also have the opportunity to tour the campus with student guides who will answer questions based upon their experiences as active students. Attending open house and applying early is the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College,”

listening to speakers, such as Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI; Dr. Hubert Keen, President of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Henry Sikorski, Chief Development Officer, Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lorraine Greenwald, Dean of International Education and Programs, Farmingdale State College; and Gordon Canary, District Office Manager, New York State Senator Phil Boyle’s office. When Mr. Lopez approached the podium, he expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and explained
his passion for engineering and business, which led him to double major in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, in honor of Fred Breithut, Founder of SBPLI, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who has participated in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics programs and meets the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The student receives $1,000
for each semester he/ she attends the college (maximum of eight semesters). Mr. Breithut sadly passed away in 2010, and it has become even more important for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to his love and admiration for students. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. “We are thrilled to award this scholarship to Adam Lopez,” says Ms. Madarash. “He has dedicated a great deal of his time to SBPLI programs and has learned so much. We are confident that he will succeed throughout his four-years at Farmingdale State College. Each year, we hope to change a student’s life with the Fred Breithut Scholarship.” For more information, please visit www.spbli.org.
APPEARANCE OF FRONT TEETH
QUESTION: I'd like to improve the appearance of my front teeth because they are chipped, stained and have oldlooking fillings. Any suggestions? ANSWER: Your front teeth are the first thing people see when you talk or smile. You want them to look as attractive as possible. If the teeth are in good alignment and your gums are healthy, your dentist may suggest two alternatives for capping the teeth in which porcelain will be used. One is veneer bonding; the other is porcelain-fusedto-metal crowns.
Both have advantages, but your dentist's recommendation will depend on the condition of your teeth. Capping your front teeth with porcelain-fusedto-metal has the advantage of strength as well as pleasing appearance. Veneer bonding will give your teeth a natural look, will cover old stained fillings, but will not be as long lasting. It consumes less chair time, so will be more affordable. From the office of

in this National Heritage Area. The Network’s Awards for Excellence program seeks to recognize and commend exceptional efforts among GHHN members. Awards are made to projects that exemplify creativity and professional vision resulting in a contribution to the preservation and interpretation of the historic scene, material culture and diversity of the region. The book ‘Murder on Long Island’ documents the infamous murders of Mr. and Mrs. James Wickham of Cutchogue, Long Island. In 1854, James Wickham got into an argument with one of his workers, Nicholas Behan, after Behan harassed another employee who refused to marry him. Several days after Behan’s dismissal, he crept back into the house in the dead of night. With an axe, he butchered Wickham and his wife, Frances, and fled to a nearby swamp. Behan was captured, tried, convicted and, on December 15th, 1854 became one of the last people to be hanged in Suffolk County. This legislation now moves to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for his signature. Suffolk County Veterans can contact the Parks Department at 631.854.4949 or go to Suffolk County Park locations where green keys are sold with proper proof of residency; veterans must submit DD Form 214 (Certificate of release or Discharge from Active Duty) or Suffolk County Veteran Resident ID card issued by Suffolk County Veterans Agency. The Suffolk County Legislature has unanimously approved legislation to make discounted golf fees for veterans and active military personnel permanent. This resolution, sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), expands the pilot program which was set to expire on March 11th, 2014. In 2012, Legislator Schneiderman introduced legislation which established a pilot program to charge military veterans golfing fees equivalent to those paid by senior citizens. Since the implementation of this fee structure approximately 1,000 veterans or active military personnel have played a round of golf at Suffolk County courses. “Members of the military serve to protect the freedoms of this country,” says Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman. “This is one small way we can show our appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces.” “I support Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman’s legislation authorizing reduced fees for our veterans at county golf courses,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The pilot program was a great success and many of our veterans took advantage of the reduced fees. ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t
exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www.annualcreditreport. com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

important historical female figures such as Clara Barton, Amelia Earhart, Helen Keller, Harriet Tubman and Eleanor Roosevelt. “In order to understand how these women made such wonderful contributions to our society, we first need to understand how people thought 100 years ago,” said presenter Lluana
Jones. During the presentation, Ms. Jones adopted the persona of a time traveler and, through the use of costumes and props, transformed herself into historical female figures. Using student volunteers, Ms. Jones showcased different social injustices women faced throughout the years, including inequity in pay.
also commemorative presentations on famous Black heroes such as Jackie Robinson, the Greensboro Four, and entertainers such as Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday. One student even created a Black History Monopoly game that covered important dates and events in the civil rights movement. Denise Ferencik’s art students created a display of colorful Adinkra cloths, replicating traditional garb that originated in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The cloths bear traditional Akan symbols for proverbs, maxims and attitudes that carry a spiritual meaning. Ms. Ferencik also displayed symbols used by slaves on
the Underground Railroad. Choral teacher Carl Ferrara also took students on a trip on the Underground Railroad by sharing historical facts and leading the EWMMS chorus in a series of musical performances, including songs that were popular among slaves. The group culminated with James Weldon Johnson and John Rosamond Johnson’s Lift Every Voice and Sing. Classrooms and the school’s library also hosted interesting activities that made the school’s Black History Month recognition more of an experience than a unit of study.

The Need To Develop A Retirement Plan
NATIONAL WINNER - Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School senior Lindsay Griffiths has been named a winner in the 2014 National Achievement Program. The National Achievement Scholarship Program exists specifically to honor academically talented Black Americans and is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Her award is being underwritten by NMSC and provides a single payment of $2,500.
(NAPSI)—Preparing for retirement can be a challenging process— and emerging trends are not helping matters. Fortunately, developing a retirement plan can help. That’s the word from experts who say changes in employee benefits, longer life spans, uncertainty with Social Security and Medicare and the rising cost of health care have made funding retirement more difficult. With most of the responsibilities for financial aspects of
retirement now falling squarely on the shoulders of individuals, the key, according to Insured Retirement Institute President and CEO Cathy Weatherford, is to have a comprehensive plan that addresses both retirement income and expensesincluding health care. National Retirement Planning Week was created to remind consumers of the importance of having a plan for funding their retirement. For those needing help, a professional financial
advisor can assist when creating a road map toward attaining financial security. To learn more, visit www.retireonyourterms. org.
Substance Abuse (NAPSA)-The more you know about substance abuse, the better you can prevent problems. You don’t have to deal with addiction alone. Learn more at drugabuse.gov.

A home Care Professional can coordinate a patient’s plan of care under the direction of his or her doctor. A wide range of treatments and procedures that were once performed in a hospital can now be delivered at home. Trained clinicians teach individuals and their families self-management for chronic conditions or help with recovery from an illness or injury. Supportive services from a home care company such as Interim HealthCare can help with bathing, preparing meals, shopping, companionship, transportation and limited light housework. The company is one of the leading home care and medical staffing companies in the country. Employing more than 75,000 health care workers and providing services to approximately 50,000 people, the company also offers an evaluation test to identify factors that may place someone at risk (www. independentlivingassessment.com).

the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities. It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving. Caregivers may not have the time for regular checkups, may not fill a prescription due to cost, miss sleep or forget to eat healthy meals. It’s very important for caregivers to recognize their own limits. Here are a few tips to help: • Find out about caregiving resources in your community. • Don’t do it alone. Ask for and accept help. Ask family members to do their share. • Simplify your life and reduce other sources of stress. Make “to do” lists. • Stay in touch with family and friends. • Join a support group. • Make time to get away and have fun. • Consider home care supportive services.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. DD

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your

Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint. Paint a statement wall that draws attention away from the size of your space and toward something beautiful and vibrant. Bright or bold colors work well, as the wall can appear to recede, creating the illusion of space. Go big with lighter and softer colors. In areas beyond the feature wall, use lighter and softer colors to make the space seem larger. Light blues and greens add significant light subtly to a room.
Coordinate your colors. Stretch your space and maximize impact by using color to coordinate your rooms and decor. HGTV® HOME by SherwinWilliams offers precoordinated collections of color, paint and wallpaper. The color palettes can be used to ensure that your walls, furniture and accessories help create a cohesive look.

washing your linens and cleaning air ducts can go a long way toward reducing the amount of allergens in the air. Dealing With Dust (NAPSI)—The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology has some advice for the millions of Americans for whom “allergy season” never ends: Reducing the dust in your home can make a big difference. Most indoor environments, it says, actually trap airborne allergens, where they can pose a risk to respiratory health. If you suspect indoor allergies are causing your symptoms, see your doctor. You can limit your exposure. Tiny Particles=Big Problem House dust is present in even the cleanest homes. It’s stirred up whenever you vacuum, walk on a carpet or make the bed. In addition, forced-air heating systems tend to blow dust into the air. A Solution Fortunately, frequently

(NAPSI)—For many, the answer to a financial dilemma can come from asking the right questions. To help, a public interest organization has come up with four quarterly booklets, with worksheets and selfassessment information, for those considering personal loans. • Is a personal loan for me? • Can I afford a loan? • What happens when I apply? • What happens if I’m late with a payment? • What terms should I understand before taking out a loan? • Which laws protect me?
