Alexander J. Walter, Jr., a resident of Amityville, LI., died March 7, 2020 at Hospice Inn Melville, LI. He was 72 years old. Mr. Walter was born on June 29, 1947 in Maspeth, Queens to Alexander J. and Juliette (Minervini) Walter. He served his country with distinction, during the Viet Nam campaign, in the United States Marine corp., where he received several medals for his service. Alex was self employed in the telecommunications field as a consultant. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, his daughter, Stephanie Albanese (Christopher), his grandchildren; Gabriel, Chelsea and Samantha Albanese, and his brother Douglas Walter (Joan). A prayer and VFW services were held at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 10th in the evening. The Reverend Gerard Gordon, pastor, St. Martin of Tours R.C. Book Lovers Of All Ages Celebrate Literature Kindergartners love their books at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, so it was quite a treat for them to be visited by guest readers throughout Love a Book Week from March 2-6. Librarian Tina Smith said she planned Love a Book Week to coincide with Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. Special guests stopped by classrooms all week to read to students including board of education trustees, administrators, community members and students from the National Junior Honor Society chapter at Edmund

W. Miles Middle School. Before the Honor Society members read to pre-K and kindergarten students, they took part in a short workshop with Ms. Smith to learn how to read to children. Strategies they learned included how to introduce the author and illustrator, when to stop and ask questions, and how to reflect on the story after reading. She said that these techniques help children make stronger connections to a book and improve their reading comprehension. “I love that members of the Amityville community wanted to be here,” Ms. Smith said. “You don’t have

to be a teacher to read to children. Everybody has something to offer when they’re reading.” Ninth grader Wilnory Bouzy said that the children were very respectful while she was reading and asked very good questions. She talked with the youngsters about different story elements including the main idea and setting. Ashlyn Rodriguez, who read the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh the Thinks You Can Think,” said she had a fun time interacting with the youngsters. “They were so in love with learning,” she said.

Amityville Pair Earn Statewide Honors

Amityville Memorial High School’s DECA team attended the 2020 State Career Conference, Feb. 26-28 in Rochester and two students earned high marks in their events. The Distributive Education Clubs of America is a youth organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in business management and administration, finance,

She is also secretary of Amityville’s chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America and earned a top 10 finish in the Principles of Hospitality and Tourism category at DECA’s recent state conference. A member of the science research program, Amelia presented at the high school’s first science research symposium last year on her study, “The Effect of Antidepressants on Bipolar Disorder.” Outside of school, she volunteers with the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. The pair have made the most of the academic opportunities offered at the high school by taking rigorous and challenging courses. Marco has enrolled in nine Advanced Placement courses and Amelia has taken 11. They explained that the classes

He added that he couldn’t have done it without support from his family, friends, teachers and principals. “It feels great,” he said of garnering the top rank in the class. “There were a lot of eligible candidates for this title, and I’m humbled to have earned

this.” Amelia, an Amityville student since pre-K, attributes her achievement to hard work, remaining positive and having a great support system. She said that graduation, scheduled for June 25 on the football field, will be an important milestone for herself and all her classmates. “It’s exciting,” she said. “The hard work paid off. It’s rewarding to know that we finally got here.”
