Dressed in a rainbow of colors, the kindergarten classes at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District highlighted the importance of honesty during their monthly character education assembly on February 15th.

Each month, the school chooses one character education trait to recognize. As a culminating activity, the students presented their

“Honesty Is Beautiful” assembly featuring each kindergarten class reciting poems about honesty.

To recognize the importance of honesty, teachers use character education books and lessons for each grade level. Students who are caught showing off their good character trait receive a character counts card. In March, Deauville Gardens East will highlight courage.

Diversity was celebrated at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District during the Black History Month program on February 17th.

Students in pre-K and kindergarten created selfportraits, which served as the backdrop for a performance that drew a large crowd of parents

and family members. In the week leading up to the celebration, each child wrote about why he or she is special and unique, and participated in a schoolwide read aloud.

The program opened with a welcoming song from West Africa, “Funga Alafia.” A kindergarten singalong was followed by a musical production, “The

Crayon Box That Talked.”

Each class dressed in a different color, turning the center of the gymnasium into a large rainbow.

The message of the show was: “We are like a box of crayons. Every one of us is unique. And when we get together, our classroom is complete.”

And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood.

How is this possible??

At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map.

It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again.

That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble.

Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment.

Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route.

Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never.

Not once.

Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there
