The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season
for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. The third annual family math night at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on Jan. 22 drew and enthusiastic crowd of children and adults who were hungry for knowledge. Fortunately for them, one of the centers included a snack. Upon solving a puzzle, students used the answer to create a cereal treat. That was one of several fun and engaging
math activities that Park Avenue students and their parents, grandparents and siblings enjoyed throughout the night. The art room was transformed into an escape room, with students solving equations to move from clue to clue and ultimately “break out.” In the library, they answered math questions on Chromebooks using the interactive game Kahoot. Another room featured math jeopardy that focused
on five areas: addition, subtraction, money, shapes and word problems. Family math night featured a Looney Tunes theme, with the characters incorporated into the different activities. Principal Robyn Santiago said the theme was continued from Park Avenue’s float in the most recent Homecoming parade.
Amityville Researchers Share Their Findings Amityville Memorial High School sophomores are conducting meaningful research in the Advanced Placement Seminar course where they delve deep into topics of personal interest. On Jan. 31, students presented their group reports in the auditorium, the result of two months of hard work. Students in Allison Reichel’s and Jodi Wilsher’s classes began the year learning fundamental research skills, such as how to find credible information, consider issues from multiple perspectives, evaluate the strength of arguments and work as a part of a team. Working in groups of three to five, students then
picked research topics with each member responsible for a different component. Yaneli Amaya, Keiry Martinez, Juan Morales and Kemar Porche selected as their topic, “Wealthy Inequality.” Individually, each one looking at it from a different perspective: political, social and futuristic perspective. They then brought their information together to create a group research report and digital presentation. “It takes a lot of commitment and everyone doing their part,” Yaneli said about what it takes to successfully complete a research project. Other topics included “Public Perception of
Cloning,” “The Impact of Music,” “Climate Change,” “Advertising to Children,” “Social Policies of Immigration” and “Educational Technology.” With the conclusion of the group presentations, AP Seminar students will now begin individual research projects. Students who successfully complete AP Seminar can take AP Research, the second part of the AP Capstone program, which includes a full-year investigation of a self-chosen research question. Each student’s individual research project culminates with a 4,000- to 5,000-word paper and oral defense presentation.
