Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are invited to visit the same host families year after year. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child this summer, please contact Jacqueline Shapiro at 516.692.8662 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www.freshair.org.

QUESTION: Are there any new advances in filling material? ANSWER: For many years dentists were limited in their selection of filling materials to gold, silver amalgam alloys or various tooth colored materials that left room for improvement. This challenge for improvement has led dental researchers to develop new products including glass ionomers which showed excellent biocompatibility, good adherence to tooth structure, good marginal sealing, and thermal expansion quite like natural teeth. Glass ionomers were capable of extended fluoride release to reduce tooth decay and demonstrated shades and translucency very close to natural teeth. Recent technology has combined these glass ionomers with other materials to make even better materials. They are known as "compomers." Compomers are hardened by a special light and exhibit excellent esthetic, durability and manipulative properties that were hard to achieve with conventional glass ionomers. From the office of

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone sends congratulations to local athletes who are participating in the XXII Olympic Winter Games. Among the estimated 2,500 athletes competing in the games in Sochi, Russia are: lugers Aidan Kelly of West Islip and Matt Mortensen of Huntington Station and skeleton slider John Daly of Smithtown. “We are proud to have such a strong contingent of Suffolk County residents who will represent their country on such an international stage,” Bellone said. “They have all worked hard to get where they are and deserve a great deal of credit for their achievements. We will all be rooting for them throughout the Olympics.” The Games, which open Friday in Sochi, Russia, run for two weeks.

Nursing Home Artists Honored Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2014 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of approximately 280 NYSHFA/NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit artwork. Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York.

Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 50 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 52 to 93, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.”

What Dreams May Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Do you dream? Better yet, do you remember these abstract visions once you awaken? Do they make any sense, or are they simply random collections of people in mystery places, moving wordlessly through your subconscious with no clear direction or purpose? I once took a class on the Philosophy of Dreams in college, where the sole objective was to keep a dream book and analyze its contents week-to-week, drawing conclusions from whatever images may have manifest themselves overnight.

To say there were many interesting – disturbing, even – discussions would be an understatement. And those were just the dreams my fellow students recalled! A dream is a wish your heart makes, or so the saying goes – but what of nightmares and other less desirable visions? What do they mean? Should any conclusions be drawn, or are they simply beyond the scope of human comprehension? And what of the dreams that fall into oblivion, never to be revisited again? I often find myself falling into and out of various

states of sleep, tossing and turning from one bizarre dream to the next, vaguely aware of the people and places surrounding me, but rarely discerning any viable plot from the whole scenario. The thing is, I rarely recall these visions by the time the new day dawns. There and gone, perhaps to be revisited at a later date. Or not. It’s a fairly exciting concept, when you stop and think of the mysterious majesty of it all – the subconscious, delving into the unconscious, and back again. Too deep? Brain on overload? Maybe it’s time for a little nap!

To kick off its Parents as Reading Partners program, Copiague’s Great Neck Road Elementary School hosted its annual Family Literacy Night. Parents and students in kindergarten through fifth grade rotated through three stations during the event, which culminated in a PTA-sponsored assembly program. In reference to its participation as a bucketfilling school, which focuses on kindness and good behaviors, Great Neck Road’s PARP theme this year is “Books

Fill Our Buckets with Knowledge.” During the evening, attendees enjoyed dinner and a free book distribution. They also took part in an arts-andcrafts activity and book read-aloud in both English and Spanish. The assembly program, Petra Puppets Reading Rampage, was a curriculum-based exploration of literacy that allowed and encouraged student participation. Through puppets, illusions, and original songs and music, ventriloquist Steve Petruzzella taught

students that reading can be fun because it allows them to learn about science, history and many other things. Taking place concurrently, members of the Great Neck Road contingent of the district’s TAG program collected toiletries as part of the Ashoka Youth Venture Project. The students are working with Project Hope and will donate the toiletries to Resurrection House, a local homeless shelter.

Deauville Gardens East School elementary students in the Copiague School District learned a few tricks when the National Circus Project hosted a weeklong workshop. During the PTAsponsored event, students learned skills such as

juggling, balancing, acrobatics, plate spinning and walking on stilts. The lessons culminated in a Friday evening performance by the fifthgraders showcasing their new skills. To prepare for the event, physical education teachers Wendy Hrzich, Barbara Olsen and

John Sack taught their annual circus unit the week prior. “The Circus Project gives the students an opportunity to try things they may never get the chance to do again,” said Mrs. Hrzich.

Notice Of The General Assembly DEAR MEMBERS, BOARD OF POLONIA OF LONG ISLAND CORDIALLY INVITES YOU TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE YEAR 2013

Within 10 minutes, Capt. Trafford in his 24-foot Sea Tow boat arrived at the inlet. It was a bright, sunny and gusty day with winds blowing steadily from the southwest at 20 knots with higher gusts. Short-period 6- to 12-foot waves were battering the sandbar. As Trafford approached the bar, he expertly read the conditions, determined he could make it through the surf zone, and circled ocean-side and east of the bar to where the Pauline IV had capsized and was bottom-side-up, leaving a debris field. Remaining in deep water, Trafford searched the east side of the bar. He patiently scanned the debris field but did not locate survivors. A Suffolk County Police helicopter arrived on scene and commenced a search. While near the debris field, the helicopter crew located a person clinging to a lobster buoy one mile offshore to the east of the bar, and directed Capt. Trafford to the location for pickup. Demonstrating expert boat handling skills, determination and focus, Trafford quickly clipped a life ring to his towline, then maneuvered his boat to within 10 feet of the conscious deckhand and quickly pulled him on to his boat. Remaining focused, Trafford verified there were only two persons aboard the Pauline, and learned the boat’s captain never came out of the cabin when it was caught by a large following sea and immediately capsized. Trafford and the deckhand continued to search for the Pauline’s captain, but finished their

efforts when relieved by the Coast Guard. Sadly, the captain’s body later was recovered. Trafford returned the deckhand to shore and delivered him to a waiting ambulance. Capt. Trafford’s actions that day led directly to saving the deckhand’s life. “We’re proud of Capt. Trafford’s heroic lifesaving efforts last May and are delighted that he has received national recognition by receiving

the AFRAS Life Saving Award,” said Capt. Joseph Frohnhoefer, CEO and Founder of Sea Tow Services International, Inc., the nation’s leading on-water assistance provider to boaters. “His dedication is an inspiration to all of us at Sea Tow, and serves as one more example of how the skills and professionalism of all our Captains are helping to make boating safer and more enjoyable for all.”

Sea Tow Services International, the nation’s leading marine assistance organization, is proud to announce that Captain Les Trafford, owner of Sea Tow Shinnecock/Moriches in New York, was presented with a distinguished Life Saving Award from C-PORT (Conference of Professional Operators for Response Towing) and AFRAS (Association For Rescue At Sea) during the 27th C-PORT Conference. The national conference was held January 12th14th, 2014 in Clearwater Beach, Fla. Each year, AFRAS recognizes a deserving member of C-PORT who has shown exceptional skill and determination to save lives during a rescue incident in the maritime environment. Capt. Trafford was recognized for his actions on the afternoon of May 12, 2013, when he was notified that a 45-foot trawler, the Pauline IV, had capsized on a sandbar in treacherous Shinnecock Inlet in Long Island, New York, with two persons aboard.

Just A Cup Of Coffee By: Bob Sinclair

After the loss of someone very close, those around us are caring and concerned, making every effort to shield us from the hurt, and try to lessen our heartbreak. But at times, it just takes a quiet moment with a special someone or discovering something, anything, offering comfort or some relief from the grief, loneliness and unbearable ache. The “something” could be as simple as the warmth of an old, somewhat worn and familiar cup filled with hot and inviting morning coffee.

AMITYVILLE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2014 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

It appears as though each sip relieves some of the pain, even sharing the anguish while stirring emotions which, not surprisingly, leave you feeling a little drained and empty. It is not unusual to hold on and not let go just yet; it is okay to cradle the cup to your heart, cherishing your time together, and embracing some touching personal moments.

“Roll Out The Barrels” Photo by: Mike Missano, North Babylon

Adding a bit of sugar is a little reminder to reflect on those sweet times you shared in your life together, understanding that right now nothing seems quite right, nor appears to make any sense. As you stir your coffee, inhale the aroma and savor your memories, knowing the cup will soon be empty; and although there will always be an empty place in your heart, the images of the life you shared will gradually replace the sorrow. Listen to a sort of musical reminder as the spoon circles and brushes against the sides of the cup, and you will never forget that you will always cherish and embrace your old memories, while knowing the cup may empty today, but will fill with new memories each tomorrow. For now, just wake each morning with the thought “good morning sweetheart….let’s have a nice cup of coffee.” It’s OK! On Janary 28th, “Ben” Gambella received a competitive nomination from Senator Charles Schumer to “King’s Point.” This South Shore resident was choosen from a large pool of applicants from New York State. Ben has been a resident of Amityville for almost his entire life. At six months old he moved from Manhattan to his bay front home. His mother, Kitty Gambella quickly enrolled him in swimming lessons. His father Rick Gambella boasts,”he could swim before he could walk and drive a boat before he could ride a bicycle.” Ben lives, works, plays and volunteers on the water. In the summer he is employed as a lifeguard for the Town of Babylon. At the same time he has also managed to keep his two entrepreneureal businesses ‘afloat’. Ben sells pizza by boat to boater and has a boat washing businesses. You may have seen him

out and about taking his 13’ Boston Whaler Sport to “Coast Guard Cove” to surf. Ben bought this boat from Marine Max Surfside 3 when he was 8 years old an article was published in their magazine, entitled ‘Eight going on 13’. Shortly after this, while still attending Grace Day School,a story about Ben was published here in the Amityville Record,’Boy and dog help save two women from Bay.’ He received a plaque and was honored by the Amityville Fire Department for this ‘Unselfish Act of Bravery.’ Over the years he has rescued several boaters in distress. Ben’s love and concern for the water is evident in his many community service projects. As a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 014-01-05 he volunteers his time to conduct vessel inspections. Ben is also a member of Boat US and has spearheaded a

monofilament fishing line recycling program which are installed on fishing piers on the Great South Bay. You can see Ben’s on going project installed on the Amityville Beach fishing pier. Ben is a member of Operation Splash and has also helped assist Safe Boating America with their Boating Safety courses. On land, Ben’s other passion is music. As a child Ben combined his two favorite things by taking his boat up the Amityville river for piano lessons with Linda Stillwell. He loves his electric guitar and opened up St Anthony’s HS Variety show with the “Star Spangle Banner’ ala Jimi Hendrix. For the past four years he has been a percussionist with the Concert then Symphonic Band. Ben is most proud of being the founding freshman and now pipe major for St Anthony’s Celtic Friar Pipe Band. They have volunteered

Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953!

and performed at over one hundred functions including New York City’s St. Patrick Day Parade. The Gambella’s home has been devastated by back to back storms, Hurricane Irene then Superstorm Sandy. Today they are only in two-thirds of their house and twothird of their neighbors are back in theirs. Ben continues to help with the cleanup effort and quotes the professional surfer Andy Irons,”It is hard to stay angry at the water.” All who know Ben realize that he is very responsible and that you are truly safe and in good hands when on the water with him. Ben is honored by this nomination to be given such an opportunity to help keep our country safe. Congratulations Richard Benjamin Gambella III we know we will be in good hands!

Northwest Elementary School in Amityville once again opened its doors to students and their parents for their annual Winter Wonderland, an evening designed to allow young children and their families to enjoy winter-themed games while sharpening their minds. The evening started with a sing-a-long led by teachers Margaret Brooks and Mackenzie Jones (Ms. Brook’s daughter Megan, an Amityville graduate and ICE SKATING FUN - Pictured are a few of the St. Martin of Tours students ice former All-State musician, skating at Marjorie Post Park, culminating their recognition of Catholic Schools Week. also lent her talents). Additionally, every student in attendance created a “Chill Out” penguin thermometer and received a goodie bag which included an age appropriate book, pencil and a snack. “The faculty and staff worked very hard to create this educational and fun

night for our students,” said Northwest social worker Debra Lee, who helped to coordinate Winter Wonderland. Northwest Elementary School Principal Dr. Shirley Martin and Assistant Principal Vincent Todisco would like to thank all of the families for supporting the event. Special thanks to COMPASS and Amityville Parent Teacher Coalition for donating funds for the event, as well as the Edmund W. Meet The Candidates Night

LIBRARY DAY - Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined Copiague Memorial Public Library in celebrating Take Your Child To The Library Day as a guest reader. For the third consecutive year, public libraries across the country have designated February 1st as Take Your Child To The Library Day. What began in 2012 as a grass-roots initiative has grown into a national event with hundreds of libraries participating by highlighting the services provided by public libraries and underscoring the importance of taking children to visit their public library.

Once again, the Bay Village Civic Association, representing the Village of Amityville, will conduct a Meet the Candidates Night. This will be open to the public, as a courtesy, following the BVCA membership meeting. That portion will convene at the Park Avenue School auditorium on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:30 p.m. A Special Election will be conducted in the Village on Tuesday, March 18th to fill the remaining one year term for trustee, following the resignation of Peter

Casserly. Nick LaLota was appointed by the mayor to fill that position last year. This election will have him opposed by Andy Powell to occupy the position for the final one year of this term. In 2015, a regular election will be held to fill the position for the usual four year term. Questions will be based on those submitted earlier by BVCA members. The BVCA Executive Board will select several topics to cover the majority of questions. As in the past, only the topics will be

given to the candidates in advance. Responses will be timed and should last for approximately a total of forty-five minutes. A few questions will also be chosen from submissions by the public upon entering the room. No questions will be taken from the floor. Following the formal questioning, informal “meet and greet” time will be afforded over light refreshments. The event should end by 9 p.m.

Reach out to others who may have the same feelings about the day. Don’t hesitate to present your need and ask for companionship and help. I am one of those types of people who always grins and bears it and goes it alone. But on several occasions when the burden was too heavy and I did ask for help, I was so glad I had someone to lean on and help me through my difficult days. One of the best ways to bring diverse groups and populations together is to provide a common cause – one that will strike the sensibilities and values associated with each of those groups. That was the thought process of Ron Weber, who teaches character education in the 21st Century after-school program at Amityville’s Edmund W. Miles Middle School. His students wanted to make a public statement about tolerance and acceptance. They shared their thoughts on how best to get their message across and decided on a group public service announcement video, which now airs on YouTube. “After looking at a number of possibilities, we decided to model our video after a public service announcement that I saw several years ago,” said Mr. Weber, who also teaches technology and advises the Friday morning news club at EWMMS. With the help of his students and support from EWMMS Principal Michele Darby, 21st Century program coordinator Jack Zider, and Assistant Superintendent for Data, Technology and Secondary Education Dr. Mary Kelly, Mr. Weber scripted, filmed and edited the video. Their tag line, which they decided to print on T-shirts, was “I won’t stand for…” followed by terms such as “intolerance,” “hate,” “homophobia,” “racism,” “violence,” “bullying” and “discrimination.” “When we were shooting the video for the “I will not stand for ______,” I was surprised at first. I never really knew that someone actually had the nerve to create a video to help others in such a creative and emotional way,” said EWMMS student Esteban Idrovo, who appears in the video. “It was an amazing and fun activity to be part of. I felt very good on the inside, to know that we were

part of something like this. It was a privilege to be part of a video that can make a difference, for every person it reaches, that may be enough to make a change.” With the creative vision in place, plenty of willing student-actors (including members of the 21st Century

program drama club), and the necessary video equipment already in-house, only one hurdle remained: there was no money in the program’s budget for the T-shirts. Therefore, Mr. Weber appealed to his colleagues in the school community. Various groups and individuals from within the EWMMS school community and around the school district came together to help fund the purchase of 85 T-shirts for students to wear in the video. The support was overwhelming, with many contributors, from individual teachers and staff members to the Amityville Parent Teacher Council, the 21st Century program and Amityville Teachers Association. Once sufficient funds were raised, Mr. Weber met with Bobby T’s in Amityville

NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS SERVICE DIRECTORY

and was pleasantly surprised to hear he was getting a significant discount on the shirts he and his students had designed. Others lent their creative talents to the effort. EWMMS music teacher Jolene Maccarone composed an original score for the PSA. Amityville Memorial High School technology teacher Steve Carbo helped with some of the video shots. Community member and 21st Century program drama adviser Gerald Asbell helped with the production and setup. EWMMS health teacher Bernadette Kraljic also helped organize the production setting. Amityville Board of Education members even turned out the day of the shoot in support of the activity and to help distribute the t-shirts to students. “Everyone and every group who donated something toward making the PSA a reality was excited to hear that under a climate of academic demands, teenagers were extending their time and effort to enhance the character of others,” said Mr. Weber. “As word of the filming got out, it seemed like every group associated with our district asked to be involved to help facilitate this activity. After all was said and done, the recording of the video was a tremendous success. Everyone had come together to help the students make a statement about what is right for our society.” The EWMMS 21st Century “Acceptance and Tolerance” PSA can be viewed on YouTube at http://tinyurl.com/ op55g9x.
