The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org
The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes
a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It begins the last Sunday in January, which in 2020 is January 26th, and runs through Saturday, February 1st. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.’ During Catholic Schools Week, schools across the Diocese, and across the country, mark the occasion with Masses and special entertainment and activities for the students, families, parishioners and members of their extended communities. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and the school’s contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation
How Is Catholic Schools Week Celebrated on Long Island? On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new
families to the benefits of a Catholic education. These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the Sunday the 26th, but can be held early as St Patrick School in Huntington is doing on Thursday the 23rd. In addition to the Open House to welcome new visitors, Catholic Schools Week features a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. Many schools also offer additional open houses and opportunities for prospective new families to visit during the week as well. Catholic schools are unique in many significant ways, and Catholic Schools Week highlights many of those differences. First, Catholic education acknowledges the parents as the original teachers in each of our lives and celebrates the continued and ongoing involvement of parents in their child’s education, and with their child’s school. Catholic Schools Week is the best opportunity for families who might be considering the benefits of a Catholic education
to experience first-hand the commitment to academic excellence and faith formation in your local school. Prospective families tour the facilities, are introduced to the innovative reading and math programs that accelerate academic achievement, and they get to see how the safe, loving, supportive and orderly environment in a Catholic school makes it the perfect environment to support learning. As many of the touring parents have said, the best part of the visit during Catholic Schools Week is being able to see and feel the difference that a value-centered education can make for every child. This is frequently reinforced by the contact prospective families have with the 7th and 8th grade students, most often as tour guides. When you see the confident, caring and courteous individuals these young men and women have become, you begin to really understand the Catholic school difference. School had the opportunity to learn about college life firsthand when members of the Class of 2019 visited the school. The recent graduates spoke about their college experiences so far, including courses, dorm life and be-
ing away from home. The college students answered questions and provided an inside look into the first year of college for the soon-to-be graduates. Throughout the elementary schools, students engaged in different

Younger students dressed up in their aspiring profession, with classrooms filled with doctor, nurses, teachers, firefighters, artists and even astronauts. The younger grades learned all about different colleges, vocational schools and occupations, while fourth and fifth graders researched different colleges and conducted virtual tours of the campuses on their laptops. Deauville Gardens East students used their math skills and knowledge of area and perimeter to design their own dorm rooms, while first graders at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School participated in career stations and explored what it was like to be a fashion designer, architect, chef and writer.

Having these services on the campus of a behavioral health facility is beneficial because child and adolescent psychiatrists are located in the same building to address potential psychiatric issues (depression, anxiety, trauma and ADHD) that sometimes lead to substance abuse. “Our emphasis is on treating the whole person,” said Carolyn Sweetapple, PhD, executive director of South Oaks Hospital. “South Oaks Hospital is committed to addressing substance use disorder as a health issue in which a holistic approach promotes recovery. We offer a variety of programs including yoga, meditation, creative arts, music therapy and psychological education so that people can gain skills that are transferrable and applied to real life. They can create their own daily structure of the program similar to how they would lay out their daily schedule. People receive a nutrition consultation and can participate with our clergy and prayer groups if they’d like. We are treating people’s minds, bodies and spirits.” Families do not have to participate in the adolescent treatment program if the adolescent feels uncomfortable; conversely, if a child isn’t ready for help, the family can receive assistance. South Oaks Hospital, the largest behavioral health facility in Suffolk County, has opened a comprehensive treatment program tailored to treat adolescents ages 13 to 18 with a substance use disorder. Northwell Health created the program in response to requests from eight Long Island school districts South Oaks also provides mental health services to, along with increasing demand from the community. Kevin Cotterell, MD, will lead the program along with the administrative directors -- Jaclene Jason, psychiatry program director at the hospital, and Ken Corbin, South Oak’s director of outpatient substance use disorder treatment services. Services available to the children, teens and their families include: an initial evaluation, preventative strategies, medication management, medication-assisted treatment and family, group and/or individual therapy tailored to the child and family’s needs. South Oaks Hospital now has the full continuum of substance use disorder treatment options including full detoxification, inpatient rehabilitation, intensive outpatient rehabilitation and outpatient rehabilitation. “The adolescent brain is wired to seek out reward and take risks – two things that can put them at higher risk of substance use disorder,” said Sharon Skariah, MD, director of child and adolescent psychiatry at South Oaks Hospital. “Since drugs interfere with the normal development of the adolescent brain, intervening early in terms of treatment and identifying at-risk adolescents can increase success as far as academics, health, social life, and family.” The program uses evidence-based treatments with an emphasis on dialectical behavioral skills, which will help the ado-

They placed the buildings in the gelatin and shook it vigorously back and forth to mimic the movements of the earthquake. If their structures fell, the students had the opportunity to redesign and retest them.

away Nian and bringing about luck. Another component of Chinese New Year is the Chinese zodiac. One animal represents the entire year, and there are 12 different animals. The animal a person is born under can help decide his or her career, health and relationship status. 2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat is associated with wealth and surplus and also is known to be a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to live a peaceful life. The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.

Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who do not trace their heritage back to China. In China, Chinese New Year marks the end of the coldest days on the calendar and welcomes spring with new beginnings and the start of planting season. This spectacular holiday follows the lunar calendar, so there is no set date for the event. The Lunar New Year begins between January 21 and February 20 each year and lasts about 15 days. In 2020, the celebration begins on Saturday, January 25. Fireworks are a large part of Chinese New Year festivals. According to Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought Nian off using fireworks,

MARINE IS ON A MISSION - The Marines live by the motto of never leaving anyone behind. For some that includes a dog they have rescued during deployment, and have bonded with. The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns soon. Guardians of Rescue have helped other military members pull off this same mission, and they are seeking public donations to help pull it off again. Along with paying fees to allow the dog to leave, there is medical care, airfare, and other relocation expenses involved.
