The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do.

From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs.

The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play!

In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others.

Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Referee Of The Year

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association December 15, 2019 Founded in 1971, the Long Island Soccer Referees Association (LISRA) is one of the oldest organizations in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and the largest referee association by far in the state. For the past five decades, LISRA has been providing refs for Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) games and has assigned officials to an estimated 750,000 soccer games since its inception.

The LISRA Holiday Party at the James E. Allen Elementary School in Dix Hills on Thursday night, December 12 saw awards given to 16 referees who have particularly made a difference on Long Island soccer fields.

LISRA Trustee Cathy Caldwell of Copiague was selected as the 2019 Referee of the Year.

The Silver Whistle Award for excellence in officiating went to Valley Stream’s Jack Shippy.

Shippy’s neighbor, Ian Reid of Lynbrook, received the Emrys Joseph Rookie of the Year Award. Joseph was a very personable LISRA ref and member of the Board of Directors who passed away 29 years ago and this award has been given annually in his honor ever since.

Gilon Goldman of Holtsville won the Rising Star Award for young referee of the year.

Greenlawn’s Arianna Starost and Westbury’s Emanuel Ventura received the Mario Boltri Assistant Referee Award. Boltri is a former LISRA President who created the chapter’s wildly successful assistant referee program after the turn of the millennium and there are now 640 LISRA assistant referees.

Assistant referees also honored by LISRA on that cold winter night were Julia Desiano (Mount Sinai),

Michael Flores (Medford), Joe LoNegro (Smithtown), Gaetano Parisi (North Bellmore), Isabella Pedone (Lindenhurst), siblings Amanda and Andrew Pietrofeso (Glen Oaks), John Reid (Lynbrook), Scott Thorley (Manorville) and Megan Zabrouski (Bethpage). The AR awards are based on the ratings of the refs who grade the assistants after every game plus comments from the refs as well as the assignors.

Amityville Trio Earns String Festival Selection The Long Island String Festival will welcome three Amityville student-musicians to its ensembles in January.

Amityville Memorial High School junior Alex Diaz, Edmund W. Miles Middle School eighth grader Madeline Shingleton and Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School fifth grader Joel Biju will represent the district at the festival which will feature talented musicians from schools

all over Long Island.

Alex, who plays the viola, will join the Suffolk secondary orchestra for a performance on Jan. 12 at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School.

Additionally, Alex was a member of the New York State School Music Association’s All-State Symphonic Orchestra, which performed in early December in Rochester, earning the fourth seat in his section.

Madeline and Joel, who

both play the cello, will perform as members of the Suffolk intermediate orchestra on Jan. 26 at Northport High School.

This is Madeline’s third LISFA selection and she will play in the grades 7 and 8 concert while Joel will make his festival debut in the grade 5 concert.

The district’s orchestra teachers are Christine Klimek and Bianca Ferrante.
