assau County Legislator Joseph Belesi recently hosted a Bicycle Rodeo to provide bike safety instructions and give out free bike helmets to all children who participated in the “Bicycle Rodeo” course. Participants were also given free child ID cards to carry with them at all times. Families came for the fun and took the safety home with them. Thanks to all whose time and effort made this program such a success. Your devotion was greatly appreciated.

I’m pleased that we were once again able to offer this important service to local residents,” said Senator Fuschillo. Autism is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and is typically diagnosed before the age of three. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the alarming rate of autism is 1 in every 88 births and a child is diagnosed on the spectrum. ASDs occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups and are four times more likely to occur in boys than in girls. When autism is detected earlier and appropriate intervention is taken, children with ASD can become more functional and learn to adapt to the world around them. No matter the age of the diagnosis, children and adults with ASD are constant learners and significant improvements can be made at any age. This year, the event will include a Motorcycle run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. Registration for the walk begins at 9:00 a.m. and the 5K Walk will start at 10:30 a.m. The family activities will continue throughout the day until 2:30 p.m. Biker registration begins at 9 a.m. at Hansen Home Designs located at 1541 Smithtown Avenue in Bohemia. Kickstands are set to be up by 10 a.m. A rain date has been set for September 30th. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson. “It is heartwarming to have talented individuals enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefitthousand of fellow Long Islanders.”

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be hosting the DDI Walk and Motorcycle Run for Autism, on September 23rd at the Holtsville Ecology Center. The walk and motorcycle run will help to promote community support for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. “This year we are hoping to make the event bigger and better with the addition of the motorcycle run,” commented co-chair of the event Brian Brunjes. “All proceeds will help to benefit the more than 5,000 children and adults that DDI serves across Long Island with autism and other developmental disabilities. I encourage everyone to come out and take part in this worth while cause.” The scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County's Holtsville Ecology Park will feature activities for

More baby boomers are staying in the workforce longer. Between 2006 and 2016, the number of older people in the workforce is expected to soar, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Workers between the ages of 55 and 64 are expected to increase by 36.5 percent. The number of workers between 65 and 74 is expected to climb by

a staggering 83.4 percent, and even the number of workers who are 75 and older is expected to grow by 84.3 percent. By 2016, the BLS says, workers age 65 and over are expected to make up 6.1 percent of the total labor force - a steep jump from their 3.6 percent share in 2006. This means that individuals need to take charge of their health -

including hearing health so they can maximize their chances for success on the job. Along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it’s important that boomers routinely get their hearing checked - and that they address any hearing loss so it doesn’t undermine their efforts on the job or their quality of life. Consider this: According to the Better

Hearing Institute (www.betterhearing.org) more than 34 million Americans suffer from hearing loss - about 11 percent of the U.S. population - and 60 percent of them are below retirement age. Research shows that the use of hearing aids reduces the risk of income loss by 90 to 100 percent for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77 percent for those with severe to

moderate hearing loss. More good news: Today’s employers recognize the changing demographics of the modern aging workforce and increasingly are making efforts to hold onto their older workers. Employers value the experience that mature employees bring to the job - along with the strong work ethic and other positive attributes that older workers tend to

possess. More and more companies, in fact, engage in workplace wellness programs to help keep their employees in good health. And hearing health - including hearing checks - is increasingly included in these programs. For information on this topic, visit www.hearingcheck.org.

New Benefits May Help Keep Seniors Healthier and other chronic conditions. On top of that, Medicare now covers a yearly “wellness” exam that can spotlight steps you need to take to take charge of your health. As part of this checkup, you can work with your doctor on developing your own prevention plan. These new benefits can make a difference in people’s lives, because they enable older Americans to get the preventive care they need without worrying about cost. Research has shown that individuals are less likely to get health screenings when they have to pay for them. Many older Americans have not been getting important preventive services, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For example, millions of older people at risk for diabetes and colorectal

cancer have not been screened for those illnesses. Similarly, millions of older Americans have not received a vaccine for pneumococcal disease, even though research shows that the risk of developing the diseases increases with age and the presence of chronic conditions. When it comes to staying well, most people know they should eat right, get exercise and keep their weight in check. Now, many can add a new item to the list by taking advantage of Medicare’s new benefits for preventive services. Such services could save your life. To learn more about preventive services in Medicare, click on www.aarp.org/healthscree nings. And for more information about the health law, visit www.aarp.org/getthefacts.

(NAPSI)—Staying healthy just got a little easier if you’re 65 or older. That’s because Medicare now covers many wellness and preventive services free of charge. Older Americans can get important screenings, immunizations and an annual “wellness” checkup without spending a dime, under provisions in the Affordable Care Act that took effect in January 2011. “These services have the potential to add years to your life-and the life of your loved ones,” said AARP board member and geriatric specialist William J. Hall, M.D. “We urge older Americans to get all the preventive services their doctors recommend.” For the first time, Medicare will pay entirely for a host of vital screenings-for colon and other cancers, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis

More than three thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the Heart Walk on Sunday, September 23rd to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said John R. Buran, Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of Flushing Bank and

Chairman of the Long Island Heart Walk. “That’s a ‘healthy’ return on investment, and one that we hope will inspire participants to take up walking regularly using American Heart Association Walking Paths and Walking Clubs.” Heart Walk participants will experience three “communities” that feature relevant resources and activities. The “My Heart” community will: • Foster hope by bringing together people with similar experiences, sorrows and fears. • Allow people to acknowledge their losses and pay tribute to loved ones.

• Provide an opportunity to honor survivors and individuals whose family and friends have been impacted by heart disease and stroke. • Give survivors hope that they can influence their own and their loved ones’ destinies by connecting risk factors to a personal loss. The “My Life” community will: • Inspire participants to make changes in their daily behavior that reduce risk for heart disease and stroke, such as increasing physical activity and making hearthealthy choices a part of daily life. • Inspire participants to make a long-term commitment in the fight against heart disease and stroke by volunteering for the American Heart Association. The “My Community” area will: • Celebrate individuals and companies that have made significant changes to lead a heart-healthy life (e.g., by being more active, losing weight, etc.) or encourage employees to

Red Cap! Stroke Survivors receive a White Cap! Research has shown walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. The benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease. “We want people to know that it is never too late to start down a healthier path,” said John R. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s not often that things work out perfectly, from beginning to end. But, if ever there was a time and a place – and a day – for an exception to that rule, I am happy to say that my 30th birthday came awfully close. I suppose, when you start with the love and thoughtfulness of two parents who would do anything to make their “little girl’s” day one fit for a princess – well then, how could you possibly go wrong? From morning til night, everything fell into place perfectly, making for a day full of magic and memories for me. Months ago, when asked what I wanted to do for the big day, my initial response

Fresh Air The average person spends more than 32 full days every year locked inside the confines of their car's interior.

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie was, “Take off from work.” That being a given, my next wish was to spend that day off in my favorite place (so far), Manhattan. I’m one of those people for whom the city never gets old. No matter how many times you visit, there is always something new to see and a unique experience waiting around the next corner. This time, it was heading to Broadway to see Jersey Boys (finally!) and dining at Patsy’s, an old favorite of the one and only Frank Sinatra, among countless others. Phenomenal, on both fronts. That was the plan, anyway. What to do with that small window of time before dinner and the show though… Let me explain something here… EVERY time we have visited the city, for as far back as I can remember, I have wanted

to take a carriage ride through Central Park. Call it my very own Cinderella fantasy or whatever you’d like, but there is something magical about seeing those horses strolling the streets of New York City, no matter the season. And so, on this day – my day – I got to be Cinderella. How awesome is that? Thank you to everyone who made my 30th birthday – and the days leading up to and following it – more special than words alone can express. But above all, thank you to my parents for making a milestone I had approached with mixed emotions into a weeklong succession of presents and festivities, culminating in just one – emotion, that is – happiness. Complete and utter happiness. Like I said, perfection.

Shellfish Facility Tour

The Nassau County chapter of New York Agri-Women, an organization of women involved in agriculture, met on Thursday, August 9th, at the Town of H e m p s t e a d ’ s Department of Conservation and Waterways in Point Lookout, Long Island, to learn about the Town’s aquaculture and energy conservation projects. After a brief chapter meeting led by NYAW’s Nassau County leader Mary Callanan, the group toured the Town’s facilities. Tara Schneider, a conservation biologist with the Town of Hempstead, conducted a tour of the Town’s hydrogen fuel, wind turbine and solar power facilities. Tom Landi, the Town’s shellfish facility manager, explained the Town’s aquaculture

efforts and led a tour of its shellfish seeding facilities. The Town’s aquaculture facilities include its indoor shellfish hatchery and its outdoor floating upweller system (“FLUPSY”). These facilities raise clams and oysters from seedstock purchased from local hatcheries, and use them to replenish clam and oyster populations in Hempstead Bay. The Town is currently working on ways to create oyster reefs to encourage further growth of the Bay’s oyster population. Under Mr. Landi’s direction and with the aid of grant funding, the Town has been able to design and construct a building specifically engineered to use local waters to raise the shellfish, and to increase its yield from

about 800,000 clams to over 2 million clams. In addition to shellfish farming, the Town’s Point Lookout facility also houses several energy conservation projects. Ms. Schneider showed the NYAW group the Town’s hydrogen production facility, explaining how water is converted into energy by de-ionizing the water and separating it into its component elements of oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen is vented back into the atmosphere, while the hydrogen is piped into storage or holding tanks before being used at the pump to fuel specially engineered hydrogenpowered vehicles, such as Town trucks and buses. Some of the Town vehicles use a blend of hydrogen gas and natural gas. The Town has entered into

partnerships with private companies to further the research and development of hydrogen-powered vehicles and the generation of hydrogen fuel. In order to supply the electricity needed to run the hydrogen-generating facility, the Town of Hempstead erected a wind turbine on its Point Lookout property. Ms. Schneider explained the details involved in construction of the turbine, and allowed the group to look inside the turbine. In addition to hydrogen and solar energy, the Town facility also includes solar array panels and a geothermal heating and cooling system. Topics discussed at the NYAW chapter meeting included a recap of prior events held at Ridgelands Farm and Crossroads

Farm at Grossmann’s in Nassau County, participation in local farmer’s markets, land use and preservation, recent weather and crop conditions, mosquito spraying for West Nile virus, consumer outreach, educational programs and other agricultural issues. Members and guests enjoyed home-baked scones and brown bread, heirloom tomatoes, home-made jam and local honey contributed by the event’s organizers, Ms. Callanan and Annetta Centrella-Vitale, who are also local farmers. New York Agri-Women is a state affiliate of American Agri-Women, a national coalition of women in agriculture that provides forum for communication and the promotion of agriculture.

Information about NYAW is available at www.newyorkagriwomen .com or by contacting Nassau County leader Mary Callanan at callananmt@hotmail.co m or Long Island District leader Vicki Gruber at vgruber@vsgpc.com.

Dear Readers, In the interest of providing correct information rather than mindless reconstituted filler, here are some true facts about raccoons: 1. Myth: Raccoons are all carriers of rabies. Fact: The majority of Raccoons DO NOT CARRY RABIES, and if a raccoon contracts rabies it will soon die, just as a dog or a human would. It is not “a carrier” that lives out its lifetime carrying rabies and potentially infecting humans or pets. 2. Myth: Raccoons carry ticks and fleas Fact: That potential exists just as it does with cats and dogs. 3. Myth: Raccoons are strictly nocturnal, so if you see a raccoon in the daytime, it is rabid. Fact: Although in this part of the country raccoons are more active at night, they will come out during the day looking for food...especially the females looking for food to feed a litter of babies. 4. Myth: Raccoons are members of the rodent family. Fact: Raccoons are members of the Procyonidae family, which is part of the order Carnivora, to which the cat and dog families also belong. Among the raccoon’s closest relatives are the coatimundis, ringtails and red pandas. Readers, did you know that raccoons are sold as pets in some pet stores in Florida? And it is not unusual to find raccoons visiting picnic areas during the daytime hours in Florida, where picnickers delight in their adorable antics. I visited a friend in Florida who has had a pet raccoon for thirteen years. The raccoon litter box trained herself and participates in the household just as a beloved, affectionate dog would. As a matter of fact, my friend’s dog and raccoon are best buddies. When I picked the raccoon up, it was like snuggling with a live teddy bear! This raccoon was originally found injured outside on the back deck. Here at home in Nassau and Suffolk, each county has very different laws governing the treatment of raccoons from one county to the next. Ah, our uninformed, head-in-the-sand local politicians. But you already know how I feel about most of them. Please note that I am not suggesting Readers run out and invite the nearest raccoon home with them. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

Understanding Small Loans (NAPSI)—For many, the answer to a financial dilemma can come from asking the right questions. To help, a public interest organization has come up with four quarterly booklets, with worksheets and self-assessment information, for those considering personal loans. The first, “Understanding Personal Loans,” helps potential borrowers find answers to six important questions:
