Introduction When you become a New York Personal Trainer the clients don't just materialize out of thin air. As a new personal trainer, you have to work to establish yourself. While making sure that you have all the basics covered – such as business cards, a business phone and a page on a trainer listing site; there is a lot more that has to happen. You have to develop a clientele before you begin working with a gym, although there are some that will take newbie trainers – you won't get the ideal time slots.
Developing a clientele To develop a clientele you first have to identify who you work best with. You may believe that personal training is for everyone, but that doesn't mean you are going to work well with just anyone. Know who you want to work with, and what you would like to do with them. Almost all successful trainers specialize in a few methods. Examples of this would be trainers who advertise CrossFit or Boot Camp programs, some do yoga or boxing; this is in addition to the rest of the PT routines they can offer. Then you have to get your name and number in front of your prospects.
Working with a gym
Ideally you want to work with a gym. This has the benefits of the gym providing and caring for maintenance and space while you can keep your focus on your programs. Most gyms want to see that you have a clientele that will follow you and buy a membership there. Other gyms will look for specialist trainers to fill out the roster of programs they can offer their members.
Doing a little bit of both The best New York City Personal Trainers do a little bit of both. They have slots available at a local gym so they can piggyback their marketing off the gym's campaigns; but they also run their own programs outside of the gym or in their own personal studio. You do want to consider opening your own studio when you get to the point where you can contract with other personal trainers in NYC that support your methods so you can grow your business.
