Neighborhood News A Word from

Goodbye June, hello July! We’re now officially at the midpoint of the year. For those of you still following their New Year’s resolutions, congratulations, you’re half way there! But if you’ve gotten off track, it’s not too late to finish up the rest of the year strong.

After a sharp uptick in my cholesterol last year, my doctor gave me the option of either starting on a statin or losing weight to see if that would be enough to lower it down. I resolved to work out more and started doing 9Round Kickboxing a few times a week with my wife. A few months later, ten pounds were gone, and more importantly, my cholesterol dropped 13 points on my next screening. So, if you resolved to get healthier this year, I highly recommend trying out a fun fitness center like 9Round (see page 14 for more info) to help achieve your goal.

America’s birthday, Independence Day, is on Thursday, July 4th so this is your reminder to get your flags ready to fly. And be sure to check our Facebook page for where to watch the best local fireworks.

If you reside outside one of the 36 communities the Neighborhood News direct mails to each month, we also offer a free digital subscription – just email our office to request having your email added, and you’ll automatically receive our issue that you can read on your phone or computer. You can also read our current and previous issues online at www.NeighborhoodNewsInfo.com or on our Facebook Page (Neighborhood News-Lake Worth.)

Have a wonderful month and a safe and happy 4th of July celebration!

At first, Maj. Roy Bates just wanted to play rock and roll and be a pirate -- a radio pirate, not a sailing one. It all started in the 1960s, when Bates set up a pirate radio station on a concrete platform in the North Sea. The station, unauthorized by the U.K. government, was called Radio Essex -- a little enterprise that played pop music at a time when the BBC didn't.

He had a following, but the U.K. government was not amused. Radio Essex was occupying a platform that the Brits built to defend their coast during World War II, and the Brits wanted him out. After being kicked off the platform in 1966, Bates learned of a similar abandoned construction, a steel and concrete platform about seven miles off the coast, and more importantly, outside of the U.K.'s territorial waters.

His vision expanded. Bates declared the platform was a principality, his wife and daughter princesses, and his son a prince. The 13,000 square foot platform became the Principality of Sealand.

Today, at less than one acre, Sealand has seven rooms, its own flag, stamps, coins and national anthem. It generates its own electricity with turbines and solar panels. Fresh water comes from rain. Sealand has 106 official citizens. Major Bates passed away in 2012 and his wife followed four years later. The nation's website: sealandgov. org. There you can purchase a royal Sealand title or buy a little piece of the principality.

America's founding fathers didn't look much like revolutionaries. They were proper gentlemen in breeches and powdered wigs. When they gathered to discuss their quarrel with Britain in meetings that commenced in 1774, some of the 56 representatives from the 13 colonies were not yet in favor of complete independence.

They were merchants, farmers, and tradesmen -- not revolutionaries. They were also not above cutting deals and maligning each other, particularly John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Still, they continued their historic -- and often dangerous -- work.

In an age when monarchies still ruled the world, they refused to create a country divided into classes of "ordinary people" and "gentlemen." They would not accept that birth dictated place -- as it did in all other countries.

Their thinking informs American opinion even today. A recent YouGov survey found that 63 percent of Americans oppose a U.S. monarchy, an attitude that crosses the political divide. Both Jefferson and Adams died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of independence. But today, their spirits live on, and we continue to honor and tend to their most precious legacy: the longest-lasting republic in the history of the world.

Here's a way to make yourself a little stronger, improve your heart health, boost your mood and thinking power, and provide a little adventure: E-bikes. That's right, electric bikes, or e-bikes. Those are pedal bikes fitted with an electric motor. There are also adult trikes that can be fitted with a motor.

According to a recent study from the UK, e-bikes might actually provide older adults with more physical and mental benefits than conventional bikes. A group of 100 older adults, ages 50 to 83, participated in the study. Half of the group rode conventional bikes, while the other half rode e-bikes. Each participant had to ride at least three times a week for thirty minutes. The e-bike riders showed similar or greater benefits than the pedal cyclists.

Researchers concluded that the benefits come from both physical activity and engagement with the outdoor environment. E-bike riders could stay out longer and go more places, for one thing. You might be wondering whether you can really work your muscles with an electric-powered bicycle.

According to National Geographic, most riders use a low pedal assist power setting. Riders are pedaling, but not quite as hard -- which helps them cash in on a host of benefits. E-bike riders spend more time on their bikes and studies show they have reduced stress, improved sleep, and are generally happier. E-bike clubs also provide companionship on bike paths and trails. E-bikes are available with a wide range of configurations and price points. You can buy an e-trike, such as the Liberty Trike, for about $2,000. This small foldable adult trike holds riders up to 300 pounds and can be used in many public places as a mobility device. Other bikes and trikes can retail from around $1,600 to as much as $13,000. Generally speaking, lighter bikes come with higher price tags.

A Nuclear Reactor Formed

by Nature

There was a nuclear reactor in Gabon, Africa two billion years ago. No, it wasn't put there by aliens or an ancient civilization. It was created by an unusual circumstance: A combination of a large river, sandstone, siltstone, magmatic rocks, bacteria, and earthquakes.

Scientists discovered what was, in reality, a natural nuclear reactor in 1972 when they went to a uranium mine in Gabon. There, they discovered that some of the mined uranium had a lower concentration of the isotope uranium 235 than what was expected, nor thought possible.

But, the only way this could be true is if the uranium had been in a nuclear reaction. And it turns out, it had. Scientists were astonished to conclude that there had been a nuclear reactor there. It was an entirely natural one, in a place called the Oklo-Formation.

According to Forbes, bacteria in weathering magmatic rocks concentrated the uranium high enough to start a nuclear chain reaction. At the same time, water filtered down the formation to allow sustained, stable nuclear fission. The reactor produced unused energy for hundreds of thousands of years. As for the toxic waste discharges of plutonium and cesium, they were surrounded by ruthenium, a rare inert metal, and thus isolated from the environment, which made the waste harmless.

Why Aren’t Kids Growing Up?

Kids that are unmotivated, hypersensitive, and defined by their supposed mental defects -- Is this the condition of today's children? One author says yes. Abigail Shrier’s book, ‘Bad Therapy: Why Aren't the Kids Growing Up,’ has gotten a lot of attention because it proposes that an increased focus on therapy has actually harmed kids.

"With treatment of illness, the more treatment there is, the more the prevalence rate of a disorder should go down," Shrier tells Reason.com. "We saw this with breast cancer treatment and other things. The incidence of death from breast cancer went down with more pervasive treatment. Here, there's been vast expansion of (mental health) treatment and the rates of depression and anxiety have only shot up."

Quoting the Centers for Disease Control, Shrier says that by 2016 one in six children between the ages of 2 and 8 already had a mental health or behavior diagnosis. Today 40 percent have been in therapy. "We're taking healthy kids who are a little bummed out or a bit anxious and loading them with intervention, much of it through social emotional learning and therapeutic techniques now going on in school."

Shrier says kids come to believe they are damaged and their feelings are their defining characteristics. In fact, Shrier writes, focusing on feelings tends to make kids mentally fragile and less resilient. Instead of sending the kids to therapy, Shrier says people should surround kids with family, teach them a skill and give them unmonitored time. Don't try to be a kid's pal. Be the authority in the home.

First Hydrogen Yacht Debuts

Dutch luxury shipbuilder Feadship has introduced the first hydrogen fuel-cell powered superyacht, called Project 821. After five years of design and construction, the 390-foot vessel finally left the Amsterdam shipyard on May 4. The ship stores liquid hydrogen on board at temperatures below -253 degrees centigrade. The hydrogen cells can provide completely clean power while cruising between harbors and can power the yacht's 30-person hotel for a week.

With battery-powered electric cars getting all the attention, you might not realize that there are about 72,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the road today, according to Hydrogen Insight. That number is 42 percent higher than last year. In comparison, battery-powered electric car sales topped 10 million last year, up 55 percent compared to 2022.

Hydrogen remains the top preference for trucks, since hydrogen refueling takes just minutes instead of the hours required to charge an electric vehicle. However, batterypowered truck sales have been helped along by battery swapping stations. About 2,000 such stations already operate in China now, serving some of the 12,000 trucks designed for battery-swapping that were sold last year.

Swapping batteries takes about three to five minutes. China is also home to more than 95 percent of the world's hydrogen trucks. There were a total of 1,020 hydrogen refueling stations around the world last year. China had the most, followed by South Korea, Japan and Germany. As of 2023, there were only 59 retail hydrogen stations in the U.S.

Skip These Home Decor Trends

There are endless home decor trends that come and go, and while some timeless styles stick with us for years, some are better left in the past. Say goodbye to these home decor trends that interior designers say should now be avoided.

Vessel Sinks. You've probably seen vessel sinks in hotels or restaurants, as they were a big trend for interior design. However, vessel sinks are impractical because they are difficult to use and clean. They're also tough to repair, and it's not worth the effort.

Too Much Gray. Just like you can have too much white, an overload of gray is a trend to leave behind this year. Too much gray will make your space look gloomy and uninspiring. More and more people are leaning toward incorporating color into their homes to make them feel cozy and welcoming.

Vertical Blinds. Vertical blinds, need we say more? Not only are they difficult to open, but they're also a trend from the past. Today, you can choose from endless beautiful window coverings that will add elegance and style to your space.

Popcorn Ceilings. Popcorn ceilings were everywhere in the 80's and 90's, but today, a smooth and sleek ceiling is the go-to interior design style everyone loves!

Dog Days of Summer

As summer heat peaks, it brings not just sunny days but also serious risks for our furry companions. Dogs, with their fur coats and/or short muzzles and limited cooling mechanisms, are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. When temperatures soar, dogs can suffer from heat exhaustion, heatstroke, dehydration, and burned paw pads. Unlike humans, dogs cool themselves by panting, which becomes less effective as the mercury rises. This can lead to rapid overheating, organ failure and potentially fatal consequences.

Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs include excessive panting, drooling, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, and even collapse. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can damage their organs and, in severe cases, lead to death. Additionally, hot pavement can burn sensitive paw pads, causing pain and discomfort.

To keep your canine companion safe during the summer months, provide plenty of shade and fresh water, and avoid overexertion during the hottest parts of the day. Never leave your dog in a parked car, as temperatures inside can skyrocket within minutes, even with the windows cracked. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are cooler, and always test the pavement with your hand - if it's too hot for your palm, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Early intervention can save a dog's

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...

Is Mick Jagger the greatest frontman of them all? Fans of Gwen Stefani and Bono may have something to say here. But after sixty years of singing lead for the Rolling Stones, you have got to give Jagger his due. After all, even after open-heart surgery in 2019, he is still strutting on stage in his early eighties and has been knighted for his contributions to popular music.

Sir Jagger will be 81 on July 26. “Long may we be wishing him happy birthday,” lead guitarist Keith Richards stated last year. Jagger and Richards were classmates who both shared an affinity with American blues, most notably, Chuck Berry. Jagger and Richards were soon to meet fellow guitarist Brian Jones in London in 1962. The name of The Rolling Stones was inspired by a Muddy Waters’ 1950 tune, Rollin’ Stone.

‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ was their first number one hit. The song has a near- infinite shelf life. It has an iconic guitar riff, and Jagger belts out lyrics that attacked modern culture. The song has been proclaimed by singer Art Garfunkel as being, “the greatest rock and roll song ever.”

Jagger became a great–grandfather ten years ago and has been married twice. The Jagger – Richards songwriting team have produced a record thirty eight top-ten albums, one album more than Barbra Streisand. And I’ll add that it was an incredible evening for me having the opportunity to see The Rolling Stones one last time in Orlando last month.

SON LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH

EMERSON PLUMBING

Written by Irving Berlin, God Bless America was presented to audiences by Kate Smith (“The first Lady of Radio”) on her variety show in 1938. She commented on her signature song, “I feel it’s one of the most beautiful compositions ever written.” With recognizable lyrics such as “Land that I love” and “My home, sweet home,” there are many others who share such a sentiment.

Irving Berlin emigrated as a boy with his family from Siberia to the United States in the late 1800’s. Determined to make a living in a field other than manual labor, he took up songwriting. Starting as a singing waiter in Chinatown, he went on to write over 3,000 songs including White Christmas and Puttin’ On the Ritz. He also wrote numerous film and Broadway scores –and he did all of this with only basic piano skills.

God Bless America expresses Berlin’s appreciation for the opportunity given to him as an aspiring songwriter and his love for his country. Written in the form of a prayer, its essence has inspired generations of patriotic Americans. Numerous congressmen sang it on the steps of the U.S Capitol on the evening of September 11th. Lady Gaga recorded it for Super Bowl LI. Even Archie Bunker, in 1971, belted it out upon being introduced to his soon-to-be son-in-law.

We should all be grateful that Irving Berlin took up the challenge of penning an anthem that would inspire so many Americans over the years.

Paradise is Just Around the Corner

Our lovely state of Florida holds so much beauty that many of us take for granted. I personally love to explore and find new places near me. One of my favorite places is Jupiter.

About a 40-minute drive, this town is the best place for the perfect beach day. When I first started going to Jupiter, it would be to surf at Carlin Park, a little park that leads to the most gorgeous beach. The beach isn’t usually as crowded as Lake Worth Beach and is far bigger.

Just near Carlin Park is Ocean Magic Surf Shop and Soul Rebel. I absolutely adore both of these places. Ocean Magic is the perfect surf shop for surfboards and cute beach outfits.

Soul Rebel is a one of a kind açaí cafe. I think they have the best açaí and this place ranks higher than other açaí places such as Bahia Bowls, Sobol, and Playa Bowls. Not only do they have açaí, but they also have smoothies, toast, salads, and juices. Also, the avocado toast is a delicious choice. Any time I’m in Jupiter, it is a must have.

Besides these places, what I believe to be the best location in Jupiter is Cato’s bridge. Cato’s is a bridge that is just past the famous Jupiter Lighthouse parking lot. The bridge goes over the intracoastal waterways, and under the bridge is a little mini beach. It is the perfect spot for kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, or spending the day on one of the mini beaches.

The water is the best part, seeing how clear it is, and getting to see fish, crabs, and maybe even starfish. It’s my absolute favorite place to spend the day in the water and the sun. It feels like a piece of paradise. If you don’t already have Cato’s on your bucket list, it is definitely one you want to add!

Mistaken Identity

The bartender asks the guy sitting at the bar, “What’ll you have”?

The guy answers, “A scotch, please.”

The bartender hands him the drink, and says, “That’ll be five bucks.”

Guy replies, “What are you talking about? I don’t owe you anything for this.”

A lawyer, sitting nearby and overhearing the conversation, then says to the bartender, “You know, he’s got you there. In the original offer, which constitutes a binding contract upon acceptance, there was no stipulation of remuneration.”

The bartender was not impressed, but says to the guy, “Okay, you beat me for a drink. But don’t ever let me catch you in here again!”

The next day, the same guy walks into the bar.

Bartender says, “What are you doing in here? I can’t believe you’ve got the audacity to come back!”

The guy says, “What are you talking about? I’ve never been in this place in my life!”

The bartender apologizes, “I’m very sorry, this is uncanny...You must have a double.”

The guy replies, “Thank you, make it a scotch.”

The Key to Proper Hydration

Keeping your body hydrated by taking in enough fluids is an important part of good health. But even if you don't drink the recommended eight glasses of water each day, you might not have to worry. Counting the food and beverages people consume each day, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) says Americans are usually getting enough water without purposely drinking more.

Caffeinated beverages can actually be counted. IOM's Food and Nutrition board says there is little evidence that caffeinated beverages flush water and its benefits from the body. They do contribute to hydration, but are often full of sugar and phosphates, which can weaken bones and teeth.

The real hydration problem is too much sodium. The average man takes in two to three times the daily recommended sodium intake and women get twice as much as they need. The second problem is a lack of potassium, an essential nutrient found in spinach, potatoes, cantaloupe, bananas, almonds and mushrooms. IOM recommends that adults get at least 4.7 grams of potassium daily, but the average man only gets around 3.1 grams. Women get around 2.3 grams.

Doctors writing in HealthNews say getting too much salt and too little potassium also increases the risk of high blood pressure. Balancing these two nutrients is the key. Before exercising or when you are outdoors in hot weather, drink extra water to make up for what you lose through sweating. By limiting salt, getting enough potassium, and drinking more on hot days, you’ll keep your body properly hydrated.

One Phone to Rule Them All

Think about how many iterations of the telephone we have used in our lifetime. Rotary phones were the most common device for decades. Then came the button phone (Touch-Tone) that included those curious extra digits of * and #.

The Trimline phone, introduced in 1965, was very space age, with the illuminated rotary dial (and later the buttons) located in the handset itself. Interestingly, this same concept carried over to today's mobile phones.

In the past, phone service required the telephone man to come out to a house to wire in a phone. Occasionally we heard stories of the fabulously wealthy who had additional phones in their bathrooms — a true luxury in an age when people had to go to their phones and not the other way around. For a long time, most people only had a square desk phone — very durable and easy to use — or a wall phone (with a really long cord so you could do the dishes while chatting).

Unlike today, for most of our lives, we didn't actually own our home phones, and instead technically leased them from the phone company. You could move to a new house or apartment, but the phone stayed where it was. The phone might not have been yours, but it also didn't cost much, unlike today's sophisticated mobile devices that routinely retail for $1,000 or more. Only in 1976 did the FCC finally make it possible to own a phone -- ushering an explosion of fancy and weird phones into the retail market. In 1983, AT&T began selling its own phones instead of leasing them.
