Leadership. Tradition. True Blue.

August 2020

FFA Jackets: A Symbol of Hope and Belonging “This member’s family works very hard and has high financial need. Both of her parents work additional jobs off the farm to help make ends meet. This member is a very hard worker. After joining FFA in junior high, she realized the many opportunities FFA has to offer. So early on in her experience, FFA has helped her break out of her shell and find her voice and a community she feels welcomed by. I am nominating her to receive a jacket with strong expectations of the leader she can become.” “This member has a single mother who works very hard but he mentioned to me earlier this year that he would have to wait until his mom got paid before he could pay his FFA dues. I know his family would greatly appreciate any financial help. I have never met a more reflective and self-aware high school freshman. He puts so much energy and excitement into his ag classes and FFA activities. I am proud to call him my student.” These are excerpts from the 2019 Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. program advisor statements. With new challenges and difficult times being presented this year, there are many students battling financial stability, health issues and even

homelessness. An FFA jacket has the power to fill many members with confidence, a sense of hope for their future and provide them with a physical piece of belonging to a community they love, FFA. Each year, thanks to donors like you, students know what it’s like to be welcomed into the FFA family. Your gift of $100 gives one FFA member a lifetime of opportunities. This upcoming school year Nebraska will have a total of 200 FFA chapters, more chapters throughout the state than ever before! In 2019, nearly 800 FFA members applied for a jacket through the Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. program. With the continued growth of agricultural education and FFA programs in Nebraska combined with the increased costs to purchase an FFA jacket, we expect the need to continue to grow. If you feel compelled to support this campaign and provide for our leaders of tomorrow, please fill out the enclosed envelope or go to to make your 2020 Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. donation by September 1.

Greetings, Nebraska FFA! It is no secret that this year has been far different than previous ones. However, I know the strength and perseverance behind FFA chapters and members, and we will continue to get through the adversities thrown at us each and every day. I can’t put into words how honored and excited I am to serve as your 2020-2021 Nebraska FFA State President. It has been such an exciting transformation since the announcement at the beginning of May. It is truly a blessing to be able to work with such innovative members and advisors, and we can’t wait to meet each and every one of you whether that is virtually or in-person. Over the last couple of months, my team and I have been able to grow not only as leaders, but as individuals through the trainings we attended via Zoom. It was truly an eye-opening experience for each of us because we were able to learn so much more about each other. We attended Base Camp and State Officer Leadership Academy (SOLA) in May which allowed us to meet incredible individuals in and outside of FFA! Even though Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) was not held at The Leadership Center this year, we are excited to announce that we are holding the 2020 COLT Conference virtually. Additionally, our team will begin hosting virtual meetings with chapters and their officers where we will be able to learn more about Nebraska FFA and the agriculture opportunities that surround us. I can speak for my entire team on this one, we can not wait to meet and interact with such outstanding and driven people. Nebraska FFA, we are strong, powerful, and motivated; there is no doubt in my mind that we can and will continue to get through these unprecedented times. My team and I will continue to take these challenges head-on, and continue to grow in order to better serve, and we look forward to the year ahead of us! Best,

I Believe Campaign Helps Local Donors Support Alliance FFA

Alliance FFA has participated in the I Believe in the Future of Ag campaign for several years as a way to receive donations from local donors and also receive matching funds from corporate sponsors.

In 2020-21, the chapter plans to use their donations to send FFA members to the Washington Leadership Conference and to the Nebraska FFA State Convention. You too can donate to any chapter in Nebraska like Alliance FFA through the I Believe in the Future of Ag campaign. All of your donation will be sent back to the designated chapter at the end of the campaign and a portion of the matching funds will be distributed proportionately to participating chapters.

Ashtyn Vivion, Alliance FFA Advisor, said, “We participate in the I Believe program because we see it as a great opportunity for businesses and individuals in our community to invest in our program. The program allows these donors to provide a tax-deductible donation to the chapter, and on top of that the added matching funds help to increase the impact of their donation. This program provides us funds that allow for our members to gain opportunities they otherwise would have to pay for out of pocket.

Hartington-Newcastle FFA Members Claim 2 of 3 Proficiency Finalist Awards at the State Level

Sara Burbach, 1st Place Dairy Production Placement proficiency

Carter Klug, 3rd Place Dairy Production Placement proficiency

Proficiency awards recognize the development of technical knowledge and skills that students develop through their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. Students compete in over 50 categories at the chapter, district, state and national levels.

added, “I have learned the true value of work by working side by side with my dad and brothers. Getting hands on experience is my favorite part, being able to fix the equipment that is so essential to keep the farm running.”

This year, at the state level for the Dairy Production Placement proficiency, the Hartington-Newcastle FFA Chapter took home two out of the top three finalist awards with 1st place going to Sara Burbach and 3rd place to Carter Klug. Dairy farming was built into both Burbach and Klug’s lifestyle. They both grew up on dairy farms in the Hartington area and work on them with their families.

Both students also praised their FFA Advisor, Ms. Emma Lammers, for pushing them to apply for a proficiency area. “She was very helpful in completing the process,” said Burbach, “it took a lot of time to record all of our hours and finances along with coming up with descriptions for our supervised agricultural experiences.” Based on the calendar year of SAE documentation, students may begin applying for this award program during their freshman year through one year after graduation. Nebraska FFA proficiency awards are sponsored by many generous sponsors and donors.

“My favorite part of working in my proficiency area is spending time with my family. The long hours that come along with the job is hard work but rewarding to see the impact it has on my family,” said Burbach. Klug agreed and

Wilber-Clatonia and Tri County FFA Chapters Receive Bergmeyer Leadership Development Grant

Wilber-Clatonia and Tri County FFA chapters were selected to receive a total of $15,000 for the leadership development programs within their chapters. The grants were funded through a collaboration with the Nebraska FFA Foundation, the Bergmeyer Leadership Development Account within the First State Bank Nebraska Donor-Advised Fund at Nebraska Community Foundation, and through the Youth Engagement Grant opportunity available exclusively to Nebraska Community Foundation affiliated funds. The Wilber-Clatonia FFA chapter is using these funds to develop adult and elementary education modules led by the agriculture students and FFA members. Students are tasked to teach these modules to youth and community members to show them how to be more self-sufficient in food production, as well as skills needed for a safe and healthy food supply. A few education lesson presentations were able to take place at the start of the year, but have not been able to be in-person in recent months due to safety restrictions regarding the COVID-19 virus. That didn’t stop WilberClatonia! The Chapter now posts video lessons on YouTube. One example of these videos is an adult education lesson titled, “Cooking with Critters! Utilizing Insects as a Protein Source.” According to Wilber-Clatonia FFA Advisor, Dusten Bruss, the chapter plans to pick back up with additional presentations to adults and students once school starts.

2020. Unfortunately, with events such as the Nebraska FFA State Convention, Chapter Officer Leadership Training and National FFA Convention moving to a virtual format due to COVID-19, the expenses associated with these events were greatly reduced. Instead of letting their grant go to waste, Tri County FFA members came up with a new way to use the funds, making sure that the overall goal still applied to leadership programming while benefitting a larger part of the Tri County community. The chapter conducted their first annual 6th Grade Rural Safety Public Speaking contest in May. The activity was to create a safety awareness in the student’s home and community and develop oral communication skills. Students developed and presented two to four-minute speeches on safety topics ranging from “Child Care on the Farm” to “Handling Dogs Safely.” “The students submitted their presentations via video or some of the chapter officers and I would set up one on one front porch visits for in-person presentations,” explained Tri County FFA Advisor, Dave Barnard. “It was great to see the sixth graders get excited about their topics and the chapter officers get excited about serving the community! We hope to make this an annual event for our chapter.”

Tri County FFA was planning on using these funds for students to attend leadership programming events from the Nebraska FFA Association and National FFA Organization in
