Dear Friends, As we reflect on another year of support for agricultural education and FFA, we want to recognize the individuals, groups and companies that invested in the work that we do. We know that your support must be earned and want you to see firsthand how your donations are used. Nebraska FFA is reaching all-time highs with nearly 9,000 FFA members in 184 chapters. This is a nine percent increase in membership from the previous year. The Nebraska FFA Foundation is working to prepare young people to become successful adults, leaders in their communities and successful agriculture producers and business people. We are able to achieve that through your generous donations. Here are a few examples of how your support helped this past year: • Growing Leaders - Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) allows chapter officers to learn their new roles. The Nebraska FFA Foundation lowers the cost for COLT registration fees and provides a scholarship for new chapters. • Building Communities - For the first year, the Nebraska FFA Foundation offered a local chapter grant program that awarded $10,000. Each year we hope to grow the dollar amount to support more agriculture classrooms, FFA chapters, Supervised Agricultural Experiences and school-based enterprises. • Strengthening Agriculture - All 184 chapters attended State Convention to participate in career-based contests, leadership workshops and attend sessions. The Nebraska FFA Foundation received $183,000 in donations to be used towards State Convention and Association Programming. We hope for the day when we have all of the resources needed to maintain the needs of local FFA programs and the Nebraska FFA Association. There are many challenges, and your support is very critical in our work of growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. I encourage you to continue reading to find more detailed stories in each of those three areas listed above. You can rest assured that your support of the Nebraska FFA Foundation is a solid investment in the future of agriculture and the future of Nebraska. GROWING LEADERS
$10,000 Awarded Towards Local Chapter Grants Five chapters received the first Nebraska FFA Foundation local chapter grants, which were available to all chapters, members and agriculture classrooms. The focus for the grants was on classroom instruction, FFA, Supervised Agricultural Experiences and schoolbased enterprises that described a financial need, such that, without these funds, their ability to execute, develop or continue would be difficult. BLOOMING SMILES The Mead FFA Chapter started a Blooming Smiles project that involves collecting donated flowers from funerals and weddings to repurpose them as floral arrangements as random acts of kindness to community members. The $1,500 grant was used to purchase a refrigerator to hold the flower arrangements. CARDINALCAM Industries Randolph has started a school-based enterprise within their agriculture classroom called CARDINALCAM. The $1,050 grant was used to purchase a powder coating system. Through their school-based enterprise, they have designed and made a locker system for the local fire department, signs, plaques and more. GREENHOUSE Red Cloud began modernizing their agricultural classroom experience to involve a brand new greenhouse. A $5,000 grant was awarded to be used towards the greenhouse building costs. The greenhouse is being built to provide hands-on and technical skills to help students develop career ready skills in agriculture. PLANT SCIENCE CASE EQUIPMENT Holdrege began implementing Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) curriculum into their agriculture classroom to have more handson lessons. The $1,400 grant was used to purchase lab equipment that goes along with the CASE curriculum. CURRICULUM The Johnson-Brock program started in the 2017 schoolyear. Since it was their first year, they were in need of textbooks, laboratory materials and funds to rebuild a greenhouse. $1,050 was awarded through the local chapter grant program.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES
Grosserode Builds New FFA Chapter in Tilden “The curriculum makes agricultural education much more enjoyable with the day-to-day guidelines, hands-on inquiry-based learning and is aligned with core standards,” Brandon said. Since Elkhorn Valley is a new program in 2018, he didn’t have all the funds necessary to purchase CASE equipment this year. Through the Foundation and Nebraska Soybean Board grant, he was able to purchase CASE equipment for his new classroom. The CASE equipment costs around $20,000 for each category, and the Foundation and Nebraska Soybean Board were able to award the Elkhorn Valley agricultural classroom with over $8,500 to purchase the equipment.

“An opportunity to start a new program down the road from your hometown only comes along once in a lifetime,” says Brandon Grosserode.
Brandon and the Elkhorn Valley FFA chapter have already been impacted by the Foundation in many other ways. The chapter received new officer stations and some members received free FFA jackets through the Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. program. The chapter plans to attend state convention, Chapter Officer Leadership Training, Pathways to Careers Conference and participate in the I Believe in the Future of Ag campaign.
Brandon has been teaching for seven years, and this year he had the opportunity to start a new agricultural education program and FFA chapter at Elkhorn Valley Public Schools in Tilden. Brandon began his career by attending a twoyear college to receive his associates degree in agribusiness. He knew he eventually wanted to have a career in education, but didn’t know if math or agriculture would be the perfect fit for him. His parents and now wife persuaded him to try agricultural education in college for a year. After that year, he knew that agricultural education was the right choice for him.
All of these resources and opportunities have already impacted the students in just a few months. Erica Brown, Elkhorn Valley FFA member, said, “CASE has allowed us to learn about agriculture in ways we would never think, and it is making learning fun.”
After graduating, he taught at Ansley. In his second year of teaching, Lonnie Koepke, who also taught agriculture, mentioned the benefits and curriculum that CASE, Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education, offered. CASE is a professional development workshop on specific courses in agricultural that can take 50-100 hours of training. Brandon decided to enroll in the Animal Science CASE course and saw the benefits that Lonnie mentioned to him. Brandon then became CASE endorsed in Plant Science and Introduction to AFNR.

STRENGTHENING AGRICULTURE
Deunk Named American Agribusiness Star Finalist
Striving to increase yields and potentially cut costs on his family farm and for local farmers was what Aaron Deunk wanted to achieve by starting his own business. Aaron grew up on a farm near Cortland, which is 30 miles south of Lincoln, and has always known agriculture is his passion. “I’ve really enjoyed farming since I was a kid,” said Aaron. At 12 years old, he began farming by renting some acres. Then during his sophomore year at Norris High School, he decided to try something new out.

Aaron mentioned that much of the work in the classroom and in FFA programs have also contributed to the success of his business. The Farm Management Career Development Event was beneficial to him because he uses the knowledge gained from that experience today. His experience with his SAE helped him learn about record keeping, time management, maintenance, safety and new technology.
While on an auction online, he found a dry fertilizer attachment that would allow him to apply both dry fertilizer and anhydrous at the same exact time, also known as dual placement. The dry fertilizer attachment would work on what his family farm already had so he decided to see if it would really work.
Aaron’s SAE has garnered national recognition. He was recognized as an American Star Finalist in 2018 at National Convention. He also was the Nebraska Star in Agribusiness in 2017.
The attachment did work, and after his first year, he purchased his own tractor and anhydrous bar to execute more custom application and for his family farm. At 16 years old, he created his own LLC, D & D Custom Applications.
Five years from now his goal is to purchase a floater sprayer to spread dry fertilizer over the top to expand his business. He’s in college currently studying agribusiness, but hopes to return back to the farm full-time to work with his grandpa, dad and brother.
He said one benefit of the dual placement practice is the increase in yield. Aaron conducted a trial on his FFA chapter’s farm ground and found a

We all have special memories in our FFA jacket, whether it be ourselves, family or friends. The blue jacket is the main symbol of FFA nationwide. I Believe in the Future of Ag is focused on building financial capacity for the future of FFA in Nebraska. It gives us the opportunity to educate community members on the importance of agricultural education and FFA programs and raises money at both the local and state levels. The campaign spanned all of Nebraska and included two media partnerships with Husker Sports Marketing and KRVN/Rural Radio Network. Industry sponsors donated $250,000 towards the campaign. Local FFA chapter donors donated over $343,000 for their chapters and $35,000 was awarded to participating chapters in matching funds. The top I Believe chapters for 2017-18 were O’Neill, Shelby-Rising City and West Holt. Out of the 184 chapters, 113 chapters participated in the campaign.
