Dear Friends, This past year marks tremendous leadership, growth and potential for Nebraska FFA. The Nebraska FFA Association had a recording-setting year of growth. There were 159 agriculture teachers serving as FFA advisors and developing over 13,000 students in their agriculture classes for careers in agriculture, food and natural resources. Nebraska FFA membership hit an all-time high of 7,300 members in 150 FFA chapters, which ties the previous alltime high set in 1955! This also marked a banner year for the Nebraska FFA Foundation in developing new partnerships to support important leadership programs, support growth in FFA in more communities and support Nebraska’s agriculture teachers. Your gifts have impacted programming for thousands of FFA members in Nebraska from the local to statewide level. Your investment significantly reduces expenses for each FFA member and chapter to participate in these important programs. The FFA Association suggests that without support from you, FFA members would need to pay $40, instead of $8 just to attend State FFA Convention. In fact, FFA is the only career student organization in Nebraska that charges less than $40 to attend state conferences. You’re also helping to cultivate the future pipeline of employees and customers for Nebraska’s ag industry by fostering relationships and increasing connections between FFA advisors and members and Nebraska FFA Foundation corporate partners.
In 2013-14, the Nebraska FFA Foundation raised one million dollars for the first time, with over 700,000 dollars being used directly on programming. This is an all-time high directly related to the significant growth in FFA members and chapters the last few years. The Foundation has seen as steady increase in corporate giving and individual giving programs, with almost 150 corporate partners at the state level and 18 individual contributors pledging five-year commitments to Nebraska FFA through the Leadership Gift program. The Foundation also has the honor of keeping a memory alive of a former FFA member through the establishment of a memorial endowment in his honor. It’s the Foundation’s goal to help connect more individuals and families with the FFA family through long-term giving opportunities to support state and local programming. The core FFA programming–leadership development, career development events, leadership skill events– which includes over $53,000 in programming, has been 100 percent funded the past three years. Without the commitment of sponsors and donors, this would not be possible. This annual report details many of those of you who gave to Nebraska FFA and stories from the field describing the impact of the crucial support provided. We are so grateful for your support; much of the growth we are experiencing is supported by your financial contributions. Thank you for your commitment to students.

“I could have just had a basic Supervised Agricultural Experience... but it was FFA and my agriculture teacher that pushed me to want to do more,� Rice says.

Rice relies heavily on technology for cow management at Prairieland Dairy. He sits down to record vaccinations, breeding, milk production, milk quality, steps taken and conductivity to track.

FFA Pushes Ben Rice to
Do More Than Move Manure Ben Rice from the Norris FFA Chapter had quite the background in the dairy industry before even joining FFA. He was born into the dairy industry and most of his family remains working on their dairy farm today his dad, Dan, as general manager, his mom, Brenda, as secretary, and two of his three sisters. He says, “Prairieland Dairy has been a part of me ever since I was little. I never refer to my time at the dairy as ‘work’ because for me, it’s more of a way of life.” Rice says by working on the dairy, he has been given the opportunity to see a much bigger picture. His dairy production Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) rooted him in the ag industry and helped him develop a unique career pathway. This SAE helped Rice see the bigger picture of agriculture and brought out the strengths in him to see his full potential. His understanding for sustainability in ag production has grown drastically. He distinctly remembers a trip with his dad to California a few years ago. They visited various dairy farms, two of which had methane digesters which were shut down. “It really got me thinking about future goals of how to make these systems work and be profitable across many agriculture industries,” he says. Rice also manages Prairieland Gold, Prairieland Dairy’s compost operation. Rice set a goal to make Norris Public Schools a greener and more sustainable campus and he started collecting all food waste from the intermediate and middle school cafeterias and brought it back to the dairy for compost. He says Prairieland Gold receives 86% of the cafeteria waste, which is a huge impact on what was going into the landfills. In just the last two years, Rice and his brother-in-law, also an employee on the dairy, have done presentations to several organizations and businesses to start collecting more food waste for compost. They are now collecting waste from Innovation Campus and a Russ’s Market in Lincoln, several Wal-Mart stores in Omaha and a dog food plant in Crete. In January, they will add Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln to the list. Rice has also become a great advocate for the ag
industry by joining the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska (AFAN) and attending the Nebraska Agriculture Youth Institute (NAYI). He can often be spotted at local grocery stores, along with a cow and calf from the dairy, speaking to consumers and connecting them with an understanding of where their food comes from. He was awarded the Nebraska Star in Placement at the 2014 State FFA Convention. These awards recognize the best of the best among State FFA Degree recipients. Finalists for the award have mastered skills in production, finance, management and/or research. Rice has shown strength and growth in management of Prairieland Gold, his family’s dairy compost operation. He developed skills in dairy herd management, balancing feed rations and creating nutrient-rich soil amendments. His State Star application ties everything Rice has learned together into the bigger picture. He explains the simple things he has learned make a big impact on the important things. Rice says that FFA and his agriculture teachers really encouraged him to take his Supervised Agricultural Experience to the next level. “I could have just had a basic SAE. I started out just moving manure from the pad to rows,” he says. His agriculture teacher and agriculture education experience pushed him to do more. Now that Rice is serving Nebraska as a 2014 Nebraska FFA Vice President, he is encouraging more members to do the same. When he’s facilitating leadership conferences or visiting schools, he’s talking to students about their SAE and how they have the potential to do even more. In addition to serving as the State Vice President, Rice is currently attending the University of Nebraska– Lincoln with a major in Mechanized Systems Management. He wants to continue to be involved in the dairy and to work for a company that designs and builds systems like methane digesters for livestock operations to make them more sustainable.

Franklin FFA Nationally Recognized for Community and Chapter Development After thirty years of teaching at Franklin High School, Dave Rocker has his FFA chapter running like a well-oiled machine. After all, Franklin FFA, with 39 members, was named a National Chapter Model of Innovation finalist in both Chapter and Community Development at this year’s National FFA Convention. Each year, only ten FFA programs are named finalists in three different program areas–student development, chapter development and community development. This award program recognizes chapters who successfully complete an annual Program of Activities including a series of activities designed to encourage its members to work as part of a team, to serve others and to grow as individuals. Teamwork Trent Christiancy, an FFA officer, says one thing he thinks is making the biggest impact on the chapter is the pod system. “We’ve developed groups of eight to nine FFA members, along with one or two chapter officers and they all use positive teamwork to create effective leadership.” This is the third year of this system, where FFA members take responsibility for their chapter’s activities. Rocker says he tried everything. He says, “there was so much pressure, as there is in every FFA chapter, for the advisor to do it all, but it doesn’t have to be that way.” He’s seen improved leadership in the chapter officers and the members have more buy-in on the activities they are organizing. “Members and officers are working together like they should be. It’s not me asking them to help me with tasks. It’s creating responsibility in our officers to work with members to accomplish the pod’s goals,” he says. Rocker has developed a point system to encourage pod members to meet and exceed their goals. The pod with the most points will go on a day trip, which has been to Kansas City waterpark or NebraskaLand Days the last few years. Serving Others It’s clear that Franklin FFA members are taught to serve others by dedicating time and raising money for others in need.
The past two years, Franklin FFA Facts: FFA members have Location: Franklin, NE held a benefit for About 55 miles south of a local student in Kearney, NE need. During the FFA Members: 39 2013-14 school year, it was an FFA and 4-H member with a threetime reoccurring malignant brain tumor. The FFA chapter raised over $43,000 through a silent auction, T-shirt sales, free will donation lunch and by accepting monetary donations. The money would send their fellow FFA member to Boston for a lifesaving surgery. Brody Lewis, another chapter officer, says the Harlan County Lake project is one of his most enjoyable projects. He likes helping out the community and having fun with other members as well. Each year, FFA members work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make improvements at the lake. Members camp out for two nights and spend days clearing trails, making benches or even painting outhouses. The third day, members get to enjoy their hard work by taking advantage of the recreation at the lake, including some boating and swimming. Growing as Individuals “I’ve seen a lot of growth in the leadership of our officers because of the activities they’re doing and the pod system they’ve developed,” says Rocker. The officers and members in each pod take responsibility for everything, whether it’s a recruitment activity for junior high students or the “Pass the Blue & Gold Toilet Fundraiser” for the local EMT Rescue Unit. “Growing individuals is really part of everything we’re doing,” says Rocker. “Students are learning to be active in teams, take individual responsibility on specific tasks and take care of each other and the community.”

Second Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education Institute Provides More Professional Development for Teachers

2014 marked the third year of hosting the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) Institute on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus. This Institute is a professional development workshop to provide teachers training for instruction related to a specific CASE course. Once a teacher has successfully completed 80 hours (ten days) of intense professional development at a CASE Institute, the teacher is certified to teach that specific CASE course. Most Nebraska agriculture teachers apply for a scholarship sponsored by the Nebraska Soybean Board and pre-service teachers were eligible for a scholarship sponsored by the Nebraska Pork Producers Association. These scholarships provide assistance with paying for fees associated with the Institute. Stacie Turnbull attended her second CASE Institute in 2014. She is the coordinator and teacher at the Agronomy Academy, a cooperative project between Centennial, Seward and York school districts and says the Institute is valuable because it gives teachers a tool, helps teachers become learner-centered and it makes it possible for the teachers to learn along with the students. Turnbull gives the example of her biotechnology course. “Biotechnology is tough and I certainly didn’t learn it in college. The CASE training walks me through most of the labs. I get to learn right along with the kids.” She says that she also appreciates that the system builds a community of other teachers working through the same information

and they are able to help serve as a resources for each other. The very first CASE Institute Turnbull attended was in animal science. She said that by having the ability to teach this class, she was able to help students that were failing biology excel in the animal science class. The students were then able to take what they learned in the animal science class back to the biology class and use the information to better understand biology. Turnbull believes that the CASE program is extremely valuable to agricultural education because it helps teachers validate what they are teaching in the classroom. The curriculum gives her a real foundation of teaching to stand on. The Institute has allowed her to teach students new ways of understanding a subject, which makes their learning more valuable. Turnbull does note that it’s a tough two weeks packed with information and it’s tough to justify two weeks away from home in the summer, but the experience and materials you bring home are not only invaluable, but it’s also rejuvenating. She’s excited to participate in additional CASE Institutes and already plans to attend plant science next and food science the year after.

Endowment Aims to Inspire FFA Members to Find Their Potential Tony and Jane Badertscher recently funded the “Braden Badertscher ‘Power Your Potential’ Memorial Endowment.” This endowment is the first of its kind in endowing a proficiency award through the Nebraska FFA Foundation. The following was written by the Badertschers on how they witnessed FFA’s impact on their son Braden:

Our son, Braden, always had a love for agriculture. His first toys were John Deere tractors and his favorite place to be was at the farm. Braden loved to play in the dirt and help his dad and grandpa “fix” things. As he headed into his Freshman year in high school, he got the opportunity to join FFA. Joining FFA was one of the best things that happened to Braden. He really enjoyed his ag classes and was so excited to be an active member of the Holdrege chapter. FFA helped him to grow in so many ways. He gained confidence, became comfortable with public speaking, and his leadership skills developed. For his SAE project, he chose to restore an old John Deere tractor. How ironic that the “little toys” he enjoyed playing with would eventually earn him a Bronze award in Ag Mechanics Repair and Maintenance–Placement at National FFA Convention. On top of everything that he learned from FFA, it was

also one of the things he leaned on to bring normalcy to his life when he was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout chemotherapy treatments, the FFA meetings, projects, and assignments helped to give him something positive to focus on instead of all the bad that was happening. When you are a member of FFA, you become part of that family. The Holdrege FFA chapter and advisor became part of Braden’s “family” and was a HUGE support system throughout his illness. After his death, we realized just how much of an impact FFA had on Braden. It was also amazing to learn how much of an impact Braden had on other members of FFA – not only in Holdrege, but throughout the state. Our family decided it was important to continue to develop Braden’s passion for agriculture. We can only hope that this small gift will help others to discover their potential, and that Braden’s memory will live on through their involvement in FFA.

Fall 2013 Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. Donors The blue jacket is the main symbol of FFA nationwide – the jacket that so many young FFA members wear so proudly. The Nebraska FFA Foundation is proud to support those deserving students by providing the Blue Jackets. Bright Futures. program. Contributors could elect to be a part of the 2013 program by donating $80 per student they wish to support. Students must apply to be selected for an FFA jacket and, for many, this is one of their first experiences as an FFA member. In the fall of 2013, over 330 applications were received and 208 students were awarded a new FFA jacket and a tie or scarf. I Believe in the Future of Ag I Believe in the Future of Ag is a fundraising campaign focused on building capacity for the future of FFA in Nebraska. It gives us the opportunity to educate community members on the importance of agricultural education and FFA programs and to raise money at both the local and state levels. The 2013-14 campaign was held from October 1, 2013 through February 28, 2014. This was the second year the campaign was a statewide effort and included a media partnership with Husker Sports Marketing. In addition, this was the first year of a media partnership with Nebraska Radio Network. Nineteen corporate partners contributed a total of $230,000 to the campaign. Local FFA chapters raised almost $200,000 for their chapters and $24,000 was awarded out to participating chapters as matching funds.

FFA & 4-H Golf Classic Each year, a golf tournament is held in conjunction with the Nebraska 4-H Foundation. The 2014 Golf Classic was held at Indian Creek Golf Course in Omaha. All funds are split equally between the Nebraska FFA Foundation and Nebraska 4-H Foundation. In 2014, the Nebraska FFA Foundation received just over $11,000 from the event.
