Join us as our Grade 10 students present the IB MYP Personal Project Exhibition Personal project is a culmination of 5 years of IB middle year program (MYP).The personal project provides an opportunity for students to undertake an independent and age-appropriate exploration into an area of personal interest. Through the process of inquiry, action and reflection, students are encouraged to demonstrate and strengthen their ATL skills. Personal project prepares the students for the IB DP programme by making them self-directed learner ,efficient communicators, researcher which provides them

with the necessary skill required for the DP extended essay (EE) as well.

The personal nature of the project is important; the project allows students to explore an area that motivates and interests them. Students choose what they want to focus on, which can be an existing or a new interest, choose how to achieve their goal, and create their own success criteria for the product. The project provides an excellent opportunity for students to produce a truly personal and often creative product and to demonstrate a consolidation of their learning in the MYP. The personal project provides students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate ATL skills developed through the MYP and to foster the development of independent, lifelong learning. The independent nature of the project equips students to pursue meaningful goals in life, education and the workplace.

Chitrakale A tribute to Mysore’s legacy in 24 carats

As someone who is highly inclined towards visual arts and has experimented with multiple contemporary styles, I thought it would be a new and interesting experience to learn a more traditional style. The style I chose to base my project on is Mysore painting, an art style that is often mistaken for the better-known Tanjore art, both of which are traditional South Indian art forms.

The reason for choosing Mysore painting is that my dad has a vast collection of Mysore paintings, each with interesting backgrounds and significant themes related to Mysore culture. Mysore painting holds great significance in my family, and pursuing the learning of Mysore painting as my personal project allowed me to delve deeper and better understand my family’s traditions and history.

Erikson’s ‘Psychosocial Theory of Life’ holds significance in the field of developmental psychology, which is the area I plan to study in the future.

Deciding to study something in this field was an immediate choice for me when the Personal Project was launched because I’ve been interested in the subject since I was in 4th grade, and this project provided me with the opportunity to pursue that interest. The incident that initially sparked my interest in the field of psychology stems from a conversation I had with a friend who mentioned someone she knew was going to a therapist. Although she explained the concept to me, I remained curious. This prompted me to go home and research it further. As I learned more about it and the subject itself, I realized it was something I was genuinely interested in and wanted to explore further. Additionally, I chose to include an art exhibition because I aim to gain insights into event planning and the logistics involved in organizing an event.

Hari Hara: A Kerala painting on greed

By choosing this project, I was able to delve into the world of fusion and explore how combining the cultures of Karnataka and Kerala would impact both me and the audience. When I explored the art of fusion last year in my MYP music subject, I learned that the arts have a means of transcending boundaries and building bridges between two varied cultures while recognizing their similarities and simultaneously celebrating their differences. One thing I really admired is that when artists draw inspiration from various cultural traditions, they contribute to a global tapestry of shared human experiences. This combination of different artistic elements allows for the creation of unique and innovative works that transcend cultural boundaries.

Ultimately, this fusion piece aims to celebrate and highlight the diversity of art and the lengths we could go to achieve harmony in our communities.

Choosing this project was a logical step as my involvement in art-related activities strengthened my interest and self-exploration. I realized my inclination towards realism, rooted in my love for organization and, thus, attention to detail. People often associate me with sketching individuals in classes, and capturing these raw moments sparked my interest in portraiture and achieving realism. Embracing oil paints marked a significant shift, challenging my comfort zone. This choice reflects my commitment to overcoming challenges and refining my skills.

The extended drying time of oil paints aligns with my need for continuous improvement, making it a practical choice for my artistic journey. Lastly, I found my learning style to be more of a visual learner, and the concept of visual communication intrigued me. I wanted to explore such concepts through this project. My interest in this project stems from my relationship with my uncle. He was an artist who loved expressing himself through artistic endeavors. Despite being a wonderful artist, my uncle also suffered from the mental disorder, “Schizophrenia.” His experiences with schizophrenia left a lasting impact on me, driving me to seek a deeper comprehension of what schizophrenia entails.

Art has always been a subject that I was interested in, with art workshops since I was 7 years old, art classes in my apartment since 3rd grade, and participation in several art competitions. Art has always been a part of my life and still is.

I’ve also chosen art in school over music and drama. Throughout the years, I’ve learned several different art mediums, such as acrylics and watercolors, in which I’ve honed my skills. I now have one final goal: to gain more knowledge about the other art mediums present in our world by creating a series of artworks. I will be representing psychological disorders through these artworks, helping me form an understanding of a subject that I want to pursue in the future—Psychology.

On the academic side of the spectrum, I’ve always had a love for Physics, which began with simple science experiments with my father and grew into an eventual passion for the subject in high school.

Therefore, I knew that Personal Project could be a way for me to express my love for both subjects by combining them. Since I’ve always wanted to delve deeper into the field of quantum physics but never had the time to do so, I decided that this could be a way to demystify one of the most interesting branches of Physics, in my opinion. Also, despite watching numerous musicals, I never really understood the creative process. I felt that by doing this project, not only could I satiate my curiosity, but I could also see if either of these fields was something I would want to pursue as a possible career.

I selected this topic because of my profound interest in music and literature, which I aspire to pursue in the future. My passion for music and literature has motivated me to explore various opportunities and experiences, ranging from organizing concerts to publishing my written works. My musical journey commenced at the age of 7 when I began training in Hindustani classical vocals. Over the years, I have planned, organized, and successfully executed my own concerts. Writing songs has been a pastime since my childhood, and as I matured, it evolved into a means of escaping and processing emotions. Hence, this Personal Project.

For nearly a decade, music has held a prominent place in my life. Whether through vocals, playing the piano, or simply listening, music has served as a guiding force, leading me to explore new experiences and opportunities. Having developed an interest in marketing over the past few years, the fusion of these two concepts presented the ideal collaboration of seemingly opposite aspects of my life. I chose to express my understanding of this interdisciplinary topic through the creation of a documentary—a convergence of audio-visual narratives, representing a form of medium that I found particularly challenging. Through the challenges and new insights presented by this project, I have discovered fresh avenues to pursue and a deeper appreciation for my passions.

This format will enable me to unravel the intricacies of fusion music through the perspectives of artists who have actively played and produced music.

Learning the ‘Bass’ics - My Journey into the World of Bass Guitar

The bass guitar, often overshadowed by its six-stringed counterpart, plays a crucial role in any musical ensemble. It contributes to defining a piece’s harmonic and rhythmic qualities. As a drummer, I have always been intrigued by the pivotal role of the bass, considering both instruments form the foundation of any band.

Additionally, I aimed to acquire skills in recording and audio mastering to capture and share my performances comprehensively. I integrated all these elements into a personal project focused on learning the bass guitar, along with recording, mixing, and mastering, to create high-quality covers of songs. This undertaking has transformed me into a well-rounded musician, fostering greater self-direction in my musical explorations. As I progress on my musical journey, I am confident that the experience gained from this personal project will lay a solid foundation for success in other musical ventures.

My passion for coffee extends beyond just drinking it, finding expression in the diverse flavors and the art of brewing. With privileged access to entrepreneurs in the coffee industry through my father, who co-founded a cafe named Nerlu, I conducted research to deepen my knowledge on sectors such as harvesting, processing, roasting, and brewing. Fueled by my passion and the resources at my disposal, I was motivated to share the knowledge I had gained with other enthusiasts. My goal was to impart my audience with insights into the journey of a coffee bean and how each step impacts the diverse flavors of the final product.

Through my workshop, I explored and shared my knowledge about the nuances of specialty coffee and its intricacies.

From an early age, my affinity for business became evident when I attempted to sell my drawings at the age of seven. This early entrepreneurial spirit has since evolved into the establishment of my cookie business, Macha’s Bakery.

The decision to align the personal project with my business is strategic, recognizing the opportunity to leverage this project for skill expansion that directly benefits what I’m passionate about—Macha’s Bakery. This evaluative choice stems from the belief that continuous learning is essential for sustained growth.

In the realm of my business, I have engaged with various components such as customer service, product development, and branding. Through this engagement, I realized that my current knowledge gap predominantly lies in marketing, hindering the growth potential of my business.

Finance Foundation - Theory To Practice

Since my youth, my family elders have consistently shared with me this Hindi phrase: “Bade hokar bahut pesa kamakar khush hojana,” which translates to ‘grow older and make a lot of money to be happy.’ While I still contemplate the truth of this phrase, I am convinced that happiness without money is like flying an airplane without enough fuel; it soon runs out and comes crashing down.

This interest in understanding finance also stems from numerous take-yourchild-to-work days at my dad’s company and interactions with major financial planners as a young mind. These experiences ignited my intrigue in finance, which has evolved over time into a significant passion and a likely career path.

Growing up surrounded by a family of business professionals, I was immersed in the corporate world from a young age, constantly hearing captivating stories about my parents’ professional lives. Despite being exposed to these narratives, the intricate workings of business, particularly the creation and scaling of enterprises, remained a mystery to me. I found myself pondering the disparities between a local street shop and giants like Tesla or Amazon. Was there a significant difference? To unravel these questions, I embarked on a journey into the realms of business, entrepreneurship, and startups. As my curiosity deepened, it dawned on me that a lack of interactive, easily comprehensible, and informative resources hindered many young minds from grasping the fundamentals of businesses. This realization became the catalyst for a unique opportunity. I seized the moment to craft a guidebook tailored for students eager to explore the captivating world of startups and businesses but unsure of where to start.

My fascination with the universe and its workings sprouted as I watched the first episode of ‘Cosmos’ by Carl Sagan. It sparked my curiosity, leading me to question the workings of the universe and igniting my passion to study and explore the answers. Since then, I have continuously been intrigued by the realms of outer space and how it functions. This is why I chose my personal project to mirror how I discovered my deep-rooted interest in astrophysics—a video series discussing the four popular and interesting theories of our universe: The Big Bang theory, the multiverse theory, the steady-state and static theory, and the cyclic theory.

An Aerial Odyssey - Unravelling the science behind bird migration

Since my childhood, I harboured the curiosity of a naturalist, spending my best moments in the forest with binoculars, immersed in the deeply meditative act of spotting wildlife. While my initial interests leaned towards herpetology and ancient sauropods, a transformative shift occurred during my recent holidays in the Nilgiri biosphere. Chance encounters with avid bird enthusiasts and the babbling of a barbet outside my window possibly ignited this new fascination for these feathered creatures.

Questions about their anatomy, flight mechanics, vision, and the enigma of migration intrigued me. How could a creature the size of my palm travel vast distances or navigate precise paths? What compelled them to embark on perilous journeys, fraught with danger? These inquiries drove me to initiate a Personal Project, a dedication to my great-grandfather, the wilderness explorer who once returned cradling bear cubs after months in the wild.

Motivated to share my discoveries, I chose the medium of video – a dynamic, interactive format that could engage individuals of my age. The culmination is a 4-part video series exploring the physics of bird flight and a comprehensive crash course on migration. In this endeavor, I strive to unravel the mysteries of these aerial acrobats and pay homage to the legacy of the naturalist in my family.

I have always been intrigued by biology, from exploring microbiology in my Eureka! science project to a biotechnology internship that introduced me to clinical trials. However, after experiencing a worldwide pandemic firsthand, I realized my own ignorance regarding the science behind the basic functioning of my immune system and different types of vaccines. I discovered that, although the pandemic was a period of tragedy, it was also a time of hope, provoking unprecedented development that led to the fastest-developed vaccine in history. It was possibly one of humankind’s greatest accomplishments, and I knew it was definitely worth investigating and spreading awareness about.

My most cherished memories are the days I spent running around my grandparents’ house as my grandmother worked her magic in the kitchen.

Unfortunately, she has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for the past few years, and I have witnessed her struggle to lead a more comfortable life. This prompted me to delve into the basics of arthritis, and my interest was piqued. I proceeded to comprehend the intricacies of rheumatoid arthritis, gaining insight into my grandmother’s daily challenges. With this project, I aim to document my grandmother’s struggles and coping journey while providing a basic understanding of the disease from a medical perspective.

Drawing from these personal experiences, I was driven to develop a product (an amateur training guide) that not only addresses prevalent injuries but also incorporates a unique perspective and empathetic approach. By sharing my firsthand knowledge, I aimed to assist others on their recovery journeys, offering a combination of practical solutions and emotional support to enhance their overall well-being during the rehabilitation process.

My choice of this project stemmed from an interest in gardening and plants, as well as my fond memories of frequent visits to my grandfather’s house in the Western Ghats. I’ve always wanted to recreate a small piece of the vast expanse of nature I experienced there in my own home. However, I often felt that I didn’t have the time, resources, or knowledge required to sustain gardening as a hobby, especially in a small space like an apartment.

Therefore I decided to use the Personal Project as an opportunity to learn about gardening and to help others who might have found themselves in my situation. I aimed to create a resource that outlines all the basic knowledge one needs to start a garden in a small space, making gardening more accessible and enjoyable for individuals with limited resources or space.

The topic I chose for my Personal Project journey is “Sustainable Traditional Japanese Individual House.” Sustainability is the key to a greener and healthier future. Living in an apartment surrounded by ongoing construction activities in the vicinity has prompted me to ponder the process architects follow to develop architectural projects. Drawing from my prior knowledge on urbanization, I have uncovered the environmental impact of existing construction methods, contributing to pollution in urban areas. I aspired to broaden my horizons and step out of my comfort zone, realizing almost immediately that writing was the perfect option for my product. This posed a significant challenge for an individual (me) who dislikes writing with all his soul.

And so, my long-standing interest in psychology and neuroscience, coupled with my observations of my sleep schedule and its visible impacts on myself, led to the ideation and creation of a collection of literary works. The collection comprises four short stories set in dystopian settings, aiming to narrate tales related to sleep with the goal of creating awareness, especially for adolescents, through a creative medium.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always had an interest in creation. I often spent time repurposing junk materials around the house as toys for myself, exploring the range of things I could make with only the resources of time and a few cardboard boxes and other miscellaneous items. With this project, I aimed to reignite an old childhood passion and learn about the art of design and creation in a more formal setting. This time, I wanted to create a toy that was not meant for myself, pushing me out of my comfort zone for the first time. I wished to create a toy for the blind because I decided to make as meaningful an impact as possible by choosing an audience with a consequential problem to tackle.

From my earliest memories, the world of cars has been a source of endless fascination for me. The sleek designs, the hum of engines, and the thrill of speed have always captured my imagination. So, as soon as this personal project was launched, I saw it as a golden opportunity to turn my childhood passion into a hands-on project. Creating a remote-controlled car isn’t just a project for me; it’s a chance to breathe life into my love for cars. Since a very young age, I have loved fashion and enjoyed experimenting with different styles. Dressing up in my older sister’s clothes and creating new outfits with my cousin, turning towels and dupattas into fashion statements, became our playful obsession during sleepovers. I even participated in a fashion show as part of a Diwali function once. While I was excited to participate, my smile always turned upside down when I found out I had to wear a saree. Even when I was younger, I would hate wearing ethnic wear as I found it quite uncomfortable.

Now, as I grow older, I’m learning a lot more about Indian fashion culture and its influence, and I want to explore and understand more about fashion in my own culture, delving deeper into that aspect of fashion. This sustained interest along with my other passion -- Bollywood -- is what led to my Personal Project.

I have created a short animated film titled “Beyond the Strings,” exploring themes of freewill and individuality within a rigged and oppressive system. The film falls into the dystopian genre, aiming for a narrative that is both heart-felt and thoughtprovoking. Through this project, my goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of societal conditioning and the suppression of consciousness, emphasizing the pursuit of true liberation. The theme is one that is close to my heart, and animation is something that I always wished to explore. Hence, this Personal Project.

I have always been inclined to question the mechanics of things, and as I delved into TV shows featuring adolescent addictions, I observed the real-life manifestations of these habits around me. This prompted constant curiosity about how such habits form and why they are challenging to break. Both inside and outside school, I’ve encountered various types of addictions, leading me to recognize the intricate nature of this issue. My interest intensified, particularly after learning about a close friend’s family struggle with addiction.

I decided to explore this subject because I have always wanted to design and build better paper aeroplanes. I have never done a lot of research on the physics of aeroplanes in the past and I saw this as an opportunity to investigate the factors; the investigation also aligns with my future goals in university.

Knowing how to control and manipulate the flow rate of a fluid is of valuable knowledge in fields such as aerospace, medicine, agriculture, and sewerage. I chose to investigate and study the flow rate of a liquid to improve my limited profiency in the physics lab and further my understanding of what is a very important field (fluid dynamics) today.

I chose to investigate the relevance of Body Mass Index (BMI) as a health indicator due to the rising incidence of lifestyle diseases such as Type II diabetes and heart attacks. My concern lies in BMI’s lack of nuance in medical diagnoses, an issue that is particularly evident in India, where the diverse ethnic backgrounds are not accounted for in standard BMI calculations. This lack of specificity in health metrics is compounded by a scarcity of research within the Indian subcontinent. I wanted to investigate this because it came out of a much more complicated exploration into space filling curves. While I was trying to understand this thing which was far more complicated than anything I had done before, I realised that the definitions we had of concepts like dimensions were extremely deceptive and far deeper than people think.

Therefore, I tried to make my extended essay about the understanding of “Hausdorff dimensions” and genuinely tried to apply it in order to better communicate it to people.

I wanted to explore this topic because it allows me to explore a sociological topic something that I am greatly interested in - using mathematical methods and tools. It also allowed me to explore a well-researched topic with my own modifications.
