તેઓ રાયપુર દરવા બહાર ખડાયતા બો ડગમાં રહતા. એમને િચ ો દોરવાનો શોખ તો હતો જ. એવામાં એમને ખબર પડી ક ણીતા િચ કાર રિવશંકર રાવળ આ જ શહરમાં રહ છ એટલે એ પોતાનાં િશખાઉ ભૂિમકાનાં િચ ો લઈને રિવશંકર રાવળને મ યા. રિવશંકર ખૂબ સ થયા. એ વખતે સોમાલાલનાં એ િચ ોમાંની રખાઓ ભલે રિવશંકરને નબળી જણાઈ પણ તેઓ તેમની રગાવટ (કલર-સે સ) ઈ ભાિવત થયેલા. આ ભાવ પર પર બંનેએ અનુભ યો. રિવશંકરથી ભાિવત સોમાલાલે ગુજરાત કૉલેજનો અ યાસ મા એક વષ પૂ ં કરીને પડતો મૂ યો અને 1925માં મુંબઈ ગયા અને સર જે. જે. કલ ઑ આટમાં કલાના િવ ાથ બની ગયા; પરતુ યાં પણ એક જ વષમાં તે એ કૉલેજની ક પનાશૂ ય ઢ િશ ણપ િતથી ાસી ગયા અને 1926માં અમદાવાદ આવી ગયા. દરિમયાન વડોદરાની ઑ રયે ટલ કૉ ફર સના કલા-િવભાગના અ ય પદથી કલાિવવેચક કલે ટર નાનાલાલ ચમનલાલ મહતાએ આપેલા યા યાનથી ભાિવત થઈ યાંના રાજવી સયા રાવ ગાયકવાડે યાંના કલાભવનમાં ભારતીય કલાનું િશ ણ દાખલ થાય એવો સંક પ હર કય . પ રણામે ડૉ. જેઇ સ કિઝ સની ભલામણથી િવશાખાપ ણમની કલાશાળાના આચાય મોદકમાર ચ ોપા યાય કલાનું િશ ણ આપવા વડોદરા આવી પહ યા. પરતુ વડોદરામાં દાઝે બળતા ઈ યાળુઓએ એવી હવા ફલાવી ક મોદકમાર તો યુરોપી ણાલીના છાયા અને કાશ, પ પ ટવ આ દનો અ યાસ ભુલાવી કલા-િવ ાથ ઓને ઊંધે ર તે વાળશે ! તેથી મોદકમારને કોઈ િશ ય વડોદરામાં મ યો નિહ ! અંતે થાક ને વડોદરાના મહારા એ
બંગાળ-શૈલીમાં રગો અને રખાઓ વડે તા શ કરનાર િસ િચ કાર. શસ ત અને ઊંચાઈ ધરાવતો સૈા ય યિ વ િચ કાર સોમાલાલે ગુજરાતના ામસમાજનું અ યંત વંત અને આબે બ આલેખન કયુ છ. ઔ ોિગક સં કિતનો ભાવ ગુજરાતમાં વીસમી સદીમાં સય તે અગાઉના ગુજરાતના કિષ વનના ઉ સવો, રોિજંદી િવિધઓ, મનો મિહમા તથા વનના આનંદનું તેમણે તેમનાં િચ ોમાં બંગાળ-શૈલીમાં સુપેર આલેખન કયુ છ. સોમાલાલે 1924માં મૅિ કની પરી ા પસાર કરી. આ પછી તેમના પ રવાર તેમને િવનયન શાખામાં ાતક થવા માટ અમદાવાદની ણીતી ગુજરાત કૉલેજમાં મોકલી આ યા. અમદાવાદમાં

ઑ ઑ રયે ટલ આટમાં િવ ાથ બ યા અને બંગાળ-શૈલીના ણીતા િચ કાર િ તી નાથ મજમુદારના િશ ય બ યા. 1928થી 1929 સુધીના એક વરસના આ અ યાસ દરિમયાન તેઓ અવારનવાર શાંિતિનકતન જઈ અવની નાથ ટાગોરને પણ મળતા અને તેમને પણ તેઓ પોતાનાં િચ ો બતાવતા રહતા. અહ એક જ વરસમાં િશ ણ પૂ ં થયું. મુંબઈમાં ભ ય કાર કદ ઘડવાનું વ સોમાલાલે સેવેલું; પરતુ કલાગુ રિવશંકર તેમને માટ કઈક જુદું જ િવચારી રાખેલું. ગાંધી ના અં યોદય અને ામો થાનના િવચારોથી ભાિવત રિવશંકર સોમાલાલને ભાવનગર ખાતેની િશ ણસં થા ‘દિ ણામૂિત’માં કલાિશ ક તરીક ગોઠ યા અને આ રીતે નાનાભાઈ ભ ને એક મજબૂત ખભો પૂરો પા ો. સમાજનો છ ો માણસ સમ શક તેવાં કલા અને સાિહ ય સજવાં ઈએ એવી ગાંધી ની ભાવના અને હાકલ સોમાલાલે હવે પોતાના વનમાં ઉતારી. ધાિમક, પૌરાિણક, આ યા મક અને ઐિતહાિસક િવષયોને િતલાંજિલ આપી સોમાલાલે ગુજરાતના ામીણ અને કિષસમાજના રોિજંદા વનને જ પોતાની િચ કલાનો એકમા િવષય બના યો. પિત માટ ભાથું લઈ ખેતર જતી ખેડુપ ી, પિનહારી, ધોબણો, ખેતમજૂરોની બપોરની વામક ી, મજૂરણો, કાિછયણો, વાંસળી વગાડતાં ગોપબાળકો, ભરવાડો, માલધારીઓ, ભરતગૂંથણ ક રસોઈમાં ય ત િહણીઓ, બાળકને રમાડતી ક ધવડાવતી યુવાન માતાઓ તેમનાં િચ ોમાં અવારનવાર નજર પડે છ. દિ ણામૂિતમાં પંદર વરસ સુધી કલાિશ ણ
િનરાશાના સૂરમાં રિવશંકરને પ લખીને કોઈ યો ય કલાિવ ાથ મોકલવા સૂચ યું. રિવશંકર પોતે મોદકમારનાં િચ ોથી ખૂબ ભાિવત હતા. મોદકમાર હક કતમાં કલાગુ અવની નાથ ટાગોર પાસે નિહ, પણ કોલકાતાની ગવ મ ટ કલ ઑ આટના આચાય પસ ાઉન હઠળ યુરોિપયન શૈલીમાં તાલીમ પામેલા; તેમ છતાં ણાલીગત ભારતીય કલામાં તેમની ઊંડી સૂઝ અને હથોટી બેય હતાં. આ બાજુ સોમાલાલ મુંબઈની આટ કૉલેજથી ઉબાઈ ગયા હતા, તેથી રિવશંકર સોમાલાલ શાહ અને ક ણલાલ ભ ને મોદકમારના િશ યો તરીક વડોદરા મોકલી આ યા. 1926થી 1928 સુધી એમ બે વરસ મોદકમાર પાસે સોમાલાલે િચ કલાનો અ યાસ કય , પણ પછી મોદકમારને િવશાખાપ ણ પાછા જવું પ ું. તેથી કલાનો અ યાસ પૂરો કરવા સોમાલાલ કોલકાતા ખાતેની કલાશાળા સોસાયટી Mukhote Artists Group

આ યા પછી 1944માં સોમાલાલ શાહ ભાવનગરની આ ડ હાઈ કલમાં કલાિશ ક તરીક ડાયા. અહ પણ સોળ વરસ સુધી ફરજ બ યા પછી 1960માં તેઓ િન થયા. ભાવનગરમાં તેમણે બે કલાિવ ાથ ઓમાં મહ વાકાં ાને અંક રત કરી : ખોડીદાસ પરમાર અને યોિત ભ . આ બંને િવ ાથ ઓએ પણ આગળ જતાં કલા ે ે ગુજરાતનું નામ રોશન કયુ. િન થયા બાદ 1960માં સોમાલાલ શાહ અમદાવાદમાં થર થયા; એમણે પાલડી િવ તારમાં ઘર લીધેલું. 1960થી ગુજરાતની કલામાં વેશેલી આધુિનકતાથી સોમાલાલ કદી ફસાયેલા નિહ, આધુિનકતાથી તે લેશમા પણ અં યેલા નિહ; કારણ ક તેમનું આંતરદશન સાવ સાફ હતું. અમદાવાદમાં િવતાવેલા િન િ કાળમાં પણ તેમનું િચ સજન ચાલુ હતું. વૉશ ટ ીક તેમને અિત યારી હતી : ભીના કાગળ ઉપર પ છીથી રગોનું લેપન કર અને પછી તે સુકાય એટલે તે કાગળને પાણીની ડોલમાં ડુબાડે, થોડી વાર કાગળ બહાર કાઢી ફરી રગોનું લેપન કર, તે સુકાય એટલે ફરી તેને પાણીમાં ડુબાડે. સંતોષ કારક પ રણામ મળ યાં સુધી તે આમ કયા કર. વીણાનો ગ : ગુજરાતના ણીતા સામિયક ‘જનક યાણ’ના પૂંઠા ઉપર વષ સુધી સોમાલાલનાં સુંદર િચ ો છપાતાં રહલાં. આ રીતે તેમની કલા ગુજરાતના બહોળા જનસમુદાયને સહલાઈથી સુલભ થઈ હતી. ભાવનગરના મહારા માટ સોમાલાલે ‘સૌરા અને ક છનાં પંખીઓ’ નામની િચ ેણી ચીતરલી. પછીથી તેમણે ‘ગુજરાતનાં પંખીઓ’ Mukhote Artists Group
અને ‘ગુજરાતનાં ાણીઓ’ નામની બે િચ ેણીઓ પણ ચીતરી. આ છ ી બે િચ ેણીઓને છાપેલાં રગીન આલબમો તરીક ગુજરાત સરકાર 1961માં કાિશત કરલી. 1949માં સોમાલાલને રણિજતરામ સુવણચં ક મળલો. 1984માં અમદાવાદ યુિનિસપલ કૉપ રશને તેમનું સ માન કરલું. 1969માં તેમનાં િચ ોનાં વૈયિ ક દશનો વડોદરા અને મુંબઈમાં યો યેલાં. 1977 અને 1983માં તેમણે અમે રકાનો વાસ કરલો. ગુજરાત રા ય લિલત કલા અકાદમીએ 1968માં ગૌરવ પુર કાર વડે તેમનું સ માન કરલું અને ગુજરાત સરકાર 1989માં િપયા એક લાખની રકમ સાથે ‘રિવશંકર રાવળ િખતાબ’ વડે તેમને નવાજેલા. અિમતાભ મ ડયા

By - Esther David Long bony fingers, a sharp observant eye and a passion for colours, is how one can describe Gujarat's renowned ar st Somalal Shah. Born in Kapadvanj and driven by a strong desire to become a painter, he travelled all over India, searching for an idiom of expression, which would nurture his crea vity. As one studies Somalal Shah's life, it is evident that he was a traveller in the world of art, which was then just opening its doors to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Calcu a and Chennai To quote from Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali, the young Somalal must have felt like this - "The same stream of life that runs through my veins night and day, runs through the world and dances in rhy thmic measures." But, with meager financial resources, he had to snuff out his dreams and sa sfy himself by copying the oleographs of Raja Ravi Varma and other pain ngs, which appeared in art magazines like BIBY's annual art journals, which he collected. In these magazines, for the first me, Somalal saw the works of Renaissance masters like Raphael, Rosse , Bo celli, Rembrandt and Vermeer. He was fascinated by the sepia tones and the play of light and shadows on the full bodied human figures. He tried out Mukhote Artists Group
these techniques in his own pain ngs using forms of sadhus and tribals. Somalal Shah was also influenced by Indian miniature pain ng and the Bengal revivalist movement and knew the direc on he was to take in the future. Instead of heavy oil colours and sepia tones, he preferred the wash technique methods of water colours used by painters of the Bengal revivalist movement. Somalal was impressed by the pain ngs of Nandlal Bose and Abanindranath Tagore. He was fascinated that Indian subjects could be executed with Japanese brushwork and water colour techniques, used in Kalighat pain ngs.

During this period, both Abanindranath and Gagendranath Tagore had also formed the Society of Oriental Art in Calcu a. Somalal Shah was fascinated with the concept of merging Indian and European techniques and crea ng a style of his own. So, in his pain ngs, he tried to fuse both the Renaissance techniques and Raja Ravi Varma's choice of subjects. He made brave efforts of crea ng a dream-like atmosphere similar to pain ngs of the Bengal revivalist movement, which were embellished with colours of the Renaissance masters. This influence can be seen in Somalal Shah's pain ngs of this period, like his folk singers and mendicants. Later, at an Yuvak Mandal exhibi on at Umreth, he was enthused when he received a silver medal for his pain ng tled "Paniwalli." Somalal Shah was a roman c at heart, he wrote poetry and enjoyed illustra ng verses by Rabindranath Tagore, Hariharshad Dhruv and Kalapi. Later, when Somalal Shah decided to finish his gradua on in Ahmedabad, he o en visited Kalaguru Ravishanker Raval's Gujarat Chitra Kala Sangh, seeking advise about art ma ers. Ravishanker Raval encouraged Somalal as he saw that the young man had the makings of a great colourist Mukhote Artists Group
and advised him to study art. Somalal Shah joined Mumbai's Sir.J.J.School of Art, but for a short period as he did not enjoy pain ng in the Bri sh academic style. During this period, he would paint in class according to the expecta ons of his teachers, but when he returned to his hostel room, he painted in his own style, using water colours and Indian subjects. During this rather frenzied art ac vity, Somalal created 32 water colour pain ngs on subjects like, " Jeevan Sandhya and PashuPrem." Rather distraught, Somalal returned to Kapadvanj where he exhibited his work at the Sahitya Parishad's art unit and won a gold medal for his pain ng, "Prabhucharne." When Ravishanker

Raval saw these pain ngs, he advised Somalal to study water colour techniques under the guidance of Promodkumar Cha opadhyaya, a well known ar st of Vadodara. He also suggested that he study pain ng at San niketan to polish his skills. Around this me, Somalal had befriended the flamboyant ar st Kanu Desai, who had told him about the ar s c atmosphere at San niketan. Somalal's search for the ideal place for art educa on con nued, and again, he undertook a journey to San niketan. Here, he was impressed by the works of Abanindranath and Gagendranath Tagore and studied art at the Indian Society of Oriental Arts, where he painted "Nav-vadhu, Khedut-Dampa , Buddha and VasantAgaman." Soon Somalal realized that he was unable to afford the cost of living and decided to return back to Gujarat. But, as he wanted to stay there for a while and see the beau ful Durga Puja celebra ons. His finances were low and to supplement his income, he made some text book illustra ons for his mentor Champshibhai Udeshi. A er Durga Puja and on his return to Gujarat, Somalal Shah started looking for work. He made another trip to Mumbai, but soon returned back home to Kapadvanj. This was when Mukhote Artists Group
Ravishanker Raval advised him to work as an art teacher at the Dakshinamurthy school in Bhavnagar It is interes ng to note here, that R a v i s h a n ke r R a v a l w a s n e v e r Somalal's guru, but played a pivotal role in his life. These were the most crea ve years in Somalal Shah's life, as he received patronage from the ar s c royal family where he was exposed to ar sts from abroad. Slowly, Somalal Shah became a well known name in the world of arts a er he made illustra ons for Dharmakumarsinghji's book on "The Birds of Saurashtra." Much later, when he re red from Alfred High School, he le Bhavnagar

and came to Ahmedabad to work on the census with R.K. Trivedi. This was rather an unlikely form of work for an ar st like Somalal Shah, but it gave him the opportunity to travel extensively around Gujarat, which took him to heritage sites and rural India. The pastoral scene inspired him and he became well known for his radiant and colourful pain ngs of the Gujara countryside as he used wash technique and water colours with sensi vity, which had a certain transparent quality. Some of his well known pain ngs set in a rural se ng are - "Yaksha-Kanta, Sandhya-Deep, Panihari, Pujaran, Kumbhakar, Govalan, Mela-na-Manvi, SamoohSangeet, Meera and Sharad Poonam." Around this me, Somalal Shah undertook another voyage, this me to America, where he saw I m p re s s i o n i st p a i n n g s i n t h e museums and he returned charged with ideas and inspira on to start a new series of pain ngs. Somalal Shah exhibited extensively and in recogni on of his work, he received many awards, like the Ravishanker R ava l G a u rav P u ra s ka r b y t h e government of Gujarat and the pres gious Padma Shree from the government of India. Somalal Shah made his own space in the art world and became well known for his dis nct style of pain ng where he recreated the pastoral scene of Gujarat with warmth and beauty, as Tagore would have said..."you cast coloured shadows of thy radiance, such is thy maya"...
