CLASS OF 2018

Letter from President Scott

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY Clifford Scott, OD, MPH President

To the Class of 2018: Welcome to the profession of Optometry! You should be justifiably proud of your achievements, which mirror the ongoing changes in healthcare. As the body of scientific and clinical knowledge continues to expand at an exponential rate, your education has become more intense. You are the vanguard of a new generation of eye care practitioners who will be less focused on testing and measuring, and more reliant on objective technological data and information to make accurate diagnoses and to develop personalized treatment strategies for your patients. Your in-depth and broad-based clinical training has given you the the confidence and stamina to adapt to changes in health care throughout your career. The practice of optometry will become very different than the profession you now know. Be assured that you are prepared, not just to navigate the system, but to actually help shape the field of eye care in the future. As you grow into seasoned practitioners, do not take for granted the influence that you exert on your patients. Respect and courtesy are equally as important doctoring traits as are wisdom and skill. Most of all - listen to your patients. What they say will guide you to addressing not only their clinical problem, but also their concerns. And that will make you their doctor. You have my best wishes for a lifetime of personal and professional success. Sincerely,

Clifford Scott

The Optometric Oath With full deliberation I freely and solemnly pledge that: I AFFIRM that the health of my patient will be my first consideration. I WILL practice the art and science of optometry faithfully and conscientiously, and to the fullest scope o f my competence. I WILL uphold and honorably promote by example and action the highest standards, ethics and ideals of my chosen profession and the honor of the degree, Doctor of Optometry, which has been granted me. I WILL provide professional care for those who seek my services, with concern, with compassion and with due regard for their human rights and dignity. I WILL place the treatment of those who seek my care above personal gain and strive to see that none shall lack for proper care. I WILL hold as privileged and inviolable all information entrusted to me in confidence by my patients. I WILL advise my patients fully and honestly of all which may serve to restore, maintain or enhance their vision and general health. I WILL strive continuously to broaden my knowledge and skills so that my patients may benefit from all new and efficacious means to enhance the care of human vision. I WILL share information cordially and unselfishly with my fellow optometrists and other professionals for the benefit of patients and the advancement of human knowledge and welfare. I WILL do my utmost to serve my community, my country and humankind as a citizen as well as an optometrist. I HEREBY commit myself to be steadfast in the performance of this my solemn oath and obligation.
