NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY C lifford Scott, O D, MPH President
May 15,2016
To the Class o f 2016: As you join the ranks of NECO alumni, confident in your ability to succeed in the changing world of health care, take time to reflect how much you have changed in the few years that you have been here. Some o f it has been transactional - you now have a diploma that allows you to be licensed in the jurisdiction o f your choice. But, if all of us have done our best, you are also a more introspective and compassionate person than the day you received your acceptance letter. Being a doctor is very different than doctoring. Empathy and dedication can’t be taught in a classroom or in a pre-clinic; you only develop those values through good example and practice. They spring from the beliefs your family espoused, and have been strengthened by good teaching during your formative years. Most recently, they have become central to your clinical training, under the guidance o f some o f the best instructors in eye care. So... here’s to you - the next generation of eye care providers. Be thankful for the support and opportunity you’ve been afforded. Go forth and be the best doctor you can be. I wish you success and satisfaction in your professional career as well as health and happiness in your personal life. Congratulations!
