New England College of Optometry
Class of 2014
To the Class of 2014 “With great power comes great responsibility.” Ben Parker’s immortal last words to his nephew, Peter (actually, Voltaire sa id it first-but that’s splitting spider hairs), apply equally as well to your class as you enter the professional world. Your NECO diploma certifies to the world that you are qualified to provide primary eye care to the citizenry of your community. You have my sincere congratulations on earning that well-deserved recognition. Although you can rightfully boast of being at the forefront of optometric care in 2014, you need an unwavering commitment to updating your knowledge and skills as the health care world evolves at a breakneck pace. Those of you who are entering into residencies will have the advantage of a structured program to maintain cuttingedge competencies for the next year. But realistically, continuous learning must become part of your quotidian activity for the rest of your life. It can be seductive to rely on innovative technologies, integrated communication networks, and instantaneous access to information as the basis of your services. However, in both your academic and clinical experiences at NECO, we have stressed the importance of compassion and attention to your patients as individuals. Respect and courtesy are the hallmark of a responsible doctor. You have my best wishes for a lifetime of personal and professional success.
Sincerely, d iffta l^ S c G ilt
President, N ew England College of Optom etry
The O ptom etric Oath With full deliberation I freely and solemnly pledge that: I will practice the art and science of optometry faithfully and conscientiously, and to the fullest scope of my competence. I will uphold and honorably promote by example and action the highest standards, ethics and ideals of my chosen profession and the honor of the degree, Doctor of Optometry, which has been granted me. I will provide professional care for those who seek my services, with concern, with compassion and with the due regard for their human rights and dignity. I will place the treatment of those who seek my care above personal gam and strive to see that none shall lack for proper care. I will hold as privileged and inviolable all information entrusted to me in confidence by my patients. I will advise my patients fully and honestly of all which may serve to restore, maintain or enhance their vision and general health. I will strive continuously to broaden my knowledge and skills so that my patients may benefit from all new and efficacious means to enhance the care of human vision. I will share information cordially and unselfishly with my fellow optometrists and other professionals for the benefit of patients and the advancement of human knowledge and welfare. I will do my utmost to serve my community, my country and humankind as a citizen as well as an optometrist. I hereby commit myself to be steadfast in performance of this my solemn oath and obligation.
