HISTORY OF NEWENCO J i- ’ l

The New England College of Optom­ etry was established in 1894 as the Klein School of Optics by August A. Klein, a Boston ophthalmol­ ogist. The program of study was one year long and two s t ud e n t s were graduated at the end of the first year. In 1909 the course was expanded to two. years, offered as the last two years of .high school educa­ tion.

The Klein School of Optics became the Massa­ chusetts School of Optometry in 1919 and by 1930 required four years of high school prior to enrolling in the two year program. The curriculum at MSO expanded to three years in 1934 and to four years in 1939. The school was again ren­ amed in 1946 to the Massachusetts College of Optometry. The college occupied the Horace Mann Building located on the corner of Newbury and Exeter Streets. The facilities of the building were adequate for the total enrollment of the college at that time — less than 200 students.

During the 1950’s MCO was given the right to confer the Bachelor of Science degree in Optom­ etry and then the Doctor of Optometry degree.

The academic prerequisites also changed to two years of college coursework. MCO as well as the profession grew over the next two decades until 1971 when the college moved from Newbury Street to its present home on Beacon Street.

“Knowing that fourth year would be our last was a more exciting prospect than the fourth year itself. On our first day I arrived at Newbury Street only to find out that the school had been moved over the summer.

Why had the senior class not been noti­ fied? Were they saving money on stamps?

Maybe they figured that those seniors who found the new school would graduate and the rest of us would just be out of luck. ” - Reflections Yearbook 1971

The institution changed its name to the New England College of Optometry in 1976 to more accurately reflect the diverse backgrounds of the college’s student population. Approxi­ mately two-thirds of all students enrolled at NEWENCO are from the six New England states. Today NEWENCO is a four year professional program for students with at least three years of college and offers a two year program for persons holding Ph.D’s in the sciences.

NAMAIS HALL: named after a memorable professor of the college, Dr. Foster Namais, Its most striking feature is the spiral staircase in the central rotunda. This building was actually two residences which were built in 1904.

THE° LIBRARY: was constructed in 1894. It was the childhood home of Emily Sears who later became Mrs. Henry Cabot Lodge. Its hadn carved wooden paneling, marble fireplaces and hand painted gilt wall covering re­ flect the tastes of the wealthy Boston elite at that time.

THE DORMITORY: was acquired in 1983.

Dear Member of the Class of '85: Four years ago, at the inception of your studies at The New England College of Optometry, you began a quest, seeking knowledge, skill and competency in your chosen field of optometry. You have grown. You've learned to use the tools of diagnosis, gained an understanding of the complex­ ities of eyesight, and learned how to improve the quality of life, if only in a small way, for your patients.

You will now go forth in service to humankind, entrusted with the maintenance of the precious gift of sight.

Graduation was your rite of passage, signifying that you have been tested and found worthy. In so doing, you earned the right to use the initials "O.D." after your name, and whenever someone addresses you as Doctor from now on, you will remember that you received the preparation for your professional career while at NEWENCO. As you leaf through the pages of this volume in years to come and the memories come flooding back to you, remember that the roots of your professional growth lie within this institu­ tion. This is an intensive 2 year program geared toward the OD interested in a second career in the audio visual field.

Topics that will be studied include:

1. How to reverse slides while a class of 100 wait patiently.

2. How to change light bulbs when custodial help has gone home and Dr. W is no where to be found.

3. How to adjust trays and carousels without standing on a chair. Other topics and research projects will be accepted if submitted before the deadline indicated below.

I was born in Nigeria and received a B.S. in chemistry at Brooklyn College and am an advanced M.P.H. degree candidate at B.U. Medical School of Public Health to be conferred June, 1985. After graduation, I plan to promote optometry in Nigeria and help the poor. My hearty dedication to my mother, brother and sisters. “ If I should be reborn again, I will come to NEWENCO. 1have no regrets about my profession or my coming to NEWENCO.”

Tom started his undergraduate work at the University of Connecticut but interrupted his course of study there to enter NEWENCO, where he received his Bachelors as well as his O.D. A special thanks from Tom goes to his classmates who “ helped'break up the monotony.”

Jt is to my wife, Esterline, that I owe the utmost thanks. It was with pride in her patience and with quiet sobriety that she encouraged my quest for educational success. Those years — those educational years — seemed to grow longer, and as time went on they demanded greater sacrifices; but sacrifices never seemed to despair her, she just pushed on with dauntless devotion. I have the greatest admiration for the very ingenious nature of her survival strategies, it had often served as a source from which I drew strength to recreate a winning will.

Thank you, Esterline. Thanks to my son, Wayne, who in my absence pursued his course of study with ardent diligence, and did well. If thoughtful persistence is the hallmark by which dedication is judged, then one must complement the teachers of NEWENCO for their extended efforts. Each teacher is an attribute to education: an attribute to NEWENCO itself. Thanks to Drs. Chauncey, Clausen, Kamens and Kozol: these have contributed in a large measure to my success.

Mike attended the University of Maine at Orono where he received a B.S. in Microbiology and a minor in pinpongology. Mike went on to continue his studies at NEWENCO although he had to switch his major from pingpongology to optometry due to an unforeseen sports injury - "ping-pong elbow". Mike wishes to extend a special thanks to his father. Joseph, and his wife. Julie for their support.

I came from Saratoga Springs, New York and received my B.A. from Cornell University. My favorite part of NEWENCO was going out after finals, and I hated the stairs to classroom IV. I plan to stay in the Northeast (somewhere!) after graduation, and I would like to thank my family and friends for making these four years more enjoyable.

Domenic is a native of Massachusetts and did his undergraduate work at Tufts University. While at Tufts, bom received a B.S. in Biology and Psychology. While at NEWENCO Domenic liked most the friends made and training received. Liked least at NEWENCO were bookstore hours, classroom IV, and beige walls. Plans after graduation include “ a place of my own . . . soon” . Dom sends thanks to all those who made VOSH-Mexico a reality and dedicates this page to Frank Kozol; consoler, reprimander, buddy, and second uncle.

Cynthia is a graduate of Boston College. She originally hails from New York City and her future plans are “ to be a lifeguard on Shelter Island” . Cynthia liked the warm atmosphere of NEWENCO but dis­ liked classroom IV. Thanks to “ my husband, Peter; my parents; my friend and partner in crime, Debbie; and my wonderful friends.

Red, who hails from somewhere way up in the Berkshires, attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he received a B. A. in Psychology. Bob's future plans include a private practice in Hadley, MA. and rumor has it if you stop by on a Friday afternoon he will show you his woodpile and treat you to some of his home made brew. Watch for him on the snowmobile trails. Bob would like to dedicate this page to all of those people who kept him going especially Mom, Dad, Gram, and Judy. He would like to give a special thanks to Raj for giving a smile and a pat on the back when it was needed the most.

Thanks to my parents for their dedicated support, Mr. Dufour and Dr. Svagdys for teaching me the hidden side of Optometry. John aka Jay to his friends, is a native of Windsor, Conn. Jay did his undergraduate work at Farleigh Dickenson University where he received a B.S. in Biology. Plans after graduation include getting a ‘‘real'’ job. Jay dedicates this page to his parents, Frank and RoseMarie Dzurenda and especially wants to thank his high school guidance counselor for suggesting that he NOT attend college.

Finally . . . a light at the end of the tunnel. We have all worked hard and deserve only the best. May that light guide us to enhance our profession , . . we are the future.

“ Rocky Glaukomflecken Elliott” attended Bridgewater State College as a biology major prior to coming to NEWENCO. While at NEWENCO Rocky had the unfortunate distinction of having the Ibngest commute to school. He spent so much time in his car, “ The Grapling Gremlin” that he used the Southeast Expressway as his: mailing address. After graduation. Rocky plans to open the Elliott Eye Care Clinics, USA and Canada, “ We get by with a little help from our friends.” Rocky would like to thank Mom, Dad, Charlene and his family. In addition to his studies at NEWENCO, Tom graduated from the U.S. Army ROTC program at Boston University as Second Lieutenant and is presently serving in the U.S. Army Reserve. Jim received his B.S. degree in Physics from Davidson College in North Carolina. He is a native of Shrewsbury, MA. CRAIG EVANS, O.D.

Craig received his B.S. from SUNY at Oneonta before coming to NEWENCO. One of Craig’s favorite hobbies is designing eyewear which he proudly displayed at posh social events. In addition (or in place of) his studies, Craig enjoyed ping pong matches, altering documents in the business office, or displaying his lack of talent with the infamous Nick and his Knickers. Craig was also a founding father of the NEWENCO PGA. He plans to return to his native New York and practice in Rochester. Jackie, a native of Haverhill, Massachusetts, attended the University of Lowell for her undergraduate studies, but she saw the light early and started at NEWENCO after three years of college. She remem­ bers that as an ODI, fourth year seemed so far away, but now that graduation is finally here, she plans to head for Arizona to set up a practice. Jackie is very grateful for her parents’ support and dedicates this page to her husband Michael.

Carl graduated from Gettysburg College earning a B.A., in Psycholo­ gy and Biology. He chose to return to Boston and sunny New England to attend NEWENCO. Some happy times include playing football on the Common, golfing, and Nick and the Knickers. Except for inflated tuition, golfing Irishmen and his nickname, Carl enjoyed his four years in Boston. I came to NEWENCO from Colby College where I graduated with a degree in math and philosophy. While at NEWENCO. I enjoyed working as research assistant to Dr. Comerford. I plan to spend my first year as an O.D. as academic fellow, here, at NEWENCO. Who knows where that will lead! Bob (you have to watch out for the quiet ones) Norris graduated from Albany State University before coming to NEWENCO. Bob plans on taking a slow boat back to Lond Island after graduation. Among Bob’s many achievements-one stands out-he managed to remain '‘relatively sane" even though he was exposed to a daily dose of "Moons” humor. Fred, from Rochester, N.Y. has a B.S. and an M.S. from University of Rochester. Fred eventually wants to enter private practice. Richard R. Socash, a veritable hillbilly from the backwoods of Binghamton, New York, went to Hamilton College in Clinton, New York and got himself a B.A. degree in Psychobiology in 1981. His most absurd idea was to become an optometrist since he was 12 years old.

So just for laughs, he went to NEWENCO, and what did he like best about it? Well in regard to the profession of optom etry "A in’t love grand when you finally hit it.” What did he like best about Boston? "A special thanks to those Boston girls with 72 inch legs and nice white teeth. What will he do with his life in the future? "Grow corn, wheat and private contact lens practice.” What single event affected u J , w Pete Moresi shaved his head, beveled it and mounted it in a frame." What could Rick’s mottos possibly be?

Why behave in public when you are living on a playground." "Everything is a stimulus to recovery." and "Whatever you do. don’ t qet pregnant or married. What are the only things you know about Rick for sure? He is an optometrist and he is still twelve years old.

Having earned my B.A. in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, I was not exactly an old timer in the health sciences field when I came to NEWENCO. At times, the curriculum here seemed like an endless uphill battle. I owe endless thanks to many members of the faculty who gave me help and encouragement through my four years here, but especially during first year. ALso, my thanks go to Peggie and Auggie for their advice, support, and immeasureable help. Through all the exams, Boards, day-to-day survival, and (who could forget) a nearly suicidal second year, their friendship helped make NEWENCO survivable for me. My greatest sacrifice over the past two years was not the studying or tough winters or driving in Boston traffic, but was giving up my annual golf vacation with “ the boys." Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) is an organization which gives its time and talent to deliver visual care to needy people throughout the world. Most of the emphasis has been on third world countries, where the need is greatest.

A typical VOSH mission will include ten to twenty people who are optometrists, optometry students and opticians.

Each optometrist will examine 75 to 100 patients on a typical day. The hours are long and the pace hectic.

In March of 1984, five New England College of Optometry students and one faculty member participated in a vision clinic in Patzcuaro, Mexico. It was the first VOSH mission for the New England College of Optometry. In total, there were 23 volunteers who cared for the visual needs of 4,500 people over a five day period. A total of 3,500 glasses were dispensed, along with sunglasses and eyeglass cases.

We expect to hold our next mission in February, 1985 to Merida in the Yucatan area of Mexico. VOSH has grown to a total of 30 students under the direction of Domenic D’Angelo, Brenda Fogarty and Dr. Gary Moss.

Dr. Smith, Dr. Dupuis, members of the board, guests of honor, Dr. Kamens, Dr. Kozol, members of the faculty, parents, classmates, relatives and friends.

For most of us, this will be the last graduation in which we participate. Previously each graduation ceremony marked the transition from one academic level to a higher one. Today’s graduation marks the transition from academic life to profes­ sional life. From this point on we will be applying the knowledge and experience for which these years have been preparing us.

We now have the opportunity to rekindle interests that we’ve had to put aside due to the pressures of studying and clinical assignments.

Not only have we put life on hold for ourselves but we’ve also affected our families, our spouses, our children and friends in the same way.

We owe thanks to all who have helped us achieve this degree.

First, the New England College of Optometry and it’s administration for providing direction and the opportunity for us to receive one of the finest clinical educations in the country, with rotations such as Walter Reed Army Hospital, Joslin Diabetic Center, Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, Omni Eye Clinic in Atlanta, several VA medical centers and many others. The College also provided an excellent library service.

Next we must thank the faculty, who not only teach but in many cases serve as role models. Some are in academics, some are in research, others are clinical instructors. Some combine outside practice with teaching. We can look at their success and satisfaction to help us determine the emphasis of our own careers.

We are truly grateful to our families for supporting us with time, understanding and financial resources. Parents, be proud that your daughter or son is now a doctor and a primary provider of eye care.

I would like to give my own personal thanks to my husband George, to my parents Joseph and Evelyn Landry, my brother Joe, and my friend Noelbis, who all played a large part in helping me through school.

I would like to thank Dr. Cliff Scott and Dr. Bob Parks for supporting me in my speech writing efforts.

I want to acknowledge and congratulate my classmate and friend Lisa Kralian who deserves to be delivering this address as much as I do.

We would also like to thank the president of the college, Dr. Dow Smith for his many years of dedicated service to the school. He will be retiring this year. We wish him well.

To the incoming president, Dr. Sylvio Dupuis, we welcome you. Vour experience as a practitioner, AOA trustee, hospital president, and commissioner of health will be an asset to the college.

At this transition in the college’s leadership, I’d like to take the opportunity to propose several views for consideration.

First, as we know, the physical facilities of the college- the administrative offices, classrooms and the Boston Eye Clinic are inadequate and plans have been made to consolidate them. To a large extent, the physical structure of a clinic determines the patient population. The current Boston Eye Clinic and the Rehabilitation Clinic are relatively inacessible to the handicapped. To assure that students receive exposure to a wide variety of patients and problems, the clinics should have barrier-free designs and policies which make them attractive to the elderly and handicapped.

Second, many of the faculty are among the most capable in the profession.

However, the clinical experience that an individual student receives varies widely depending on the experience and skill of the instructor. All clinical faculty should be required to be competent in the advanced level techniques that are available in that facility. All specialty clinics should provide update courses on a regular basis for their faculty.

Third, the clinical use of diagnostic pharmaceuticals does not occur on a regular basis until the fourth year and even then it is dependent upon the policy of the individual clinic.

Arrangements need to be made to allow a full range of diagnostic procedures to be implemented as needed during the initial patient visit in all college affiliated clinics.

The New England College of Optometry provides education for students who will be practicing in all states. The vast majority of states have laws which provide for the use of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents. The others are likely to havelaws passed in the near future. In addition, a number of students from this year’sclass as well as from other graduating classes will be practicing in states where optometrists treat eye disease. The college owes these students the training and experience necessary to be licenses and practice competently in these states.

Finally, I’d like to say a few closing words to my classmates.

We should be proud and confident in our abilities. During the last four years we have obtained an in-depth knowledge of the eye and vision. Optometrists have more expertise to offer in vision care than any other group of professionals. To put optometry in the forefront of health care, we must strive to develop competency in new techniques and the use of new technology as it becomes available.

We must work for legislation which allows us to provide a full range of eye care services to our patients.

Optometry is practiced in a variety of setting: private or group practices, HMO’s, community health centers, hospitals, corporate locations, teaching facilities, and the military. In whatever mode of practice we select, we must make sure that the quality of patient care is our primary concern.

The path that we now choose will determine how all of us look at optometry in the future.
